I am looking forward to new David Cook music. I saw him in concert last year. Him and his band are great live act. If you get a chance GO!

  • rrprieto

Awesome interview Michael. Lots of juicy morsels thrown our way. Hope you interview David Cook again soon.

  • Holly

I find him to be such a fascinating person. He is so honest and down to earth. I have a feeling his sophmore cd is going to blow us out of the water! I can’t wait to hear the end result. I could listen to him talk about his craft for hours! Thanks for a great interview! You both seem like such cool, nice guys!

  • tess

Thank you for this amazing interview with David Cook. It was worth the wait.

  • Jumper

Really intrigued by the layerd voices a la Imogen Heap track Cook spoke about. I hope it actually happens. Also happy to hear about the Skib, Tiemann, Cook colaboration.

    • Helena

That sounds interesting but hardly original if Imogen Heap did it. Still, better than what he talke about.

  • Jen

Awesome interview! Thanks so much for asking questions about the music! I can hardly wait for the new album.

  • Jessica

    Amazing interview! thanks a million!!

I don’t like Katy Perry–she’s souless, has no content, is empty headed and I hate her music. David Cook can make anything good. I haven’t heard a bad song from him yet. His covers are always unbelieveable. I don’t think anyone can ruin David’s music. If nothing else, we’ll have songs to skip on the new record. But I can’t imagine David recording something he hasn’t cookified and morphed into something fantastic.

      • reinharv

That is so true. David Cook puts his soul & passion into everything. He cookifies everything – puts his own stamp on it. Even after he’s recorded a song, he still tweeks it during his live performances. I don’t skip any of his songs & am still listening to his album & always changing my “favorite.” I have bought albums before & after two listens – it doesn’t get played after that. Not so with DCTR. I am hungry for new stuff & look forward to buying anything he puts out because I know he’ll go all out.

  • Helena

I really can’t get over this! Max Martin who writes for Katy Perry, Britney and Backstreet Boys? You’ve got to be kidding Dave. Next we ‘ll see you doing a trapeze act on the AMA’s

    • Kristyn

He didn’t say he was working with him or that he had. He just said it was a possibility. Even if he writes something with these people it doesn’t mean it will make the record. Calm down.

Anyway, I can’t wait to hear the new record, and he looks great in that jewel-toned shirt!

      • Helena

Well, some of it has got to make the record since that’s all he’s mentioned writing. I didn’t hear any collaboration with Bono or Paul Mc Cartney! Starting to lose interest in this guy, very disappointing.

      • Qtpii

I’m sure the rest of David’s fans won’t miss you since all you seem to do is criticize without even hearing the final product. Good riddance to you and have a great life following whoever meets your standards. For me, I’ll stick with David. He knows what he’s doing and loves to please his fans.

Max Martin and Ryan Tedder’s names being thrown around make me wonder if RCA is thinking Dave = male Kelly Clarkson. I used to think of him that way during American Idol. Hmm. Now here’s an idea: David Cook and Kelly Clarkson cowrite. Make it happen, label people!

    • Joey

This is exactly what your diehard fans have been waiting for Dave, for you to turn into another version of Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys! The fans want authentic rock. Give the people what they want!

      • harley quinn

Oh come on now. Michael’s copy was a little misleading. At no point in this process did I get the idea that Max Martin was a “dream collaborator” or that the Ryan Tedder thing will even come to pass. There was little talk of the Claude Kelly sessions which were described as very rock centric and uptempo , and nothing was mentioned of the Sam Hollander collabs, which were also described as uptempo numbers with more spit and vinegar than the last album. I’m not sure if that stuff was left on the cutting room floor, or if Slezak was more interested in the other collaborations, or whatever. But the notion that Cook is trying to be Britney Spears is ludicrous and really grasping at straws. All that said, I hope David fights to include as many band cowrites as possible on the next album. While I’m stoked to see what he’s come up with in general, I think the stuff that harkens back to his roots in KC and Tulsa is really where he shines.

Helena: I doubt you have any interest at all in David Cook from the sounds of what you’ve been posting here. He trying for 40 songs to choose from & it doesn’t mean any of artists he collaborated with will land up on his sophomore album nor that he would record anything he isn’t happy with. Your stating that next he’ll do a tapeze act on AMAs???? David Cook is a class act & doesn’t perform doing gimmicks & would never look like a fool like other people, who I won’t mention, on the AMAs. He is comfortable in his own skin and stays true to himself. He’ll fight for the songs he wants on his album and you can bet that his final version of a song will have his own stamp on it.

What happened to the Steven Van Zandt collaboration? It was reported on David’s official website that they were seen coming out of a NYC recording studio. Why isn’t David talking about that? He’s always mentioning what good friends he and “Stevie” are! Little Steven isn’t one of today’s hitmakers (thank GOD), but he CAN write a song that will stand the test of time. He’s not going to write an insipid pop song that will be a hit today but forgotten in 5 years, or write a song that will be an embarrassment for David to sing 10 years from now. What a way to treat such a good friend, by ignoring them!

    • sherlholmes

      Alicia
At the time of this interview David had not yet written with Steven, so I really don’t believe that this was a snub. He met with Stevie a day or so late during this same trip to NYC. I’m sure it was pretty Hush Hush. Who knows if the label was even aware of his plans to write with Stevie. Not sure if they would back it.

      • Alicia

How do you know when the interview was done vs. the recording session? There were no tweets or statements by David to support what you’re saying.

      • Alicia

I just checked David’s tweets. David arrived in NY on Friday, Jan. 22, wrote with Steven on the 23nd, hung out with Ryan Star on the 24th, so the interview would have had to have been done after the collaboration with Steven. Nice try!

  • sherlholmes

    Helena,
Methinks that you are a classic concern-troll disguised as a Cook Fan. Adam fan perchance?

    • Helena

I may as well be an Adam fan. Looks like Dave is going in the same direction and may become as big a joke. What happened to the Idol rocker-now he wants to be Britney? I had high hopes for this guy but looks like he is turning out to be all about the fame and money.

      • Kristyn

You are really annoying. I doubt he is concerned with losing you as a fan. you hardly seem to be one anyway. Isn’t it a bit hyperbolic to say that one pop collaborator equals new Britney Spears?

      • Laura

LMAO First you claim that you don’t like the pop route Cook is going and you’re losing interest, but you proceed to post a ton of “concerned” comments.

    • Vickie

I’m sorry, I didn’t know you could only be the fan of one singer. Hmmmmmmm. Let me see, who must I choose of the many singers I currently like. Not sure why you can’t like both David Cook and Adam Lambert. You may find this hard to believe, but some people enjoy many different types of music….. Stupid comment!!!!

  • Alicia

I doubt David does anything his management and label aren’t aware of. And perhaps the interview wasn’t done before the recording session, but Mr. Van Zandt has a schedule to keep, and their collaboration would have been discussed between them long before the trip. Sorry, I’m not buying it!

    • Kristyn

There is no record that they even collaborated! From everything we have heard, they haven’t and just hang out when David is in New York! My God, is it that big a deal?

      • Alicia

They were spotted coming out of a NYC recording studio. What else would they be doing there but working on a track together?

  • Bob Davy

Awesome interview dude. Cook is quite articulate, interesting guy.

  • Trisha

David Cook is such a great interview! Thank you for asking questions about the music. Excited about the next album.

  • bth

Sounds great. “With Me Empty” is a very interesting title and I’m stoked that he has co-written it with his band. The only past co-writes with his band members (Neal and/or Andy) that we’ve heard is Anodyne and Kiss on the Neck. Since I freaking love both of those songs, I can’t wait to hear what they written together.

The Imogen Heap all vocals (no instruments) possibility is very intriguing. I hope he tries for it just because I think he’s got the pipes (as well as two other talented vocalists in his band) who could help him pull that off.

Not too psyched about Ryan Tedder, but Max Martin could be promising. I know he’s worked a lot with Pink and I adore her too.

  • Ashley

    I love this guy!
