'Sonic the Hedgehog 4,' a Genesis-style throwback

Attention, old-skool Sonic fans: Sega has revealed that its long-discussed Project Needlemouse will be Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1. The game will be available as a download this summer for Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii. Exciting!

The game is a throw-back to a Genesis-era Sonic, according to Sega’s interview with Gamespot, and will pick up after Sonic and Knuckles.

On the one hand, I am a huge sucker for Genesis-era anything: I was talking about Ecco the Dolphin just yesterday. (Really!) On the other hand, the Sonic franchise has produced some real stinkers in recent years. The trailer on the official site (warning: makes noise) is encouraging, but I’m still a little wary.

And you, PopWatchers? Have you been eagerly awaiting Sonic’s return to greatness?

Even Sonic’s stinkers over the last decade have had moments of brilliance (remember how exciting that first level of Sonic Adventure was?). Here’s hoping they stick with what actually works on this one and weed out the stuff that really, really doesn’t! (Werehog anyone?)

its the only way to do a good sonic game. the ds versions were excellent because they obeyed the sonic rules.

This is great news! I can’t believe its actually Sonic 4. Been waiting so long for an 2D Sonic like this!

Boy do I miss the Sega Genesis. I used to love to watch my brother play Sonic all the time!!

As a kid, I traded my SNES with a friend for his Sega Genesis just so I could play Sonic 2. Good times.

Lol I don’t have the time to waste on video games these days, but I absolutely loved Sega Genesis. I’m all for Sonic coming back :-)

  • wealthlove

    I love this game

Good God does my man Sonic need a new great game. Yay Sonic.

“Episode 1″ eh? This is a sneaky way to get people to pay $50 for the game over time. The team that made the recent Monkey Island WiiWare “chapters” did the same thing.

Wait…there’s a Monkey Island game on WiiWare? WHY WAS I NOT TOLD?!

    • Nick

@erak: By “episodes”, they mean something like Sonic 3 & Sonic & Knuckes (Two full games that have directly connecting stories). Read the interview on Gamespot.com

The trailers on the site don’t actually show us anything.
But I’ve heard that new Mega Man sequels were good, and this could be good as well.

I am getting it the first day it is available. There have been good 3D sonic games: Adventure 1 and 2 but nothing great or amazing. This one may top them all!

They should make it in stylized 2d much like braid. Not this 3d on 2d crap which looks awkward.

What we’ve been waiting for is the Sonic 2 style physical dynamics of the game to return. The speed, the weight of the character, the feel of the level. It seems like Sega might be missing the point here. Hope not. But PLEASE make his legs spin in a blur, not delayed motion!!!!!!!

Go the New Super Mario Bros WII route. 3d characters with 2d side scrolling. The classic game play is still a blast today. If it is some how 4 player co op it would be even better!

    • Tom

yeah cuz nintendo knows how to do it. the people who make sonic nowadays are lazy…

  • Annette

Omg Sonic you are my one and only!
    Lol 90′s rock! 18 and so 1991!

I just heard about Project Needlemouse on Wednesday night, but that’s what it is? Sonic 4, at long last? Epic. … But why episodes? Man, that ticks me off. If it’s all going to be Sonic 4, then release all episodes as the entire game, like Capcom did MegaMan 9. It’s not Sonic 3 & Knuckles, which were at the same time two different games, yet both of them parts of the same whole. That ticks me off, though if and when I have the money, I suppose I’ll get it.
