'The Lost Symbol,' 'Enchanted 2,' and 'Fast and Furious 5': Which sequel has you psyched?

Tags: , Movies

Movie-sequelsImage Credit: Hanks: Zade Rosenthal; Adams: Barry Wetcher; Diesel: Jaimie TruebloodGet ready for some serious déjà vu at the movies. Studios just announced sequels to three major hit franchises: The Da Vinci Code, Enchanted, and Fast and Furious. But which one are you most excited about? Let’s go through the pros and cons of each:

The Lost Symbol
Pro:
The book sold a million copies in its first day.
Con: No, hang on a sec. A MILLION COPIES. Think about it. That’s nuts. But sadly, EW’s Thom Geier gave the book a C+ review. Unless the movie can do better, Symbol might get lost at the box office.

Fast and Furious 5
Pro: Talk about momentum, the fourth F&F was the series’ biggest hit yet, racing to a $343 million haul worldwide.
Con: Can the patented F&F formula — car chases, hot bodies (the automotive kind), and hot bodies (the non-automotive kind) — really hold up for five movies, or are moviegoers ready to shift gears?

Enchanted 2
Pro: Amy Adams‘ star has only risen since she got her big break as Enchanted‘s oblivious princess.
Con: Now that Gisele has learned the ropes of the real world in the first movie, what’s left for her in a sequel? Dealing with the recession? Traveling back to fairytale land? Trying to break into the biz in L.A.?

Personally, my vote goes to F&F5 — I’m a sucker for goofy action movies that don’t pretend to be anything else. But I’m sure more than a few of you out there disagree. So take our poll and fire away in the comments!

Remember when movies were original creations and not adaptations, re-makes/boots and sequels? Good times.

    • Marten

      No.

    • Momo

Marten beat me to the punch. I was going to say “no,” too, because most movies are based on something. Even everyone’s beloved “Gone with the Wind” was actually based on a book. Hard to believe, I know.

No I’m not 100 years old. Any younger than that and you’d be writing to your relatives asking them why The Maltese Falcon, amongst others, needed a third filmed version when Hollywood had only, effectively been making talking pictures for 14 years.

Where is the “none” option in the poll? The ‘Lost Symbol’ was the weakest of the 3 books. And the movies are always worse than books (please, switch Hanks with Eric Bana). ‘Fast & Furious’ should have stopped at 2. ‘Enchanted’ was fun, but was fluff. How can they expand on a thin story line?

  • Shannon

The poll above needs an option D: None of the above. that’s my vote.

    • Linda L

      I agree with you

  • Crystal

They shouldn’t do an Enchanted sequel – it’s perfect as-is. That being said, I will totally see the F&F5 a.k.a. Now Everyone’s a Fugitive!

  • Rob

Enchanted could be about her getting married and having a kid. F&F5′s rumored plot has walker and vin being fugitives and them having to run from the police. The Lost Symbol will end up like Angels and Demons a lot of hype but not a lot of money.

  • Maureen

YAY for Enchanted! I love that movie; I’m sure a sequel will be tastefully done. :)

If Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey are back, I would pay to see Enchanted 2. I might rent Lost Symbol or see it on cable. I thought book Lost Symbol was really awful, though, so I’m not going to pay to see it in a theatre.

It’s James Marsden that stole the show and without him it could be a much weaker prospect. Marsden is going to be one of those Ed Harris types who in 20 years time everyone will be “how has he never won an oscar?”. Very underrated and has the whole box full. Comedy, drama, action, singing & dancing. Seriously wasted as Cyclops in X-Men, better than Superman in Superman bores (Returns) and close to the best thing in anything else he’s in.

      No we are not related.

Not into the Dan Brown movies and definately Not into F&F- Id see Enchanted 2 if it looks as good as the first one. Dont know how itd work besides having a kid. but they should probably reverse the formula- have the kid travel to the animated world and Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey follow the kid there and Dempsey’s character be the fish out of water..

    • gigi

Paige…you totally stole my storyline! If our great minds were thinking the samething then hopefully Disney has the same story in mind.

      • paige

I hope so! it screams “sequel” but I think it can work- especially if they have the same actors, writers and composers attached.

    • Ceballos

…if I’m following your storyline correctly, would most of the movie then be animated?

If so, I’d imagine that it’d be easier to get Adams, Dempsey and the rest of the cast on board if the bulk of their work would be voiceover stuff.

      • paige

yes it would be as much animated as the original was live action…

      • Cherise

I loved the first Enchanted and the only thing I could see happening that could live up to my expectations would be kind of what you described. But I was thinking more along the lines of the little girl (Morgan) from the first one going to Gisele’s world, etc. Or maybe Morgan’s mom returns and wants her back…I don’t know…it would have to be something that breaks the two up, so they have to find their way back to each other…something like that. Hopefully they don’t take away the beauty and creativity of the first one though. That’s all I would care about.

    • Linda L

Although I don’t think it needs a sequel, your idea is pretty good.

  • Shannon

None wasn’t an option in the poll. Blah to all of them.

  • ObiHave

What? No “None of the Above”choice.

  • Everton Carter

In a perverse way the Fast and Furious is the most likely to thrive. Like the guy said they are dumb thrill givers and make no attempt whatsoever to pretend otherwise. Not too many people cared about the Diesel-less 2 and 3 but it seems to “new model, original parts” (or whatever) hook worked a treat. If anything you could expect part 5 to make significantly more than the others.

Enchanted was a really fun film, especially for kids, but it is one of those films that seems to have USE ONCE ONLY stamped all over it. If they make an effort, really make an effort it’s the only one that may actually be GOOD as opposed to just watchable or pure garbage.

  • llevinso

Am I the only one that didn’t even realize the Fast and Furious movies already had 4 installments? UGH!! I saw the first and I was done with it. Thank god I didn’t waste any money on three others and I don’t plan on paying to see a 5th either!

  • brookyl

Another Fast and Furious…really?? That’s just sad.

  • Tom

The first two adaptations stunk, why not make “The Lost Symbol” the third?

  • Adwina Lambert

Let me have a role in Enchanted as the Evil Queen’s Evil Princess so I can get all the cute princes!! Tee-hee!
