'Lost': It's Always Sunny in Templedelphia

Last night’s Lost provided us with one more reason it’s difficult to take the Other (Temple) Others seriously: A guest spot from Rob McElhenney, one of the creators and stars of FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia! At first, I didn’t want to trust my suspicion that it was really him. The islandwear substitution of an Other-y leather vest for Mac’s traditional sleeveless muscle shirt compounded my confusion. And I couldn’t tell if “Aldo” was wearing a Dick Towel (NSFW) underneath his cranberry cargo pants. But then the character started throwing a hissy fit and telling people to shut up, and I knew it was Rob. This was his second appearance — Kate had assaulted Aldo with a rifle when he was a security guard for the Others three years ago. Were you able to take Rob seriously as a Temple Other last night? SPOILER after the jump.

(Sidebar: Our photo editor labeled the image used for this item “What Kate Does: Rob McElhenney” and now I’m wishing those two had snuck in a jungle quickie.)

If you’ve come this far, you’ve seen the episode, so I feel it’s safe to mention “Aldo” was shot and killed……by bewildered Claire! That was great! Are any other Sunny fans with me in wanting to see each of the Paddy’s gang come on for one episode of Lost just to be unceremoniously murdered? Sweet Dee has already proven her wenching skills should there ever be another flash backward. It could be fun to send Danny DeVito down various chutes and ladders just to see what’s inside. I’d almost like to see Charlie die in each episode, like Kenny on South Park. The possibilities are as endless as the list of things a cat could do in his free time once he has been kept warm by Kitten Mittons.

i want frank to show up at the end of the series and be the key to this whole show. I’d be ok if it were charlie too.

    • Eric

the whole show is actually written by charlie in his diary. he writes it after hugging glue and eating cat food.

      • Me baby, ME

I hear that glue is much more effective if sniffed or inhaled as opposed to just hugging the glue bottle. To each his own, I guess…

  • Kat

Is your smoke monster making tooooo muuuuuuch nooooooise?

    • liz

      HA! This made my day,

    • Ted

damnit you beat me to it i was typing before i refreshed the page so i didn’t even see yours! scroll down for my version

    • Sailor

      That is hilarious!

    • Sarah

Hilarious! Kitten Mittens is my favorite thing ever put on film.

  • liz

I have a hard time taking anyone from It’s Always Sunny seriously in anything. I didn’t realize this was him but spent a good chunk of the ep trying to figure out who he was. I didn’t realize it was him!

  • mark m

I am hoping LOST ends with Charlie waking up from the mother of all hangover sleeps…and LOST was all his dream.

    • Sarah

That would be a terrible ending.

    • Quirky

I guess that’s what you get for huffing glue.

    • tanzio

Maybe not the end of LOST, but that would be an awesome Sunny episode.

  • Christian

Rob was the best thing about last night’s truly boring ep. At least we got the Kate one out of the way.

  • Ted

Does your other make TOOO MUUUCH NOOOOISE!?!? try Other smothers! otherwise known as a bullet in the chest LMFAO

  • Joe

It was so hard to focus on the story with him there. The funny thing is, the scenes he were in revealed a little bit of plot information but, it was so difficult to take him seriously.

  • crispy

I have never seen an episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, so that didn’t bother me. It was the writing and his over-the-top performance. He was even more annoying than Kate! And that can’t be easy to pull off.

    • BP

Seriously. He was a total jerk and i hated his character. Glad he was aufed.

    • allie

I’ve never even heard of the show but whoever this guy is, he was totally annoying & I couldn’t stand him.

      • Ceballos

I LOVE “Lost” to pieces, but I’ve never claimed that it’s a perfect show.

One of the things that annoy me are the one-dimensionally A-holey bad guys who go out of their way to be irritating and annoying as hell just to give the audience a cheap little thrill when they’re killed. Off the top of my head I can think of Frogurt, Phil the Dharma guy who hit Juliet and, of course, now Aldo.

It’s a shame, because this show can obviously give its bad guys layers when it wants to (hello, Ben Linus!) I realize that the show simply doesn’t have time to develop every single character, but the inclusion of annoying characters like Aldo (who are only irritating just so that we’ll be happy when they get killed) have always totally rubbed me the wrong way. You’re better than that, “Lost”!

      • To Ceballos

Don’t forget the annoying bearded bully with glasses Kawowski who was in charge of the Swan site. I hated that guy with a passion.

      • Ceballos

Oh yeah – Radzinski was thoroughly hateable!

The only reason I didn’t mention him is because we’re never going to get that “applause” moment when he dies – we know (thanks to Kelvin Inman) that Radzinski blew his own brains out in the Swan station. (At least according to Inman.)

      • crispy

Ceballos, it’s essentially become a trend. A-holey bad guys are the red shirts of Lost. I’m assuming Lennon will be meeting his end shortly.

      • Ceballos

        crispy-

You’re definitely right about it trending recently. I just realized all the A-holes I mentioned (and Radzinski) are from season 5 and later.

    • Quirky

Crispy, you need to check out Sunny. With the sense of humor you usually express on these comments boards, you’d probably love the show.

      • crispy

I’ll give it a shot. Isn’t it on like TBS or one of those cable networks?

      • Chris

        FX

      • PMD

I was thinking the same thing! And you can also catch episodes on hulu.com. You don’t necessarily need to watch it chronologically because the most important thing you need to know is that they are all A-HOLES!

    • Zach

Sunny in Philadelphia has it’s moments.. Danny Devito is the best part of the show IMO The guy on LOST lastnight and the other guy on the show get beyond annoying with the tone of their voices most of the time… almost to the point I stop watchin to show..

      • MH

Ooh Zach I totally agree, they’re yelling and screaming at each other and anyone constantly is really becoming grating. I liked IASIP at first but now I can hardly sit through an ep.

  • EternalClementine

Loved it! He totally was Mac on the island though, so hard to buy him as anyone else. So glad he died cause he was very annoying, I would LOVE to see each actor show up just to be killed somehow!!

    • PJ

I was hoping to see his karate moves and cat-like reflexes. And maybe see him assess a few situations.

  • David

This was a very stupid review. If you want to talk about Rob McElhenney, review an episode of IASIP, not LOST… This show isn’t about him.

    • Annie Barrett

Hi, David! This isn’t EW’s review of the episode. Doc Jensen will post his 8 million-word recap any minute now at our Lost hub, so keep an eye out.
You can also check out Jensen’s snap judgment of last night’s episode on PopWatch, here, or read his walkup item for the episode, here. Have fun!

      • elena

Yay! Go Annie Barrett for being awesome and not punching anonymous commenter David for his misplaced outrage. The internet is a bitchy place sometimes, but that was classy, Annie!

      • wildecat

Here’s what Annie REALLY wanted to say: “Hi, David! (A$$hole) This isn’t EW’s review of the episode. (You freaking idiot) Doc Jensen will post his 8 million-word recap any minute now at our Lost hub, so keep an eye out. (I love Doc, but whoo-boy, he gets a little wacky, ya know?) You can also check out Jensen’s snap judgment of last night’s episode on PopWatch, here, or read his walkup item for the episode, here. (Here’s a road map for, you freaking idiot) Have fun! (Go away and never darken my doorstop again, YOU FREAKING IDIOT!!) The End.

  • BP

You dont headbutt anyone with a rifle. You headbutt with your HEAD.

    • Duane

      Thanks for clearing that up.

  • Brigette

I’m so glad that you wrote this article. When I saw this episode I was like, “Hey! It’s Rob!” And I immediately found myself giggling. Was I supposed to be taking him seriously? Didn’t he play a whiney, annoying Other? I, for one, enjoyed his cameo. And I agree, the entire cast needs to get in here. Charlie is the real Man in Black and he and the gang built that creepy statue, I know it!

  • RK

In the alternate universe, Aldo goes on to create kitten mittens.

  • Rob Grizzly

Never watched “It’s Always Sunny”, but I thought he sucked big time on LOST. Glad he’s dead.

  • Josh

The first time he showed up in season three, he was just kind of an idiot so it didn’t seem weird.

I love Lost, and I love Sunny, and I saw on IMDB a month or two ago that Aldo would be making a return. I was really looking forward to it, but now I’m just disappointed. He didn’t even seem like an Other – he couldn’t track!

    • Kyle

This actor is a natural at playing annoying idiots. Maybe just a guy that’s playing himself who can remember lines quite effortless.

    • crispy

LOL at “he couldn’t track!” Remember back in Season Two when the Others were these mysterious, hard-core badasses who walked barefoot thru the jungle and abducted children. Now they’re annoying a-holes who can’t even outsmart Kate!

      • teresa

        They’ve lost their mojo.
