Okay fess up – you were hoping as much as I was that Renee would turn the knife on herself, weren’t you? Her preposterous, Jack the Ripper moment came completely out of left field, though it (finally!) advanced the story and got Jack back in the driver’s seat of this now maddening (-ly boring?) journey to track down Sergei. But really, did she have to stab Jack in the process? And did the producers have to follow it up with such an excruciating exchange? (Renee: “I’ve made such a mess out of everything! I thought if I did this I could make it all right! I could have my life back!” Jack: “You can have your life back if you want. You just need to want it!”)
Thanks for that, Anthony Robbins! Bauer’s sudden about-face toward Renee made my neck hurt (wasn’t it just an hour ago that he got authorization to pull her from the mission?)… and now he’s looking like he wants to plant a giant buss on this loon? I was so hoping that she’d off herself when he turned his back, but alas… Renee lives to see another day and the possibility of a future romance between these two remains. Do you think he’s going to bring her along for a little R & R when he joins his family in L.A. at season’s end?
At least we had Dana, Kevin, and that prankster Nick to keep our pulses racing. Arlo was still as suspicious as ever (he’s starting to think she’s a cheater), but Dana managed to find a private room in CTU to help Kevin and Nick navigate their way into a police warehouse so they can find the stash for the cash. Gee, those CTU schematics are dang handy! I really enjoyed this part, though, especially when Mutt and Jeff failed to follow Dana’s direction and kept screwing up little details like typing in the right combination and locating the correct cage door. Bravo to Katee Sackhoff: the abject fear in her face had me biting my nails, especially when her Dana discovered how the guys made the (predictable) decision to stick around longer so Nick could find something more to steal. Sure enough, a cop showed up to make his scheduled inspection and Nick went all Grand Slam on his backside, thus leaving behind an even bigger mess for Dana. Boy, she’s up sheet creek now. The only moment that topped this entire sequence was the sight of Kevin and Nick giggling and swigging booze in the van, reveling in their victory. I’m actually starting to like these guys.
What’s happened to Fantastic Sam? Gone is the reporter-loving, Sassoon mousse-using, sensitive soul who wants to sign a peace treaty with President Taylor. Now he’s arresting anyone who seems even remotely connected to an attempt to overthrow his regime, a development that has Tarin running to his lover – Hassan’s daughter’s Kayla, no less! – for help. Too late; Nabeel, Hassan’s new henchman, came knocking on Kayla’s door and took Tarin into custody. Clearly, the producers want Hassan to get so unraveled that we start to question who’s the baddest dude here – his nuclear-loving brother Farhad or a human-rights-hating-heavy like Hassan. Whatever the outcome, I’m not feeling particularly engaged (but that Tarin, a.k.a. T.J. Ramini, sure is hot).
I’ve got two thoughts coming out of this seventh episode: one, Cherry Jones has got to be feeling a little unfulfilled at this stage because her President Taylor has been reduced to a hand-wringing worry wart who’s still stuck at the U.N. (how I wish something – anything! – involving her ex-husband or incarcerated daughter would suddenly come into play). And this business involving Sergei, Josef, and his radiation-poisoned dead son went on way too long and needs to be buried ASAP (out back is as good as any place, Father Gregor!). Thank goodness that Vlad’s calls got Jack closer to Sergei, who’s had his men park the truck carrying the nuclear rods somewhere around New York.
So what did you think? Will Kayla become the real hero to her country that her dad set to out to become? Is Nick the bigger threat to Dana than Kevin? And did you catch Vlad copping a feel of Renee’s butt before she stuck it to him? In the meantime, check out my up-to-date news on the long-gestating plan to turn 24 into a movie. Wow. I have never been first to post before. Renee obviously snapped and avenged a wrong from the past. It felt like something out of Psycho. Is it me or is Hassan’s hair getting poofier as he gets less concerned with human rights? My favorite was when Renee said, “The Russians took him” and the CTU folks monitoring above ground activities didn’t realize they had taken Jack through the sewers pipe and then to waiting car. Good ep. Looking forward to next week.
I agree good episode can’t wait for next weeks!
You both work for FOX, don’t you?
No Nihilistic I am sure they are just devoted fans who love the show. I, on the other hand DO work for Fox and would like to know what did you NOT like about the show?
@K, if you work for Fox I am President of the United States. Right! Don’t think so!
Wait you thought the Dana/Kevin was the highlight of this episode? And Renee was the weak point? I’ll admit the Dana/Kevin story wasn’t too bad this episode. For me Renee has been my favorite part of this season. Just because this is primarily an action show doesn’t mean we can’t have some emotion in the series.
Yea, I’m rather confused. I think she’s got it backwards. Renee/Jack has completely been the apex of the season thus far, while this Dana-Kevin storyline has been bathroom/snack time this season. Please let it end fast with Dana being carried out of CTU in handcuffs, preferably next week.
I agree. How are they going to explain how a past like hers could even work for CTU? With all thier technical gadgets and so forth there is NO way she could have passed any background check, even with her so called fake ID. That is not even remotely believeable Fox, come on!
Yeah, I definitely was NOT hoping Renee would off herself with that knife. (Although, when Jack left her alone in that small room by herself with a gun, I thought we might hear a single gun shot.)
Also, her Jack the Ripper moment “came out of nowhere”? Sure, Renee lost control and took it too far, but if I’m not mistaken, Vlad slapped her AND punched her hard before Renee stabbed him to death. Maybe it’s because I was raised by my mom and I would never put my hands on a woman, but to me that seemed to be a perfectly acceptable reaction.
Finally, the warehouse scenes were actually entertaining and exciting. (Though I was mostly excited about the prospect of this garbage subplot finally being over!)
Yeah, I’m sort of getting the feeling that Lynette doesn’t really get this show. Not sure she’s been following it for long.
I’ll add another to the chorus of huhs? for the review. The Renee stuff is by no means riveting, but it beats the hell out of the ridiculous Dana subplot, which is the 24 trope that really, really needs to be stabbed in the eyeball and heart, repeatedly: CTU agent has crazy son/daughter/spouse/significant other/stalker that compromises their work, draws them away from their desk on the most important day of the year, and leads others to suspicion. As Gob Bluth might say: “Come on!”
Agreed. Seems like Lynette is trying to sell the Dana storyline but no one is buying.
I think Lynette was being sarcastic. I don’t think it’s humanly possible for anyone to enjoy the Dana storyline. I thought it showed some promise when Nick pulled out that gun in the warehouse. Alas, it was a water gun.
I agree with you. This re-cap is odd. No way is the Dana/Kevin story more compelling than the Renee/Jack story.
Lay off Linette, please you lemmings. The Jack/Renee story is only the lesser of the two evils. The degree of difference in mediocrity between it and the Dana story is so slight that it’s like choosing between a dog sh*t sandwich and a cat sh*t sandwich. You don’t quite have the palate for either one of them and they both stink to high heavens. This season is shaping up to be Season 6 awful. Me thinks the show has run its course. There’s only so many times the same man can save the city/world/planet AND appear before a Senate subcommittee and still magically retain the anonymity required to go undercover.
nihilistic = obvious troll is obvious
Actually, I’m beginning to agree with Nihilistic. For the first time since before Season 3 (when I began following the show), I decided to read the recap than watch the episode. And I don’t think I’ll be watching the episode. Sad, but true.
Didn’t you at least like the part where Jack took the knife out of his chest and whipped it across the room right into the other guy’s throat? I thought that was a classic “24″ moment.
I’ve loved the Jack/Renee storyline, and I feel like, frankly, anything to do with Dana just makes me want to take a nap. I’m just waiting for them to pump the adrenaline–it’s not like the past seasons have been, but I figure it’ll work out anyway.
I’m totally fascinated with the Renee plotline, especially compared to her straight arrow character at the beginning of last season and how Jack is reacting to it. I’m also liking how this season seems at least marginally more realistic than some in the past. So far I’m pleased with how it’s going. Although it would have been great to have “Leoben” and “Starbuck” go at each other one last time (I miss Battlestar Galactica…)
I thought the “Kevin in the warehouse” scene was hilarious! It was like watching two stooges- didn’t seem like 24 for a minute
Cherry Jones is so overrated, I’m baffled by how much people love her. I don’t care that she won a Tony, once. She delivers every line the same way with the same expression on her face! Bo-ring.
She did win an Emmy for her role last season.
Indeed. If I were Jones, I’d bust into the writers’ room, slam the Emmy down in the middle of their table and demand that they give her a significant storyline this season. It’s been a waste so far.
I miss Pres. Palmer.
I totally agree. She is just such a waste of air time, with her whining and pretend concern. I keep wishing they would kill her off!
I miss Sherry Palmer. Now there was a well-written villain.
I miss Pres. Logan, and season 5…man that season had it all…except a good ending unfortunately
Here here, dude. Season 5 was the best this show ever had.
season 5?! C’mon that was ridiculous! No President would ever act like that nor would he ever be elected! I couldn’t STAND pres. logan nor most of that season.
What made that season was Jack (as usual), Bill and Christopher Henderson.
Season 2, for me, has been the most solid from beginning to end, with aside from first 15 hrs of Kim, having no retarded storylines.
To dude:
I disagree somewhat about season 5′s conclusion. Personally, I thought the cliffhanger ending was awesome, and led to numerous golden opportunities for season 6. The problem was, as we all discovered later, the ending led nowhere except the same old routine past the season 6 premier.
best pres we had.
I miss Jonas Hodges!
I agree she is so boring. I usually turn the channel when she is on. Renee is a psycho. Don’t care for her character very much. Just my opinion.
I don’t know if it’s just me but this season is not holding my interest at all in the early going.
Nope, not just you. This season’s been awful so far. I’m not liking the storyline, subplots and new characters at all this year (save for Pres. Hassan). Freddie Prinze Jr. seems to be just phoning it in, like he wasn’t getting any work so he decided to just take the next job that came along. The actor playing Dana is terrible. The Dana/Kevin subplot is ridiculous and unnecessary. That Arlo idiot is so over the top with his sexual harassment, there’s no way he’d still have a job. The actor playing Renee is not nearly good enough to play the “un-hinged cop on the edge” role. I was also hoping she’d turn the knife/gun on herself so we could move on. I’ll give it a few more weeks to see if it goes anywhere. If it’s still grinding along like it is then it may be time for me to give up on this show entirely.
I agree. Not into it as much. Hate the Dana plot. She’s a terrible actress. Give me more president and her aides…
I’m on the verge of pulling out of this thing right now and holding onto the remaining 17 hours of my life it seeks to steal.
You could stick to the recaps and then watch anything that might seem interesting. I chose to just skip this week’s ep (and I’ve followed the show since the S3 premiere).
I cringed when I read recently that Kiefer Sutherland was “open” to doing a 9th season. I wondered why he would want to be party to beating that horse dead and having the show fall further into the abyss. Then I remembered he really has no other prospects on the horizon. I’m sure he’s not eager to star in Mirrors 2.
I wonder if we’re watching the same show. The entire subplot with Dana and Kevin is complete idiocy. I actually find myself squirming whenever the show goes there. The Russian bad guys are poorly developed. Renee can be fun but her schtick is quickly becoming tiresome. Come on 24. It’s still early… I’m rooting for you.
@evanrb1 I am totally with you on this one. I can’t stand the Dana/Kevin storyline and last night is no exception. I still find Jack/Renee to be the most compelling even if she’s crazier than a sheet-house rat. I am waiting for 24 to take it up a notch b/c right now I’m underwhelmed so far this season.
I totally agree with you. The Data plotline is absurd — just not credible — on so many levels. Just end it already!
Oops! typo. Obviously I meant the “Dana” plotline…
I so agree. I just can’t muster much concern for these people! I was secretly hoping that Dana was leading them into a trap. Sure, her career at CTU would be over, but she’d be rid of Kevin!
I totally agree about the Data subplot! Do they honestly expect us to believe this Chinese boy keeps all of those gadgets in that tiny backpack?
I’m voting here too. The Dana story is now in need of a huge payoff. The Russians with the nuke rods is warming up and will be the major plot driving who knows how many threats and complications. This is 24. Nothing is at it seems.
Hate the Dana plotline. this reviewer does seem to be a ’24′ newbie. My Vote – - Dana out and bring on a familiar face, Morris?
I agree, either the reviewer is a newbie to 24 or a Fox sockpuppet trying to convince viewers that Dana isn’t one of the absolute worst characters on 24 ever.
Most fans despise the Dana subplot and are loving the Dark Renee/Jack action. I wish they’d kill of Dana soon and give Chloe a bigger role. It’s a shame they’re wasting so much time on Dana and her criminal activities.
Appreciate you speaking for most fans, kelly. I’m going to speak for most humans and say that was highly presumptuous of you.
Yeah, Kelly, I’m definitely missing the Kim/Cougar storyline right now. Or even the crazy Bauer family storyline. Or even Erin Driscoll’s psycho daughter. I’ll just go jump off a cliff now.
I agree that Dana is bad but Morris??? He was horrible!! Such a bad actor. The only thing to like about him is his British accent and even that gets a little thin after a while. Terrible actor.
Ummm, no! I wasn’t hoping that Renee would turn the knife on herself or that her actions were preposterous. Vladimir beat and raped (unconfirmed) her 6 years ago and then she had to sleep with him 30 min. ago. Her actions were born from desperation and disgust, that she had subjected herself to this for nothing. Imagine allowing this guy to put his hands all over you after what he had done. Loved Jack’s sniper skills immediately after Renee stabbed him, his speed and accuracy with the knife landing right in the bad guy’s throat. I got all excited! The moment between Jack and Renee felt right. Jack was trying to comfort her because he understands a lot of what she has gone through, and he feels guilty. On another note Tarin is gorgeous and Kayla is going to step on. Dana is still an idiot, but the situation last night was comedic. Can’t wait for next week-bring the pain.
yeah I actually cheered (way to go Jackie boy) when that happened. Whoa, I was so shocked to see Renee go all psycho on Vlad, then it seemed like a nightmare when she stabbed Jack. if it hadn’t been unintential, I wouldv’e hated her right then and there. Tarin is cute and I happened to like him and Kayla together. Prez Hussan is clearly not dealing from a full deck of cards. I can’t help but wonder about him. I really enjoyed the episode.
How do you know Renee will live to see another day? We’re only 7 hours into this day/season of 24.
I’m thinking she’s got to die to piss Jack off enough to do his usual business. I think he’s the only one that can be ‘redeemed’.
I’ve just never thought that Jack should have a romantic interest. Its never seemed like a good fit for him. He just needs to bust some skulls and stop the bad guys.
BTW: really, we’re going to electrocute him again?
Just want to say that this is another great headline/article title. I’m really enjoying these!
This show has jumped the shark, I cannot suspend my belief any more. It’s just plain stupid. No one in those positions would act that moronic. I’m just not buying it. Sorry, it’s lost all it’s intrigue and suspense. I officially have resigned as s Jack Bauer fan. It’s all down hill from here.
How about those glasses?
I couldn’t tell it was Jack for a minute – lol
Jumped the shark? No, the Dana storyline is way beyond jump the shark. We should be coming up with a new name here.
Example:
24 was good until it hired the criminal.
Then we see it down the road.
Crap, Chuck just hired the criminal. CSI just hired the criminal. The Office just hired the criminal.
Perhaps our jump the shark defining moment has yet to happen, but this Dana storyline’s not helping at all.
Nice that Jack Bauer was not only able to survive the knife wound inflicted by Renee, but was also able to get himself stitched up and have the wound dressed all nice and tidy a few minutes later. Just Sayin’—Still enjoying this show despite the supposed shark-jumping moments. Thank God for no Cougar sub-plots!
huh? how was it “stitched” and “dressed all nice and tidy”??? It obviously wasn’t more than a superficial wound, but all Renee and Jack did was clean it and put a compress on it. You can see him clearly bleeding when the Russians take him and even in the preview for next week when he’s being tortured.
Forget all you guys, this was the best episode of the season. Jack’s knife toss into that dude’s neck was super cool! The adrenaline finally started flowing last night…this is FUN tv, nothing more…if you’re looking for straight laced suspense and intrigue you’re barking up the wrong tree. I love the people who are claiming the show jumped the shark and are bailing out now, hahaha, c’mon! This show is the SHARK, always has been. It’s all about Jack Power baby! And crazy redheads stabbing rapist foolz in the face, AWESOME!
haha completely agree. Although I wouldn’t say it is the shark. I’ve always hated the BS story lines of Wayne Palmer/Alan Milikin or Kim/annoying 7 yr old or Driscoll/psycho daughter and now Dana/Kevin. I never understand why the writers reach for stories to fill air time when they can just scrap those characters screen time and focus on the good characters like Jack and Renee of this season.
But yeah, how you can not be into this season is beyond me. Some people just don’t know good theater when they see it.
If you want unintelligent tv, go watch American Idol or Dancing with the stars.
I hate the term “jumping the shark”. But if you want those type of moments, they have been going on since season 2 and it went on again last night with jack taking the knife out of him and throwing it to that Russian baddie. That was crazy unreal.
agreed it so cliche.
You neglected to mention that then Jack seemed to forget he was just stabbed in the stomach altogether. He didn’t so much as grimace for the rest of the episode. I guess Renee missed any major organs…
yeah because army rangers (which Jack was for a time) don’t ever throw knives at their enemies. of course not.
Finally… There is what we’ve all been waiting for: Jack in action… and Jack in love. When Renee said she had no one to go to, I was almost begging for Jack to say to her:”You have me”… And he did… in his sexy, raspy voice…
This episode is great. Even the previously disappointing sub-plot with Dana and her thuggy ex is getting interesting. Stupid, but interesting. What’s more, just when you think Jack could catch a break, things went wrong. The Russians came. And he offered to have himself taken by them to buy CTU some time. Always for the greater good, Jack… With him being taken hostage, this season of 24 finally begins to rock… All in all, this is still fantastic TV. Few could top it. All the more reason to have it back for at least another season. Please…
Jack’s knife-throwing skills were pretty awesome but it was amazing how his own knife wound didn’t bother him at all. Renee repeatedly stabbing Vlad was a little overkill.
Surely these CTU people in NYC know that there are tunnels all over the place.
You have to remember everything he’s been through, Beatings, torture, ect. you name it he’s had it all. so did you really think a knife wound would slow him down? I don’t think so.
I know. Him and Tony Almeida are freaking Terminators after surviving so many near death experiences. Multiple gun wounds, tortures, car bombs, lethal injections, you name it. Nothing less than a headshot will put them out of commission, and even then, that’s questionable. XD
haha or how about jack being brought back to life after being tortured to death (literally) and then running all over LA literally 10 minutes later for the next 5 hours.
I will say it again. Worst. Mistake. Ever. Bringing Jack Bauer back to life in season 2. hahhahah
im sorry but i LOVE the renne jack storyline! its awasome and they kick ass together. im just wondering if well get to see renne fighting for her man.. but not with the Russians, but with that audry girl! or whatever her name is …
