EW Exclusive: Nick Cannon on his busy career, his goals for the future, and his life with wife Mariah Carey

Nick Cannon firmly believes in the power of positive thinking. Ask the 29-year-old how his various achievements came about—successful stand-up comic at 15 years old, staff writer for Nickelodeon’s All That and Kenan & Kel at 17, CEO of his own production company Ncredible, chairman of the TeenNick cable network, host of NBC’s hit America’s Got Talent and a daily radio show, and loving husband to Mariah Carey—and he’ll tell you that he willed them to happen by telling the universe what he wanted. “I truly believe in speaking things into existence,” says Cannon. “Not to get all Tony Robbins, but you speak it, and it can definitely happen to you.” Cannon sat down with EW for an exclusive interview on his growing career and his high-profile marriage to superstar Mariah Carey.

On his film career: “They started throwing every movie [at me] and I chose bad. I didn’t understand that you had to be strategic. I was like, ‘A couple million dollars?! I get to shoot a gun?! Let’s go!’”

On his marriage to Mariah: “There were people who were for it and there were more people who were against. You have to ask the question: Is your heart more important than your career? Absolutely. I was like, If I don’t do anything else ever again in the entertainment industry, I’m in love with this woman.”

On his five-year plan: “First and foremost, to have a happy family and have some little Cannons running around. And then career-wise, I feel like I’m in that stage where people are taking me serious as a man right now. I wanna be a billionaire in five years. It can happen! I’m speaking it into existence!”

On raising children in Hollywood: “Me and my wife talk about it all the time. As much as there are private jets and champagne everywhere, I want them to understand that’s not what life is about. I’ve met quite a few grounded people who were born into situations like this. We look at those type of examples. I always admired the Kardashian family. They are normal. They’re a family that really loves each other. Or the Osbournes.”

On Mariah’s pet peeves: “She hates when I’m messy when it has to do with her nice stuff. Like, I can’t throw my jacket on the Marilyn Monroe piano—but I do. She hates that I wear suits. She likes me in, like, Timberlands with the fitted cap and T-shirts.”

    • Ceballos

The socks got my attention too…but he lost me at “I always admired the Kardashians.”

      • paige

you know i still have no idea what the fock a kardashian is!

      • Ambient Lite

Yeah, I have a sneaking suspicion that he doesn’t ACTUALLY know any ‘hollywood families’ personally. He’s only naming off TV families.
Sort of challenges the imagination to think of Mariah as a mother anyway.

        Lucky you, paige.

    • harry

      very true!!!

This is just too easy to poke fun at. NEXT!

  • theBigE

With the Osbournes and Kardashians as role models, how could he fail?

  • whatevs

He actually sounded coherent until he said he admired the Kardashians and the Osbournes.

  • Dave

Ahh, the Kardashians and the Osbournes. Two perfect examples of normalcy.

  • Sandra

I think what he meant by the Kardasians and Osbournes (who he each knows personally)that despite all the craziness and media attention that surrounds them they are very much a family who has genuine love for each other and is there for each other no matter what. If you mess with one of them, you mess with all of them.

  • Lea

woah, out of all the people he uses the biggest famewhore Kardashians as an example. Yes they seem close but that’s not what Nick said. He said life wasn’t bout luxury which is what the Kardashians are all about! Come on, after being with Mariah, the most hardworking selfmade woman in business how can you really respect someone like your ex, Kim Kardashian?? All of them are about money and fame for nothing. They have like no standards. No education, no career, nothing. I do think they are kind people but what they stand for disgust me.

  • Lea

I agree, the Kardashians are the worst role models. They might have normal personalities but they have absolutely NO quality, no substance and it all started with the mom..

But would be nice if Mariah and Nick have kids. They would make great parents I think.

  • vyatte

I L.O.V.E. Dis guys he’s so funni I listen to his show everyday and I watch wild out an I watched him on nick as a kid guess m

  • Jada

If you’re going to use the Kardashians or Osbournes as rolemodels I suuure hope that if Mariah and Nick have kids, they don’t let their kids become useless famewhores! That’s why I really respect the Trump family in that aspect..

  • Jada

^no wait, I take back the Osbournes. They aren’t as bad.. I love Nick and Mariah though. Individually and as a couple!

  • Sall

Nick dated that nobody Kim Kardashian right? Sure did a MAAAJOR upgrade with Mariah! I prefer Nick in casual clothing too. His suits always look a bit..pimpish and too big. But he seems to be a great guy.

  • Qtee64

Thank you Sandra, I agree with you. People are so quick to jump on Nick and Mariah for any little thing. I applaud Nick for his business sense and his desire to have a family. He and Mariah aren’t perfect, but who is? I love them as a couple and hope everything goes well for them. I will agree with anyone who says that Mariah’s age will play a large part in whether or not they have kids if they wait too long. Hopefully, they will have one within the year. I think it would be a beautiful child.
