PopWatch asks: What is pop culture's WORST. KISS. EVER.?

Maybe it’s because Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. Or maybe it’s because I spent a lot of yesterday watching MTV’s Jersey Shore marathon and had to relive all the nasty lip-locking of the show’s guidos and guidettes. But lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about what pop culture’s ultimate WORST. KISS. EVER. is. Any thoughts?

From the photo here, you can quickly see a few of the ones that have grossed me out over the years: Snooki and “The Situation” making out in the Jersey Shore hot tub; Data and Borg Queen in Star Trek: First Contact; and Paula and Simon’s sesh during American Idol. All three want to make me curl up and die—or alternately run for the Celibate Hills.

But, honestly, there are tons—slash, millions!—more. In fact, tons that we’re not even picturing here. Others that come to mind: Any smooch between Izzie and George on Grey’s Anatomy; the time Charlotte was licked on Sex and the City; David Gest and Liza Minnelli.

Now, this is where you come in, dear PopWatchers, because I want your opinion: What is pop culture’s WORST. KISS. EVER.? And why? Sound off in the comments section, please!

Lisa Marie Presley and Michael Jackson. Now that was cringeworthy. Yuck!

    • crispy

Totally. This is not even a fair debate, that kiss was just so gross.

      • jordan

in the mummy when imhotep kisses evie, i actually gagged.

      • amj

Yes, Jordan, forgot about that. It was pretty hard to swallow.

      • jezoebel

Good choice! Still nauseating all these years later.

    • Mavis

You beat me to it Diane! This one makes my stomach turn and I usually will attempt to change the channel if I see this smootch coming!

      • shourite

UGH!!! MJ and LMP, totally grotesque!!

    • Ceballos

      THIS x 1,000!

    • Yes

No kidding, I thought that one was obvious and would be the first one mentioned.

    • bgrass13

Yes, yes, yes! That was the first thing that jumped to mind. What a horrible, unnatural spectacle to have witnessed. Not a “thriller” – just creepy…

    • Liza

Yup, that made me slightly nauseous. So fake and disgusting!

    • amj

that was my first thought as well….ugh that was uncomfortable and horrible to look at…most definitely Lisa Marie and Michael Jackson.

    • DE

      Ditto!

    • Gina

That was the day Elvis really died!! He took one look and gave up all hope!

    • maiv

      ew this one wins

    • Madox

This was the first thing that popped into my head when I read the title of this article. By far the worst kiss.

    • Karen

That is exactly where my mind 2went…

    • Tuzo

      We have a winner!

    • stan

      This gets my vote…forever.

    • Tim

Agreed. Now and Forever. Disgusting and disingenuous.

    • Ann

All you haters and ignorant people…is that why Lisa’s pining away from him now?

      • crispy

Does her husband know she’s pining away for a dead man?

      • MsSuniDaze

Do you mean pining away ‘for’ him? I can totally see her pining away from him. No offense to Michael, but I prefer to see him as Asexual. My eyes can take only so much.

      • Robert

        ha ha ha, good one!

    • MsSuniDaze

Ha. This is the first one I thought of too. So gross.

    • Nerwen Aldarion

Rats you beat me to it!

    • SirLizard

Yep, Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley shared the most awkward kiss I have ever seen on TV or in any media. Even seeing Anna Nicole Smith smooching her Crypt Keeper husband would rate as less cringe-worthy than the MJ/LMP kiss. Even remembering it creeps me out.

    • Jonny

Was there ever any doubt about the MJ/Lisa Marie tongue lashing being the oogiest?

    • J.

Yeah, that one was by and large the worst of all time. PERIOD.

    • stefanie

absolutley agree. that was the number one worst kiss ever

    • Mo

You forget about Liza Minnelli’s wedding kiss!! That was even more disgusting than Michael and Lisa Marie’s!

      • Juniper

I agree. That was the first thing that popped into my mind. The Liza Minelli-David Guest kiss takes the cake. She looks like she’s making out with a mannequin. Old people tongue… ick.

  • Mike

Linda Evans and Rock Hudson – or John Forsyth and Ali McGraw – Dynasty

    • Silv

OMG I remember these – and totally agree!

  • Ellioott

Yep. agreed. Lisa marie and Michael were just….ugh…

  • Lia

Gemma & Tig, Sons of Anarchy, I wanted to stick forks in my eyes
    YUCK!

    • Leslie

Ha I totally agree! That was disturbing.

  • King Kool

What about Britney, Madonna and Christina Aguilera? God, that was awful (and I really like when girls kiss).

    • amj

I actually didn’t mind that one!

    • Elliot

You’re in the minority, KingKool. Madonna/Britneysmoochgate was awesome.

      • Castiella

I thought it was gross, just because it was sooo… I dunno. Publicity whoreish.

    • Hershey

Yeah- I’m with KingKool- I want to watch girls kiss because they want to kiss each other- not because their handlers think it will be ‘shocking’.

    • Moxie

Agree, Madonna & Brit, sooo obvious, so pub stunt, so gross!

  • Corey

Prince & Appollonia in Purple Rain. Prince is a pretty sexy man…as long as you never see him kiss anyone.

    • Sarah D

That entire scene was just gross/hilarious. This one totally should be on the list!

    • Brixe

Urgh, good one. He was slobbering all over her, I remember. Brrr…

  • Dan Daoust

Ralph Macchio and Elisabeth Shue, The Karate Kid. He looked like he was trying to eat her, she looked like she was trying to pull away.

    • Kerri

BAHAHAHAHA! I totally agree with that!

    • Heather

OMFG. I made that same observation too!!!

  • mrgnexus

    Real life:
There’s reasonable consensus already that the Michael & Lisa-Marie kiss was mega-cringeworthy.

    Fiction:
It was only after ‘Return of the Jedi’ when we realized all that Luke & Leia lip-smacking from the two previous films was an uncomfortable precedent designed to make people question George Lucas’ sanity.

    • UGH

I don’t think Lucas ever originally planned to have Luke & Leia as siblings. I always cringe when I rewatch it.

      • starwarsfan

In an interview during a Star Wars retrospect, George Lucas stated that he had always intended that the two protagonists would be twins. He toyed with different versions of them, but eventually decided on the sister and brother twins. Knowing that in advance might make the kiss unconfortable to watch, but in the context of the scene, it wasn’t really very disturbing.

    • crispy

All that Luke and Leia lip smacking? Uh, do you mean the ONE time they kissed? And that wasn’t even a genuine kiss; it was to make Han jealous. Somebody needs to go back and watch Star Wars again.

      • AAR

She kisses his cheek in the first film, before they swing across the chasm. And it doesn’t matter the motives- kissing your sibling (twin!) in that manner is pretty much frowned upon everywhere outside West Virginia.

      • mrgnexus

I engaged in a little bit of hyperbole in my post — but that kiss in Empire lingered a little longer than was necessary to make Han jealous.
However, as a frequent reader of Star Wars comics and novels in my youth, there was a lot of inappropriate sexual tension in some of the expanded universe books.
Yes yes — those are considered non-official NOW — but Lucasfilm approved them at the time, and if the plan had always been to have Luke & Leia twins — those books never would have made it to print.
        On the whole — Ick.

      • crispy

LOL! Well, kissing his cheek isn’t “lip smacking.” And honestly, I didn’t find that kiss romantic in nature. It was for good luck.

      • mjade27

There are also cut scenes from Empire where there is more full-on, make-out kissing between Luke and Leia (originally she was supposed to be very torn about whether she was in love with Han or Luke), so Lucas did not even know then that he was going to make them siblings. And in retrospect, it is pretty icky.

      • crispy

Far be it for me to defend grand hack George Lucas, but I gotta disagree with this. In Empire, Yoda states, “There is another.” I am confident Lucas knew that other was Leia. And I’ve never heard of these cut scenes you mention, and I consider myself a pretty knowledgeable Star Wars geek. For the record, Wookiepedia has no mention of them.

      • Nerwen Aldarion

As a knowledgable Star Wars Fan I have NO idea what mjade is talking about!

The the one real lips on lips kiss between Luke and Leia was in ESB, and that was to get Han jealous…and it was not a real enticing kiss. Honestly I laughed later when it turned out they were siblings because I actually thought when they kissed that “It’s like she’s kissing her brother”

Maybe my subconsious knew something I didn’t

      • mrgnexus

        Okay — kissing siblings aside…
There’s NO way Lucas had it all mapped out to the last detail. When Yoda says “There is another…” I’m pretty sure he isn’t talking about Leia (who has no hand in the demise of the Empire beyond being a foot solider) the ‘other’ is Anakin Skywalker.

      • crispy

I’d agree with you if we were just talking about A New Hope. No way Lucas planned then that Luke and Leie would be siblings. But by the time they were filming Empire, I am pretty confident Lucas had mapped out the rest of the story.

  • Michael H.

Lisa Marie Presley and Michael Jackson – no contest and I’m surprised it wasn’t mentioned in Tanner’s original post.

    • Ann

coz Tanner is not a ass

      • Ann

        *an ass

  • UGH

I heard that Kelly McGillis thought Harrison Ford was a bad kisser (from “Witness”) and then just a few years ago she came out of the closet.

    • RK

What do the Amish know about kissing? :)

    • Moxie

Loved that film, and Harrison Ford can bad kiss ME anyday! Of course I’m not gay so maybe that explains her response.

  • anon

Chloe and Jimmy from Smallville. Any kiss really. It was just so gross and awkward. No chemistry. But their last kiss (just because I thought it was over for good) just made me ill and throw things at the tv. Cuddy and Lucas is another gross one.

    • Amanda

No opinion on Cuddy and Lucas, but Cuddy and House was slightly disturbing. No offense to Hugh Laurie, who is a very attractive man, but I’ve never been so aware of how badly someone kisses until I saw that scene. Did not look pleasant in the least.

      • Lala

He was a LOT less awkward making out with Sela Ward in season two.

      • anon

I agree that the House and Cuddy kiss was awkward as well, but nowhere near the hideousness of Cuddy and Lucas. I much preferred the House/Cameron kiss myself.

  • Ceballos

Assuming that we’re leaving Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley out of the discussion (because that REALLY is the all-time worse), I’ll go with Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze/Whoopi Goldbert in “Ghost.”

Now, I enjoy “Ghost” and I’m usually able to suspend my disbelief in movies, but I’m not strong enough to push the “Demi Moore is making out with Whoopi Goldberg” thoughts out of my mind during that crucial scene. Yes, I get that Swayze was possessing Whoopi’s body and it’s this beautiful moment, but I still get a icked out.

    • amj

LOL, forgot about that but yes you are right was a little too much and made the movie a little less romantic.

    • Tori

I don’t think they kiss in that scene, do they? I think they dance and kind of hold each other, but I don’t remember any kissing going on.

      • Ceballos

You’re right. We don’t see Whoopi and Demi kiss on screen, we see Demi and Patrick.

What I’m saying is that I, personally, have trouble pushing the idea that it’s really Demi and Whoopi’s characters kissing since they’d shown them slow dancing before. But that may be just me.

      • amj

Well actually we see the kiss between Moore and Swayze but we know that the kiss is through Goldberg since Swayze is already dead. So it is a perceived three way kiss but not a visually shown one.

    • RyanK

I’m the same way. It doesn’t matter that they show Moore and Swayze. I can’t help but have Whoopi in my head.

  • Sophie

Al and Tipper Gore at the 2000 Democratic National Convention

    • DE

oh yeah, he was like totally eating her face

    • Ambient Lite

He sure was. Totally unwatchable, had to flee the room. He might as well have been licking her face.

      • Dahlia

It was like being forced to watch your parents make out.

    • Mary

Thank you!!! That should totally be up there!

    • Nerwen Aldarion

HAHAHA I forgot about this one

    • sbwm

So disturbing and unnecessary. This one came first to my mind even before the Lisa Marie/MJ moment.

    • SirLizard

Sophie, thanks for reminding me of that. NOT!!! You are so right. That was so icky!

    • Lala

OMG, I thought I had forever taken that image out of my memory. So much for that. Ewww!

    • mld

Thank you! I was hoping someone would remember that debacle. Ugh.

    • Moxie

OMG , YES that was discusting!

  • Josie

Chandler and Phoebe on Friends (although surprisingly not Ross and Phoebe).

Kevin Spacey and the military father dude in America Beauty. I still watch through my fingers.

Angelina and her brother…Angelina and Billy Bob.

Andy and Oscar on the office…anyone?

Halle Berry and Adrien Brody’s awkward Oscar kiss.

Hugh Heffner and any playboy Bunny?

    • Ceballos

If you mean MICHAEL and Oscar from “Gay Witch Hunt” episode of “The Office”, that’s one of my absolute favorite kisses EVER. So uncomfortable! (Especially since the kiss apparently wasn’t scripted.)

      • IAA Louie and Mark

That’s one of my favorites too. It’s so ackward. They both just stand there, but somehow a kiss happens! So FUNNY!

      • Ambient Lite

Ha! Loved that, was just waiting for Oscar to punch him.
As for Hef, not sure that I’ve ever seen him really go at it with any of his “ladies”, I haven’t really found it offensive.

      • Lala

That scene is so incredibly awkward it’s absolutely amazing. Whenever it’s on, I always laugh and cringe at the same time.

    • amj

I will support Angelina and her brother..ugh that is gross and uncomfortable.

    • Nerwen Aldarion

YEs but the kiss between Chandler and Pheobe was SUPPOSED to be uncomfortable. It kind of defeats the purpose of nominating it for a bad kiss when…well that was what they were going for

      • Angie

lol. Exactly. It wasn’t cringe-worthy, it was HILARIOUS. Rolling on the floor, knee-slapping hilarious.

      • Sarah

Yep, agree about how the Chandler/Phoebe kiss was meant to be cringe-worthy, and therefore defeating the purpose of this list. I also agree with everyone about MJ/Lisa Marie. So wrong!!

    • Catherine

I don’t think the Halle Berry/Adrian Brody kiss was awkward at all! In fact I thought Brody just was so into it that Halle Berry was shocked but I think it was beatifully done for something that was not planned at all!

      • Sue

Yeah, it was good. It made me look at Adrian Brody in a whole new way.

      • TM

I HATED that kiss! Just because a woman is pretty and you’re a horny movie star you don’t get to grab her and kiss her without her agreement. Wanted her to knee him in the balls. Have been anti-Brody ever since.

    • Meier

      Adrien Brody RULES for that!

    • Sam

Angelina and her brother – so gross!

    • Moxie

You can sure think off all the grossest kisses, I pity you for your memory banks….and uh mine now too!

  • Cy

Wesley and Cordelia on Buffy. There was saliva everywhere. Kinda disgusting.

    • Via

Speaking of Buffy (and saliva), we can’t forget that kiss Sarah Michelle Geller shared with Selma Blair during Cruel Intentions.

      • Psac

        That was a good one.

      • KEVIN

oh no! That Cruel Intentions kiss is one of the best!

      • Elliot

Actually the saliva-heavy kiss that Mia Kirshner and that really old woman had in NOT ANOTHER TEEN MOVIE (In a scene that parodied Cruel Intentions) was funny yet horribly wrong/gross

      • Castiella

Ugh… the spit-string. Yeah, that was nasty.

    • Gina

Cordelia was wiping spit off her face in that scene forever! I thought it was hilarious.

    • LAJackie

That is the first one that came to my mind when I saw the headline (Wes and Cordy). Very funny, awkward kiss after all that sexual tension.
