There’s been a lot of ink spilled about Ellen DeGeneres’ American Idol debut tonight, where, as part of the Hollywood Week proceedings, she’ll take over the Chair Formerly Occupied by America’s Wackiest Twitterer. Admittedly, I was resistant to the idea of Ellen as Idol judge when the news was first announced back in September, but a lot of my opinion was based on her painful guest-judging stint on So You Think You Can Dance last summer. Since then, the comedian/talk-show host has repeatedly stated that she’ll take her Idol role more seriously. In fact, here’s what she had to say about criticism of her SYTYCD performance in an EW cover story last month written by my colleague Dave ‘Oscar Watch’ Karger:
“I just wanted to go see the show, and suddenly I was asked if I want to be a judge. And I’m like, ‘Well, those are better seats — I’ll be a judge.’ I just thought it would be interesting, and then I thought, ‘Oh, I have to actually critique them.’ I don’t know anything about dance, so I just really did focus on making it funny. But it’s a totally different thing [from] singing. And I will be funny [on Idol] — if something’s obnoxious or stupid and there’s a joke to be made, that’s what I do first and foremost. But I’ll have more to say about a singer — with singing, it’ll be funny, but there will also be true, honest critiquing.”
So maybe there’s reason to be a little hopeful about Ellen on Idol. Because while she might not have the music-industry background of Kara or Randy, she does have two things in common with Simon that Table Banger and One-Zillion Percent do not: She’s a quick and articulate ad-libber, and she’s a bona fide TV star. And I think sometimes that gets lost in the discussion of what makes Simon great. Sure, dude has cred — thanks to his experience launching a wide variety of hitmakers — but so do dozens of other music execs. Simon’s real Idol power comes from the ability to communicate his strong, informed point of view in zippy, often amusing sound bites. Kara may have written scads of recent hits, and Randy may have logged hours and hours of studio time with [insert name of your favorite music diva here], but not even a possession by the spirit of Ludwig van Beethoven would give them enough “credibility” to make them the stars of the show.
If Ellen keeps the focus on the singing — and resists the urge to take the focus off the contestants with an endless string of “punch line breaks” — she might be a better fit for the show that I initially thought. That’s a mighty big “if,” but going into tonight’s telecast, I’m keeping my expectations in neutral. How about you? Vote in our poll below, and check back at PopWatch around 9:20 ET tonight for my instant reaction to Ellen’s performance. My full TV recap will post early Wednesday morning. Looking forward to it. Someone as quick as Simon – that will be fun to watch. He’s always 2 steps ahead of everyone and it’s fascinating.
I expect Ellen to be happy. Very very happy.
You’re a homophobe.
Ellen or no Ellen, I am just so dang glad it’s finally Hollywood week and the ridiculous audition episodes are finally over! I love Ellen’s comedy and her show, so I am looking forward to seeing how it goes. I think she will be taking it very seriously but I am curious to see how she handles giving negative criticism when someone does badly.
I think Ellen is hysterical. And she is very likable. I’m looking forward to it. I hope she is prepared to take the heat though from idol fans. She’s used to being popular and well liked. But idol fans are a serious and at times vicious lot.
I hate how people say she shouldn’t judge because she’s not in the music industry. As if Kara, Paula, and Randy, who are in the music industry, really give constructive and useful criticism! I mean, I love the show, but honestly…
I think Ellen will do great!
I think Ellen will do a good job tonight. We do have to keep in mind that this is her very first time judging, and whatever happens tonight is likely to improve over the course of the season. But I think from the few clips I’ve seen she’ll be able to provide valuable critiques while throwing in a zinger or two.
I expect Ellen’s bad jokes. They should have gone for Conan.
ellen degenerate is just plain NASTY!
learn how to spell her name before you make judgements.
i think Ellen will be awesome she has a great personality and is so in sync with her self and has no problem being honest but in a nice (Ellen) way she will suprise all those who think the opposite way
keep it real Ellen and be yourself
Out with Ellen, IN WITH HOWARD STERN!!
I bet she’ll be a million, billion percent better than Randy.
haha. Anything has to be better than the overuse of hyperbolic percentages.
whatever
A say we give Ellen a chance before we judge how she does. I think she will be great for the show. Randy has stopped being funny and he says the same thing all the time. He wouldn’t speak if the word “dog” didn’t exist. Plus he doesn’t even try to cover up his laughter when it is hurting someone.
Simon has to be serious because he will be producing the music the idol does, so he has a serious investment in the decision.
Ellen will be fuuny yet kind. The criticism will be difficult for her since she is sensitive. She is always empathetic, which does not describe any of the other judges. It’s good to have humor- but pleasant humor, not Howard Stern humor. It’s a family show.
Compared to Joe “Yeah” Jonas, Posh “Skeletor” Spice, and Avril “I’m just saying” Lavigne, I think Ellen will be great! Slezak is totally correct in saying that what makes Simon great are his snappy one-liners. I often disagree with his opinion (see Adam Lambert’s Ring of Fire performance) but I can’t help but laugh when an auditioner is taken out in handcuffs and Simon turns to Kara and Randy and says, “Yes or no?”
Anyone who can make those snappy quips is one bazillion percent better than Randy, dawg! *insert table banging here*
WHY did they send Justin home??? (Justin the hot one who played the piano, cancer-survivor, vocal coach.) He was so great!
i don’t get it either…………..he was great
he was vegas – ugh
He was way too earnest. I think they didn’t like him on a personal level.
