Frances Reid of 'Days of our Lives': Remembering the soap treasure who played Alice Horton

Frances Reid, who played Days of Our Lives loving matriarch Alice Horton for more than 40 years, passed away yesterday at the age of 95. She hasn’t had a beefy storyline for some time, but she made appearances on the show up until 2007, and just knowing that she was somewhere, even off-camera, with a dish of donuts and wise word of advice, made Salem feel like home. Of course, Salem hasn’t felt like the old Salem for quite a while now (I forgave them for The Island and even the serial killer stories, but John and Marlena’s exit early last year was the last straw), and with many people sounding the death knell for the whole daytime drama genre, it’s all-the-more sad to see this Lifetime Achievement Emmy-winning soap opera treasure — who also had early-career stints on As the World Turns and The Edge of Night — leave us. At least we can look forward to what had better be a heartfelt tribute on Days that brings together Julie, Maggie, Jennifer, Hope, and all the other remaining Hortons to say goodbye to our beloved Gran.

Man, I always wanted some of those doughnuts growing up and my name on an ornament on the Horton tree.
    RIP Frances Reid “Alice Horton”

      Me too!!

Thoughts and prayers to Ms. Reid’s family and the Days cast! She will be missed.

        she’ll be missed

The Horton’s were my adopted family when I moved across country away from my birth family. I spent many Christmases with Mrs. H and the family, she felt like my own grandma. We knew it was coming but she will be missed. I really hope that EW.com will alert us to any tribute episode(s). I gave up on DOOL a couple of years ago, but would love to see how they honor her. I hope they don’t cheap out. Get as many of the old gang together as you can for one last glorious blowout down memory lane.

Say Hi to Tom for me, Alice.

    • Pat Driver

I adopted their tradition of the names on Christmas ornaments. We painted them on ourselves, and any new visitor was given one to personalize and hang.

    • nancy

I also grew up watching dool and wanted a ornament. When I got married the tradition was started of eveyone having their own ornament. Good bye grandma you will be sadly missed. Thanks for the memories.

My heart is heavey,I have wondering when we would hear news of her death,I am a grandma, great grandma, and Alice was one of my family, words can not be said, how much we all will miss her,and Micky just dieing last week.what will happen next? Barb Franz

Rip Gran Horton! I too wanted my name on an ornament on the Horton tree.

This is a sad day for soaps because she was the heart and soul of Days and with less frequent appearances it became painfully obvious this show forgot what it was supposed to be about. They recently killed off the character of Mickey (the original actor who portrayed him was unable to continue to do so for many years and they were never able to find a suitable replacement). I hope the tribute to her is no where near as rushed and as phony as the one they gave him. At the very least she deserves an entire episode dedicated to her if now a multi episode tribute.

    • Fatima

In all fairness, her declining appearances may have had a lot to do with her health and age too.

      • Lizzie

I agree. This is something many people don’t think about regarding the vets. RIP Frances “Alice Horton, Grams” Reid. You made an impact and won’t be forgotten.

    • mikeman

i happen to know for a fact that the show asked her to come on once a month right up until two months ago, but due to age related health issues she was unable to ever do it.

    • Brett

Yes her last appearance (that I saw) she was extremely frail and could barely speak her one line. She was one of a kind and will be missed!

  • Angry Quinn

As a life long fan of DOOL, I am saddened to hear of Grandma Horton’s (or Mrs. H as Bo Brady calls her) passing.

I do hope DOOL does a proper goodbye to her, and I hope the actors that played Jack, Jennifer, and the rest of the family make it back for the funeral.

  • Johnny

I am saddened to hear about her passing because she truly was the matriarch of the show. Even though she has not been on screen for some time, just knowing that the character was around brought some comfort, especially since the character of Mickey was recently killed off. I hope they give her a proper and deserving memorial that brings back the Horton clan.

  • Tim

Yes. The show had better go all out and give Mrs H the tribute she deserves. Bring back as many of our old favorites as you can for her funeral. (Don’t forget Bill, Laura, Marie and the other Hortons). Even though we hadn’t seen her on screen in a while (I’m assuming because of her health) she will be missed. Everybody wanted her for a grandma (if only to get some of those donuts)

  • Marie-Eve

RIp Frances. You were the heart and soul of Days, for sure. I have been watching the show since I was 9 (I’m almost 32 now) and I grew up with Alice and Tom. I still miss MacDonald carey to this day. Another huge loss. I’m glad she lived such a long, wonderful life. I hope to live to 95 as well. She will be missed.

On a plus side, Days is the only soap to have gone UP in the ratings the last two years, the one daytime success story right now.

I don’t blame them for not using Frances. Last time we saw her, she looked very frail.

They better give her the amazing tribute she deserves.

  • Confused!

As an avid Days of Our Lives watcher and fan since I was the age of 5, this is heartbreaking. She was a woman who always exuded loving and warmth; you could just tell she was a special person in real life. As the moral center of this show for it’s entire 40+ year run, she will be sorely missed. I know that the DOOL of today is not the DOOL of old, but I hope the producers, writers, and actors give her the fitting memorial that this matriarch deserves.

    • Laurin

I agree completely!! I have been watching DOOL for 30+ years and this just breaks my heart. I feel like a member of my family has passed. She is now with her “2 husbands” .. Frances’ husband Philip Bourneuf and Alices’ beloved Tom.

  • Shaun

Very sad, I loved her on ‘Days’. Rest in peace.

  • Marie-Eve

I wanted to add that, while I do love days now, I do miss John and Marlena and Jack and jenn every day. Let,s hope they are brought back for Alice’s funeral. Jenn not being at her beloved Gram,s funeral would be a total insult.

The saddest thing is there will never be another person like Frances. They don’t make them like her these days.

  • Stacia Wilson

Francis Reid will always be remembered to us as Mrs H. My condolences goes out to her family and friends including the Days of Our Lives cast from 1965 until present. We love you Mrs H and you will surely be missed. May you rest in peace.

  • orville

Oh, how sad. I got hooked on Days during my college days, but I too gave it up a couple of years ago. Please keep us updated on when a possible tribute show will be aired. She was such a lovely person. Everyone’s grandma.

    • Sue1

I got hooked in college as well, and continued through 2 kids (who both recognized that iconic theme as infants) and the joy of VCRs. Eventually I lost interest, but the image of Mrs H, the perennial smiling Grandma, still endures.
      RIP, Frances Reid.

  • leigha

I am so sad to hear that Frances has passed away. I always loved seeing her on the show. She will be missed. I have been watching Days since 1992 and even though she wasn’t on it anymore you knew she was there in spirit. RIP Frances

  • Mike J

“Days” is hanging by a thread. Even though “Gran” wasn’t able to make appearances, Reid’s death does seem to represent the cutting of that thread. Let “Days” die with the dignity that this beloved actress did.

  • pfitz

Truly the end of an era. Days’ fans were blessed that she worked on the show well into her nineties! I hope the writers and producers give the actress and her character a worthy send-off.

  • Andrea

Why would days die when they have had their best ratings in years? Have you even been reading the mags? Days is the lone soap actually doing great.

On a related note, I’m very sad about Frances. She hasn’t been on the show the last two years but her spirit always lived on.

I hope she gets a big funeral with lots of flashbacks.

She deserves the best tribute there was because Frances and Mrs. H were simply the best.

I’m having a doughnut in her honor.
