Snap Judgment: Tonight's Episode of 'Lost'! (Needless to say... SPOILER ALERT!)

Filed under: Lost, Television and tagged: , ,

SPOILER ALERT! THIS POST CONTAINS MUCHO INFO ABOUT TONIGHT’S LOST. IF YOU HAVEN’T YET WATCHED — AND WEST COASTERS, I’M TALKING TO YOU — YOU REALLY SHOULDN’T READ THIS. YET. JUST WAIT AND WATCH THE EPISODE FIRST. THEN COME BACK. DON’T WORRY. WE’LL BE HERE. Lost has a habit of following up its premiere extravaganzas with scaled-down follow-ups that seek to ground the audience and orient them to a more deliberate pace for the season. “What Kate Does” conformed to the second episode mold, and I’m going to hazard a guess and say that not everyone here appreciated that choice, especially those who came to the final season expecting Lost to be all We’ve Got A Lot To Do And Not Much Time To Do It So Let’s Just Rip Into This! Nope. Still, I give the episode an admiring B, and if you ask me again in a few hours, I might add a + to it, because the more I think through this deeper-than-it-appears affair, the more I’m stimulated by it. Granted, it’s my job to think about Lost, like, a lot, but put the episode’s good stuff on a scale and I’ll wager it’ll outweigh the lame stuff.

Josh Holloway’s wrenching acting as he revealed the heartbreaking disclosure that he intended to propose to Juliet. The intrigue of “infected” and “claimed” Sayid. The hilarious irony of Dr. Ethan Goodspeed. Crazy-scary mother-gone-wild Claire. The notable camaraderie of the Temple castaways, determined to survive their latest ordeal with “live together, die alone” idealism and great, knowing humor. And don’t look now, kids, but is Jack Shephard actually getting likable again? I loved his sincere concern for Kate and Sayid, his willingness to accept Sawyer’s seething heartbreak, and his humbled self-awareness. I loved his smiles, his knowing laughter, his warmth. “You take care of Sawyer, I’ll take care of Sayid,” Jack told Kate, the castaway dad huddling with the castaway mom on how to handle their troubled castaway kids. When he told Dogen, “I don’t even trust myself,” Jack may have uttered the most heroic statement of his wannabe hero life, because it was so painfully honest. Superman of Science? No. Superman of Faith? No. Just Jack. And in the end, one wonders if that’s exactly what he needs to be to save the day for himself and his friends.

But I’m not as blind as Lady Justice; I saw and was bugged by the weak stuff, too. I felt the absence of Richard, Ben and The Locke-ness Monster. I’m not yet bowled over by the new crop of Others; Temple Master Dogen and his hippy sidekick Lennon are growing on me, but Aldo and Justin were a dopey combo that undermined the ominous mystique of the entire Others crew. Also, I’m already counting the minutes until the castaways escape yet again from Others’ captivity. Unless the Temple gets super-interesting next week, my guess is that we’ll be starting with the season 3/Hydra Station comparisons next week. And there were some plot contrivances that bugged me. I don’t care if it was destiny or some hazy past-life recognition of Sideways Kate as a trustworthy woman, but it was pretty hard to believe that Sideways Claire would get into that cab after Kate had carjacked her at gunpoint hours earlier….

Like I said, though, the more I pushed into the dark subtext of this deceptively nifty “Death Cab For Cuties” episode, the more I liked it, and better, the more I became convinced that it contained some extremely valuable ideas for making sense of the season’s risky flash-sideways storytelling device. The recap I’m currently writing captures that process of discovery. Until then, post here, or sleep, or watch the new episode of “Totally Lost,” super-sized with the presence of Matthew Fox, Terry O’Quinn, and Michael Emerson!

    Sawyer is so hot.

    • Celia

Agreed! I just wanted to give a nice, big…naked hug. I felt so bad for him.

      • Stephanie Tanner

HOT DAWG! I like Sawyer too, but I cannot stand Kate. She and Jack are the most boring characters on the show. Everytime they are on screen it feels like a bad soap opera or worse, that Gray’s Anatomy crap. Overall this episode was too dragged out, but next week looks to be interesting.

      • Celia

Kate annoyed me in this episode too. She needs to make up her mind, does she want to be with Sawyer or with Jack. And I also agree that Kate and Jack tend to be a little over dramatic. I loved the appearance of CLAIRE though!! AWESOME!!

      • Emily

Sawyer was so heartwrenching in his grief over Juliet and I actually felt bad for Kate when she cried about losing Sawyer. Who knows maybe she hasn’t lost him completely.

      • gigi

Agree! Josh Holloway is smoking! I’m so glad Sawyer totally dissed Kate to grieve for Juliet. Did Kate really think Sawyer would come running back to her. Pa-shaw!!

      • D

I hate Kate! I was soooooo glad to see that she finally realized it is not all about her!

      • maskedavenger

Give me Jack anyday of the week….

    • Zak

Anyone catch PICKETT guarding the entrance that JACK asked to go through?

      • LV

I didn’t notice that. Isn’t Pickett dead, by Juliet’s gun?

      • Shawn

Dude, I notice that too. Sent my head reeling wondering why Pickett was back in it.

      • Ryan

Yes I saw that and said THAT WAS PICKETT! But my wife didn’t believe me!

      • BPersinger

I don’t know what you guys were watching, but that guy was too thin in body and face to be Pickett. Also Pickett was a bit shorter.

      • Taco

ya im pretty sure it was pickett

      • Steve

It’s not Pickett, but it is an other from the previous seasons.

      • Jennifer

I’m drawing a blank, who was Pickett?

      • LostGrrl

That wasn’t Pickett. According to Lostpedia, anyway, which says he’s dead.

    • Mimi

Shirtless Sawyer is much hotter … where has he been lately :)

    • junierizzle

Sawyer looks kinda chubby this season.

      • Lindsay

I noticed that he looked a little chunky too. Though he is still hot. He did some great acting this ep. I’m still sad over Juliet. I really hope they end up together in the flash sideways.
BTW-When Kate said, would you believe me if I said I was innocent to Claire, did anyone else think that maybe she didn’t kill her dad in the flash sideways universe?

      • hutchy

My wife mentioned the same thing. Why do you think he has his shirt on this season? Did you see in the dock scene when he was in profile, you can see his squishy double chin? And visible gut?

      • Your mom

tough crowd – I’m sure you guys are all in peak physical condition

      • Sue

Josh stated that he put on sympathy pounds when his wife was pregnant, and has lost 22 in recent months. He must have still been working on it when this episode filmed. Frankly, I don’t care. Chubby or not, I’ll take him any time, any place.

    • dustin

He is a f-cking bummer this season so far. Kate is amazingly hot. And YAY Mac for being back. “The Gang Solves The Smoke Monster Problem”

      • pj

i yelled “MAC” then wished charlie and dennis would show up.

      • Bob

I found it funny that he basically WAS Mac, only on the Island; I was waiting for him to call Kate the “useless chick.” And I also kind of wished that Charlie and Dennis showed up. Kind of.

      • KO

Maybe it’s me, but Holloway’s acting seems even more forced when the maudalin music in the backgroung is basically screaming, “this is a sad scene…you need to feel sad now!”

      • Ralph

I wondered if Mac is in Philadelphia in the sideways reality.

      • Meier

And I think that was Danny DeVito playing Sonogram Aaron!

    • harry

      Hell yeah!!!!

    • GinaNY

Nope not since Season 4. Kate had him when he was hot.

    • Rush

The added questions of the Temple Others and Sayid’s “infection” and the Claire-Roussuea are getting tiresome. Time for LOST to go Monty Python and “Get On With It!”

      • Joe

Agreed. This was the first episode in a loooong time where I was seriously getting bored and asking myself, “where is this all going?” I trust the writers but, this episode was boring, nothing happened. It felt like a filler episode and now there are only 13 episodes left.

  • Terry

Was that Arzt that the cab almost ran into?

    • Charlie

      It certainly was!

    • Shelley with an E

Yes! Not sure if it matters, or if it’s just a reward sighting for loyal fans, though.

      • ericalina

Artz was in the premiere too talking to Hurley on the plane about his chicken commercials.

      • Meier

He also picked up his luggage next to Sayid in “LA X: Part 2,” hence he’s been in every S6 episode so far!

    • crispy

Artz doing his best Ratso Rizzo. “I’m walking here! I’m walking here!”

      • LOL

Laughed long and hard at the Ratso nod!

      • Anon Emous

        Dittom LOL

  • Shelley with an E

I liked the Claire as the new Rousseau idea. Sickness, stolen baby, crazy traps, crazy hair.

    • leo

yes exactly, right down to the hair!

    • Zoey

That’s who she reminded me of! Wow, complete brain fart there.

    • Celia

I know right!! Time Claire appeared that was my immediate thought! She’s the blonde Rousseau! I love it! I’m so glad she’s alive.

    • dave

Nice Shelley, didn’t catch that, but all the booby traps, crazy hair and rifle should have tipped me off.

      • gigi

Me either! Very good catch! Lost baby and all! Love it!!

    • Elizabeth

Did anybody notice Claire’s sonogram? The date was October 22, 2004. NOT September 22, 2004. Any idea what that means?

      • Booyah

Didn’t notice it, but that could be the due date, since she’s 36 weeks pregnant now.

  • GOB

Lost at its worst is still better than almost anything on tv. I liked tonight’s episode a lot, but why does it seem like there are as many minutes of commercials as programming?

    • blackman

I agree. The constant commercials was annoying.

      • Rich

Why are you still watching LOST with commercials? Record on DVR and start watching 20 minutes late-no commercials

      • @Rich

Not everyone has a DVR. Some of us have to watch the show in real time. (Although I have been known to tape it & zip through the commercials.)

      • Stef

You need a DVR my friend, you will thank us when you get one! Rich is right. Watch half of Hollywood week on American Idol, then switch over to Lost and fast forward through commercials. Definitely the way to go.

      • Alan

I agree with Rich. That’s exactly what I do. I record it and plop down on the couch after 20 minutes. Works like a charm. :)

      • hutchy

PEople still watch Lost without a DVR? Wow I had no idea anyone still did that. How can you stand it?

      • Bob

Actually, Lost is one show that I prefer to watch “live” even though I have a DVR. The commercials get muted and my wife and I have three minutes to talk about what the eff just happened.

      • Your mom

Wow hutchy, you can still breath under the weight of your smug condescension? It must be suffocating – how can you stand it?

      • Luddite

Can’t afford a DVR. And I don’t really mind watching it with commercials – it gives me time to proclaim the greatness of Lost without talking over the show.

      • Taco

        im with ya luddite!

      • really… how?

how can i stand it? um. maybe bc some of us don’t have a crapload of money to spend on things like DVRs. you know, economic recession, unemployment etc… frankly i resent that people (television programmers incl) assume that we all have DVRs. Hell, believe it or not, some people can’t even afford cable. So you people with all your evidently disposable income or credit card debt should get off your condescending high horse and cut the rest of us a break. That being said, this season (for the first time!) is OnDemand in my area and before i used to watch it on hulu.

      • Philip K. Dickensian

Fer cryin’ out loud, I don’t even have cable, much less DVR.

      • Annie

I totally live paycheck to paycheck (in Manhattan, nonetheless) and don’t even remotely have the money for expensive gadgets. DVR, however, is $9 a month. NINE DOLLARS. Worth every penny and then some. I agree – how can you possibly be living without it in 2010?

      • really… how?

i got evicted from manhattan. no. i can’t afford the initial investment in a machine or 9 extra dollars a month. or perhaps i could, but if i have extra money i would rather spend it on doing something with friends and not on something to make me even more sedentary and homebound than i already am.

      • Anitamargarita

Annie – do you mean $9 IN ADDITION TO DIGITAL CABLE? I’m not yelling, just emphasizing. I decided one day that I was paying way too much a month to just essentially “tape” shows that are FREE. 80 percent of the shows I was recording were from broadcast channels. I can afford cable, but I cut it off anyway. I am just not willing to spend that kind of money anymore.

      • LAJACKIE

I’m with Bob. We have a dvr but Lost is the one show we watch ‘live’. We talk about what happened in the commercial break and EVERYBODY immediately stops talking as soon as it comes back on!

      • LostFan

You rather not spend money on something that makes you more sedentary. If anything a DVR makes you less sedentary, you can watch the entire show in less than an hour!! LOL

      • watched17times

I can’t believe people are on here arguing about finances. Different people have different priorities. The priority of this site is to talk about LOST, not income levels. LOST is free!

  • Nicole

The most intriguing revelation in this episode was the “CLAIMING” of Sayid. What does being “claimed” mean and is a bad thing? Or just bad thing for The Others? Does being claimed bring you to the side of MIB? Or we all just assuming that Jacob is the good guy and therefore we automatically relate the dark elements to evil?

    • leo

I actually started to wonder if there could be more than one smoke monster…if anyone ‘claimed’ (including Claire) could also be a smoke monster, which might explain why sometimes it was ruthless and killed while other times it seemed to watch and listen and shifted away without harming anyone.

      • mags

Good point. I thought that in the premiere when Sayid came back to life before the “kitty litter” was spread around the temple.

      • Nicole

Yeah! I started to think about that, but then I wondered if they would really attempt to make the characters that we see as truly human into these so called “vicious” smoke monsters. Interesting to think about.

      • CC

        and in addition…they’re dead, right?

      • LOL

WWE Wrestlemania 25: Good Smokey vs. Evil Smokey.

      • gigi

I have no DVR…still ask for change for the pay phone and play cassette tapes on my sony walkman(with AM/FM radio) thankyouverymuch!!

      • MikeG

Yeah, I wondered about the theory posted that it was MIB trapped inside the cabin because it made me wonder about smoke monster appearances during any of the cabin episodes. Maybe not true because we do see Christian and Claire in the cabin, and Christian states that he speaks on Jacob’s behalf. Which also makes it interesting that Christian was with Claire after she ran off now that we know she was “Claimed”. Thoughts?

      • Carrie

I was also thinking that maybe the “claimed” people are all able to shift to smoke monsters.

      • DR

My husband and I were talking after and if Claire was also “claimed” (I’m assuming that means MIB took over her body as we are thinking might be the case with Sayid), then she would have had to die, and I couldn’t remember that happening. My husband reminded me that there was some speculation she died in the Dharmaville explosion … when they were all under attack and Sawyer carried her into the house they were all holed up in. Maybe she really was killed and MIB took over her form and Christian’s. Remember they were sitting in the cabin together looking very comfortable.

    • mags

It can’t be Jacob claiming Sayid like suggested in the post… b/c temple people are on Jacob’s side. Why would they want to purge that?

      • leo

No I don’t think its Jacob, its the man in black.

    • BA

2 thoughts/questions: 1). Why wasn’t young Ben “claimed” when Sayid shot him? 2). Maybe Dogen thinks Sayid is claimed because they don’t know that MIB has ALREADY claimed Locke. Maybe when they realize this, they will not be worried about Sayid. AND what about Jacob not wanting Sayid to die in the first place? Sorry that is 3.

      • Luann

I think that has to do with the water not being clear. Perhaps clear water was something Jacob controlled. But this new tainted water is controlled by the MIB.

      • Kevin

Ben wasn’t “claimed” because Ben didn’t die. He was heeled by the clear water. Sayid couldn’t be healed by the water and died. He was claimed when he died. Like Claire was claimed after she died in that explosion.

      • Anna

I totally missed that. Claire died in an explosion? Are we sure Ben wasn’t claimed? He did go from being a fairly sweet kid to being evil as a result of being healed.

      • Stevie

Ben WAS claimed! He became the MIB’s minion after his experience at the temple. I don’t think that Smokey LITERALLY inhabits the bodies of Ben, Claire, and Sayid. He “claims” them as his minions. Similarly, Jacob has his people lined up– Jack, Hurley, Kate, Sawyer, Jin, Sun, etc. Jacob and the MIB are lining up their chess pieces.

      • Jude10

I agree with Stevie. Ben, Claire and Sayid are his followers now. Why else would Claire be hanging out with Christian (who IMHO is the Smoke Monster/MIB) taking the appearance of dead people (i.e. Eko’s brother Yemi, Ben’s “daughter” Alex, etc.)

      • watched17times

To stevie. below..hmmm Chess Pieces? Backgammon pieces? Black and white? hmmmm? Good theory!

      • watched17times

Do you think that Sawyer will go to the dark side? Do you think maybe he might try to kill himself? What’s up with that ladder in the preview he seems to be falling off of?

      • Jessica

Plus, when they were all off the island, Sayid worked for Ben, doing all of his dirty work…maybe now since he’s been claimed he’ll go back to following Ben’s wishes?

      • JT

B/c the water was probably different when Ben was taken by Richard. The (“Me, you and Everyone Else We Know”) guy said earlier ‘how come the water isn’t clear’…or some such thing. Maybe because Jacob is dead? And his healing powers are no longer in play?

And was the water the souce of the AMAZING physical recovery everyone on the island has been having since they got there? Maybe not the ENTIRE reason (i.e. Locke hadn’t had a chance to drink the island’s water- but could walk asap), but when ever there was a fight (of which there were lots!!!), Sawyer getting shot in the shoulder area, et cetera, these guys healed up very, very quick.

        Thoughts anyone?

      • Jughead

We don’t know if Ben was “claimed” or not. We don’t know what “claimed” means. MIB impersonates dead people. That’s as much as we know. As far as reanimation or resurrection, it may not be MIB at all. An important point about Christian: He is alive on the island, yet there is no dead body. His body is MISSING (see “LA X” and Season One). So, he is NOT impersonated by Smokey, as Locke is.

      • chris

I think it’s boiling down to foils and duality. Harking back to season one, yremember Locke’s teaching of backgammon to Walt. The side of the light, and the side of the dark? I think the characters are being foiled up right down the middle. Kate and Sawyer are foils. Ben and Sayid. Hurly and Miles. Jack and John. Claire and Rousseau. I don’t Ben was claimed. Not by MIB. I believe he is on the side of the light, just misdirected all this while by MIB. And I wouldn’t be surprised if Widmore is also on the side of light, and Eloise on the side of dark. Maybe not. Who the eff knows?

      • BA

Love all the replies! We don’t know if Ben died in the temple and then came back to life, like Sayid, or if he was just automatically healed. I also think that makes sense about the bodies. Though, we never saw Claire’s dead body either. When the place exploded, Sawyer got her, and then Miles was looking at her funny. I like the idea about the water not being clear – def. makes sense – but it still doesn’t answer the question why Locke and Rose were healed and Ben got cancer. This episode frustrated me. I wish we would have gotten a few more answers to balance out all the questions.

    • dave

Since he came back to life, I thought they were worried he was getting John Locked

  • mel

It was a solid B. Josh Holloway’s acting was tremendous again tonight. I look forward to your writeup.

  • mags

I’ve never been first before! I agree that Sawyer’s acting was heart wrenching. What’s up with Claire turned Rousseau? Big change from smirking in the rocking chair with Christian.

    • Nicole

She was claimed and somehow this makes her a bad guy in the eyes of The Others. I am starting to think that maybe The Man In Black isnt the bad guy after all. In the last episode the MIB said all he wanted was to go home and that is practically what all the castaways want so maybe Jacob was prevented MIB from getting home, just as he was with the castaways.

      • wnt2kno

I think the whole being the smoke monster makes him lean towards bad.

      • DR

I actually agree … I’m not convinced MIB is the bad guy. If we assume he’s taken the form of Christian and now Sayid (who was made to look Christ-like last week) then maybe these are hints that MIB is good one in this scenario.

    • Your mom

Looks like your streak is still alive…

  • Josh Zimmerman

Waaay too much Kate. No Lock, Richard, or Ben. Too many dramatic pauses without significant answers. Come On Lost!

    • leo

I find Lennon really annoying. And the two ‘guards’ that went with Kate – what was the point in wasting time with them?

      • Amanda

So they could reveal valuable information?

      • Cardsgal

I think Lennon is merely a plot device to eat up time; every second that he is “translating” is a second that we get no forward movement of the story. Dogen’s “excuse” for not speaking English rang hollow.

      • RyanK

I don’t know. I liked the thought that Dogen needs to be impersonal. Especially cause they tried to make him seem more human in this episode. He reminds me of a man with Ben’s responsibility, yet he does his best to not let that define who he is. Unlike Ben who embraced, nay, came to depend on it.

      • RebeccaF

Sometimes I wonder who’s really pulling the strings, Dogen or Lennon? It’s the classic “King disguising himself as a servant” ruse.

      • Michael C.

The two guards were agents of a secret society long since inhabiting Hollywood, that goes simply by the initials E.X.P.O.S.I.T.I.O.N.

    • Nicole

I despise Kate centric episodes. It is just one stupid selfish act after another.

      • Dave

“It is just one stupid selfish act after another.” Exactly what was selfish about her taking the luggage back to Claire? What was selfish about her taking Claire to the home of the adoptive parents? What was selfish about her taking Claire to the hospital and staying with her there? All of this while knowing that cops are after her. Sounds pretty selfless to me.

      • watched17times

OK.. hey Nicole!!! Kate is one of my favorite characters! I would rather see Kate and Company than Ben and company. In past seasons they dedicated entire episodes to one “crew” and then another to the “other crew”. I am sure we will see that again until they all meet up..if they do. I liked how in the first season everyone was together so it was one story. However, they devoted a flashback story to one character. I am sure we will see that in the sideways flashes as well. Can’t complain..at least it’s still on!

      • LOL

Nicole isn’t much of a thinker.

    • Cardsgal

Amen. I enjoyed all of the island scenes sans Kate. And her flash-sideways scenes were tedious.

      • Laura

Totally agree. Whenever she’s on screen, the show SLOWS down too much. Didn’t care for the story line. And Claire? I didn’t miss her after she disappeared, so why should we care that she’s back? Hopefully this twist will pay off in the end.

      • Taco

funny how its mainly females who dont want to see kate… i say, more scenes, less clothing… andddd go

    • naynay

and way too many commercial breaks.

  • mags

    Oops…Foiled again.

  • amy

    first!

    • mags

Psych! … it happened to me too:)

    • Matt

      fail

    • Ashley G.

are people still doing that? get over yourself please

      • Bob

@Ashley G. Are people still complaining about people doing this? Get over yourself please.

      • really… how?

yes. we are still complaining- although i’ve never actually posted a complaint. why? bc it disheartens me that we live in a society where people don’t care how lame they are. and yes, the “first” thing is just lame. but i shouldn’t be surprised when we live in times where there is also no such thing as “selling out” anymore, only hey let me be an attention/fame whore no matter how much i may embarrass myself doing it bc 15 minutes is worth it…

  • Bob B

I’m with you. In many ways, this ep was a letdown after last week. I want to know more about unLocke and what he plans, not see Sawyer wander off and Kate go after him. But still, this ep had its moments, and I’m intrigued by this new character, Dogen.

    • watched17times

C’mon.. stop complaining people! If you have been a loyal fan from the Pilot episode until now, you would like the “human story” of the characters. That is what made MOST people fall in love with the show. Not the time travel or smoke monster.

      • watched17times

Oh and by the way, the writers said it would be mostly about the stories of the characters this season.

      • Dave

I agree with you. I love the character stories. People are complaining about the scene between Sawyer and Kate. I thought it was a great scene. I care about these characters a lot. I like to see them when they are at their most emotional.

      • Jess

agreed…The scene between Kate and Sawyer was good. For me, I took it as showing that Sawyer had actually found a love with Juliet, whereas Kate was still alone, ie. doesn’t have anyone who would keep her from running. Kate and Sawyer had always been similar in that sense, but now Kate knows Sawyer was that in love with Juliet, I think she just broke down…IMO :)

      • ugh.

i think bc people just have grown tired of the whole kate is a bad girl who needs redemption angle with kate. yawn already. it was interesting at first but some of us get tired of her character (and jacks) long suffering yet inscrutable gazes into the camera. i’m also a bit frustrated that people on the island don’t question each other enough. jack is finally demanding answers b4 acting, but i would’ve loved it if he or another character had actually stated that not asking questions might be why they are in this mess. or if jack told dogen that ignorance is not bliss and you can’t be pissed if i don’t blindly do what you want bc many of us don’t live life that way. you know, we like to use our brains. going back to kate though? i only enjoy her in her scenes with sawyer. the characters always have great chemistry and emotion to play off one another. but i never really got why tough as nails kate who has little conscience and a very violent side would have such a maternal streak. sure everyone wants someone to love, but the writers haven’t given me enough to really buy it.

      • Jess

@ugh seriously, my husband I have watched every single episode of Lost since the pilot, something I can’t say for any other tv show. From the very beginning, after each episode I ends, I ALWAYS complain about them not asking logical, common sense questions. Last night was no exception! Every single time, my husband still calmly listens to me rant and rave, then just says “If they did ask these questions, then it wouldn’t be a show.” haha…doesn’t make me feel any less frustrated, but it’s true I guess!

      • ugh

anyone notice that the characters that are the most interesting/likable are the ones that end up dead? and the milquetoast boring/stupid ones live. i’d say it was a weird but actually is probably true to real life. the a-holes always win in the end. man i’m depressed.

      • ugh

To Jess: i totally realize that and agree. but like you said, doesn’t make me feel any less frustrated. and i always feel like they could make the characters a bit more intelligent (and real) about how they communicate with one another. but not knowing their end game, i’m willing to let it slide. BTW, can someone explain to me why why why it was decided to use the @ symbol (which used to stand for “at”) to mean “to” or “in reference to”? Couldn’t they have picked a symbol on the keyboard that didn’t already have a dual meaning if it was such a bother using one extra character to write it out? It bothers me as much as people saying they are standing on line. no you are standing in a line. not on one. (well, unless you’re at the precinct in that lineup!) that particular one’s especially bothersome since the advent of the internet and the fact that you can actually be online.

  • Lemon

The phrase “Just Jack” makes me think of Will & Grace. Jazz hands!

    • Anna

      Totally thought the same thing!

    • Mary

I had the same immediate thought – Just Jack – Will & Grace! LOL

    • Anitamargarita

      I was “there” too.

  • Jason

Totally with you on this episode, Doc, especially in regards to the Claire-Kate flashsideways story. Kate goes from looking capable of killing Claire in the cab to capable of delivering the baby in the hospital in about 30 minutes, which was just a bit too fast a change for my liking. Apparently, we need to provide baby bags to felons to set them straight! That aside, I liked the episode overall and with the last scene found myself pondering a new question: did whatever happened to Claire, and what may soon happen to Sayid, happen to Rousseau?

    • Nicole

Yeah I agree with you and Doc, I dont see how Claire can trust Kate so easily in such a little amount of time. In response to Rousseau being affected by whatever happened to Claire and Sayid, I dont think Rousseau went through the same thing. She was on the island on the island for so many years so that is what made her what she was. Ben is another thing though. Because little Ben was brought to the Temple to be healed, so whatever happened to Ben clearly happened to Claire and Sayid. It is just a matter of what being claimed means? I assuming they are claimed by The Man in Black?

      • Cardsgal

I think the fact that the healing water was dirty made a difference. Ben was healed (presumably) in clean water; can we assume that the waters muddied when Jacob died and thus Sayid was infused with something different than what Ben got?

      • ES

Rousseau didn’t go through the same thing, but her entire party was infected with some mysterious “sickness”… remember her own lover trying to kill her in that one episode, when Jin showed up and witnessed it? I’m predicting they got the same “infection” that Dogen is talking about…

      • Nicole

Oh yeah. I forgot that they whole Rousseau team was “infected” by something, but could it have been by going through the same process as Claire, Sayid, and Ben? Seems like a little too much trouble for The Others.

      • Jacob

Could Claire’s trust of Kate be just another symptom of the supposed connection b/w the two storylines? That seems like a stretch, I know, but I sense a recognition is beginning to become more apparent: Jack’s look as Kate got away, Kate’s reaction to Claire saying Aaron…. I think that connection is becoming clearer to the castaways, and I wouldn’t put it past Claire to trust Kate because of this “instinct”. She knows (yet doesn’t know) Island Kate would never hurt her. I dunno. I just have to believe such a leap in logic would need to be explained.
Besides, Kate didn’t force Claire into the car, like she could have if her intentions were nefarious. She was about to leave, but Claire decided to go.
        *shrug*

      • Jughead

Yes. The “infection” is likely from the “sickness” Rousseau had been talking about in Season One, and in the Season Five flashbacks… only it appears Rousseau may have had the “sickness”… or not. Unclear. I am assuming this has something to do with the Smoke Monster, but of course, we don’t have enough information yet.

      • forrest

The sickness that infected Rousseau’s crew came after they discovered and searched the temple. I believe this was said during Jin’s white flash /jump through time.

  • Matt A.

I agree with you on almost all your points, Jeff. In fact, the only thing that I liked that you didn’t like was seeing Aldo again. I like it when LOST brings back characters from past episodes, so to me it was interesting recognizing him and then having Aldo announce to the non-remembering audience that he was in fact a small part of Season 3.

    • Shannon

Thanks for this…when he said the whole you don’t remember me thing I was like huh, have I seen him before???

      • leo

yeah but reveals like this just seem pointless and waste time.

      • robicor

it’s mac from it’s always sunny! they are just giving fans of both shows a reason to be psyched! i loved seeing him back again and that he was all pissed that kate didn’t recognize him!

      • RK

You really think that’s why they cast him?

    • wnt2kno

I actually liked his speech — it was a good way to bring back the timing of the show. To be honest, sometimes it does get confusing with the time flashing, the alt time, and the island time. I thought his role was to help ground the viewer. I was disappointed he was kind of a douche though.

  • Heather2

I am so glad that Sawyer finally told Kate to pretty much eff off. She deserved that. Josh’s performance brought me to tears.

One question though: Joan Hart? Why did she use that name? I can’t place it.

    • Petrie

She picked it based on her mother who was once on a TV show with an actress with a similar name.

    • GOB

      Melissa Joan Hart, of course!

    • B

I don’t see where he told her to F-off. He was honest in his explanation of his grief, and he basically told her that his involvement with Juliet began because he lost her (Kate). That’s not where it ended with Juliet, but telling Kate it began because he lost her wasn’t exactly an F-off.

      • BA

I’ll have to watch it again, because I don’t remember Sawyer indicating that he began his involvement with Juliet because he lost Kate. I thought he just said he didn’t want to be alone… I remember that scene with Juliet. They had just arrived at the Dharma Initiative and Goodspeed wanted them to leave on the next sub. Juliet was about to and Sawyer said “Just 2 weeks until Locke shows back up,” or something like that. So, when he was talking to Kate, I got the impression he just didn’t want to be alone in Dharma, not because Kate left. Or was that something I was supposed to infer? I can’t catch everything!

      • Susan

I think telling her she could get back to the Temple by nightfall, and later walking right past her and shutting the door, was pretty close to telling her to F-off. He made it pretty clear he didn’t want her around.

      • Peter

B- sorry wrong answer thanks for trying though. Maybe you should start watching the story as it was written instead of creating your own version. Sawyer did not want Kate with him and his message was, F-off! No cursing necessary.

    • watched17times

Kate used the name Joan Hart to check into a motel on the same episode she met Cassidy. Right? She was waiting for a letter. It had some money in it and she was sitting in the car reading the letter and crying. It is probably one of her fake id’s from being on the run.

I think Kate realized that Sawyer was really in love with Juliet and not her anymore and she was hurt. He wanted her to go back to the temple. Kind of an Ef off, that’s why I suspect he may go to the other side…dark side? dunno. just a theory. Sawyer knew deep down that he could never have Kate for keeps because she likes to run back and forth between him and Jack, and she is too restless to stay with him.

    • Sue

Joan Hart – anagram/unscramble it-although not complete…you can get the words John, Aaron, jarah, rat…
