'24' movie: Could it work?

Jack Bauer has the same initials as James Bond and Jason Bourne. Soon, he might be joining them on the big screen: The long-rumored 24 movie is moving closer to being a reality, reports EW’s Lynette Rice, with State of Play screenwriter Billy Ray in talks to write the script. Kiefer Sutherland has indicated that the film would keep the show’s all-in-one-day conceit but would ditch the real-time, allowing Jack to, say, fly from Serbia to London without the viewer suffering six episodes of bad airplane food.

Personally, I’ve got mixed feelings about the potential movie. Few TV shows feel so laser-welded to the television medium as 24. It’s right there in the title: 24 hours, the length of a complete TV season, with commercial breaks. Then again, the 24 franchise could use a little jolt: ratings are down this season, and the move to New York hasn’t stopped the show from feeling a few seasons past its prime. (Although, counter-opinion, my mother still loves it.)

I like the choice of Billy Ray as a screenwriter. He wrote the screenplays for Volcano, Hart’s War, and Flightplan — all terrible. But he also wrote AND directed Shattered Glass and Breach, two playfully twisty little films with themes of espionage and corporate malfeasance that play right into the world of 24. Those two movies are so good I’m thinking it might be that Ray wrote excellent screenplays for those earlier films that were then ruined by bad directors. (Maybe not so much with Volcano.)

TV-to-Movie adaptations are always tricky, especially when a movie is being conceived while the show is still running. X-Files: Fight the Future comes to mind: It had a bigger budget (exploding buildings! third-act vacation to Antarctica!) , but its very hugeness seemed to obscure all the little sardonic touches that made X-Files such a great show.

My only piece of advice for the 24 producers, then, is: Keep It Simple. Don’t feel the need to make a globe-trotting Casino Royale-esque action epic, with Parkour chases and comely femmes fatale. We don’t need to see Jack Bauer Goes to Kabul (although that would work as a sitcom reboot.) We go to 24 for the twisted espionage, the feeling that our closest friends, co-workers, and even adorable family members could turn out to be a double agent for the terrorists/the evil corporation/the government.

What do you want to see from a 24 movie, PopWatchers? Are you satisfied with Kiefer Sutherland’s idea of “a two-hour representation of a day,” or would you prefer two real-time hours in the life of Jack Bauer like 24: Redemption? And if Billy Ray doesn’t direct, who would you like to see helm the feature? In my dreams, it would be twist-master Chris Nolan, but I imagine he’s a little busy.

24: Redemption did absolutely NOTHING for me. I think a movie that ditches the real time would work. Just keep it PG-13 is all I ask.

I COMPLETELY AGREE….. It was just an episode… nothing different…. 24 needs something to boost the appeal… otherwise people will just wait until they can rent it…

Redemption wasn’t perfect, but I liked how it gave a weightier focus on worldwide terrorism than the rest of the series. When Jack’s been stuck at L.A. for six seasons, having him in Africa was a refreshing change. While it didn’t match up with 24′s best moments, it was definitely a breath of fresh air after the sterile season 6.

I agree, it was great to see something set elsewhere, to see why the consequences hit Jacks home country and what life is like elsewhere for the goodies and baddies.

Funny, I watch 24 to watch Jack Bauer kick ass…

    • krayzeman

      Agreed.

      • Lily

Agree. Love Jack Bauer. I’d see a 24 movie in a second. It’s the most edge-of-my-seat hour per week. eek.

  • Ryan

I want Mandy to return if this movie happens!

    • Kymberly K

      She was pretty bad ass!

this season is SO TERRIBLE. make the movie but in the name of christ almighty not another season!!!!

This season is not all that bad if you get rid of Dana’s awful plot. This is leaving a worse taste on everyone more so than the cougar plot. At least that only last an episode or 2 back then. Season 6 was truly terrible, then season 4, and this season is tied with season 3

      • Ralph

I hate the Dana plot and it completely ruins the show for me. Her background, the nerdy guy flirting with her, and being engaged to Freddie Prince Jr. Just kill her off now! I pray that there is a great payout for all this agony.

how is this season tied to season 3? Jack only mentioned it in passing in reference to that informant at the start of the pilot… unless i missed something?

A 24 movie? Maybe that’s why this current season is so bad… so Fox won’t pick it up and they’ll be free to make the movie. All I can say is… ugh.

  • Madd

I honestly haven’t been watching the show this season, but I did like Shattered Glass and State of Play.

  • JackBauerEnthusiast!

I’m so pumped for this! It has to happen! As long as they keep the same writers from the show, the movie will be so bad ass!
But like the article says, I hope they don’t go overboard it.

I think a 2 hour movie still in a 24 hour format would be silly. It should be real time and cover a 2 hour period.

  • Cindy Sue

A chance to stare at Keifer for two hours bring it on…but lets make it better than this season.

  • Chenbot 2.0

Yawn – 24 hasn’t been good in years. The movie would be the same: Jack retires … emergency = unretired … mole … computer geeks … Chloe awesomeness … cougars and Kim … torture and growling … somehow Iowa now has mountains … bad guy dead … Jack’s a maverick but saves the world, so listen to him … just don’t listen to his ideas on health care.

    • Kymberly K

THATS WHY ITS SOOO GOOD! hahahaha… He’s is the new James Bond! :-p

  • amorg

I love “24″ since it’s first season/it always keeps me on the edge of my seat and as for the new buildings and people/that and
jack are what makes it great/Do a Movie later…. Don’t take away my “24″ on TV

  • foolen

i like this season… dana obvioiusly is annoying… but im totally digging jack as always..and freaking freddie prinze jr’s character although not as big of a role is awesome, its entertaining as always!

    • foolen

ohh…if they do a movie they should find a way to keep it in real time…its more exciting that way!

    • Kymberly K

I HATED DANA AT FIRST TOO!…..still kind of do…. and freddie… gosh … don’t get me started… at least he isn’t doing AS BAD… sooo i give him props. :-p

This season is so slow…the 2-hour season premiere had the helicopter exploding and thats it. Renee is the only character doing anything remotely like the shows of old. Chopping off the guy’s hand, stabbing the other guy and Jack…which forces Jack to be bad ass. Other than that, it has been a bunch of talking and more talking. I tune into 24 for action and espionage. Nothing has been surprising, I knew from the first 15 minutes that President Hassan’s brother was a bad guy. A sniper shot here, a Doctor’s office ransacked, and irradiated Russian shot for being sick. Nothing too exciting has happened…I only tune in because I’ve been a fan of the show from the get-go, but I’m about to turn off the television…and I’m not about to shell out hard earned cash to watch the same bad plot on the big screen.

  • RK

It’ll work. The 24 hours is just a TV plot contrivance; Jack is a big enough character to be on the big screen. Unless, of course…he’s running out of time…

  • Kymberly K

I would REALLY want a 2 hour representation of a day! Jack Bauer is my hero! He can save the world in a day, and if that means we need a style of movie that allows him to travel around the world to save it, so be it! lol…

I did have the want that Kim would turn out to work for the government in some way, as an agent or an office worker, so she can still have a big part in the movie as the strong woman she is.

Hmmm! Love the idea of a 24 movie in a whole day format. To make this work they should go for non-mainstream directors: Alejandro González Iñárritu who directed Babel or Kathryn Bigelow of The Hurt Locker. I want something a little edgier and grittier from our Jack, probably in the Middle East or N. Korea. Less tech and more realism please. Storyline should move away from nukes to maybe a 9/11 storyline such as a hijacking. To be honest, I wouldn’t mind an origin or backstory, and maybe flashbacks to a younger Jack. Maybe have an assassin from his past after him. Love 24, adore kiefer, and love the concept. So excited for this.

I think Kathryn Bigelow sees herself as a mainstream director, and she is one. It’s just that she’s spent 20 odd years swimming againast the tide because “women can’t direct action” so she hasn’t had the best of luck, But the Director of Point Break, K-19 and yes, Near Dark aintout of the mainstream. I’m just glad she’s finally getting wider respect. She’s deserved better for a long time.
