Michel Gondry talks directing Seth Rogen in 'The Green Hornet': 'They let me do a lot of crazy things'

rogen-gondryImage Credit: Michael Buckner/Getty Images The Green Hornet, due in theaters this December, will not be your average comic-book movie. I can say that with confidence despite never having seen a single frame for two reasons: One, it stars Seth Rogen, who is many things but surely not a generic action star. Two, it’s being directed by Michel Gondry, the one-of-a-kind French auteur behind head trips like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Science of Sleep. “It’s the first time I did such a big project, which is a very important movie for Sony,” Gondry, who’s just moved on to the editing stage after completing shooting, tells EW. “I know the pressure on me to deliver. But on the other hand, it seems that they let me do a lot of crazy things.”

Such as? “I have to be careful of the words I use, because if the studio reads my comments and finds words that could alienate the broad audience, they will kill me,” Gondry jokes. “We had such a good relationship with Seth Rogen and [producer] Neal Moritz that it went well. There was no tension. They encouraged me to be myself, and encouraged Seth to be himself. I think we made a good team.” He adds, “There are a lot of explosions and stuff, which was not my specialty. On the other hand, the way the action unfolds is sort of geometrical…The main villain is played by Christoph Waltz, who did an amazing performance. I think it took a very special direction.”

I can’t wait to see how that direction, not to mention the rest of the movie, turns out. How about you? Anyone as psyched for The Green Hornet as I am?

I admit, I’m very curious to see how this movie turns out.

      This looks good

“The main villain is played by Christoph Waltz…”

Ok, you got me. (Although, now I’m a bit worried about Waltz potentially getting stuck playing the stock Euro-bad guy in action movies for the next few years.)

    • =8)

Gary Oldman, Ralph Fiennes, Tim Roth, Alan Rickman..not a bad thing when the Euro’s play bad guys…

      • Ceballos

Absolutely true, and all those guys did their thing splendidly…I’m just saying, they can do SO much more.

Don’t worry about Waltz, he will not play just villains, he will continue to analyze them. :-) I am looking forward to Waltz’s part in Cronenberg’s “The Talking Cure”. Waltz will play FREUD (the developer of Psychoanalysis). Nobody but Waltz can play this as excellent. Did you know this: In 2006 Waltz made a Sigmund Freud audiobook. You can see it here: http://www.amazon.de/H%C3%B6redition-Moses-Michelangelo-Sigmund-Freud/dp/3899408454/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1265337271&sr=8-2-spell

Honestly, I am much more excited now then I was before. Because how boring would it have been if The Green Hornet was just another average Daredevil comic book film failure? The last an audience needs is another generic Electra film to reassure everyone that comic book movies are stupid. I love that there are directors out there who are interested in taking comic book based story lines and adapting them into art films instead of just popcorn flicks. But of course I prefer Ang Lee’s Hulk over that other crap that came out with Ed Norton that they tried to pass off as good cinema.

Jason Statham and Jet Li directed by John Woo would have been an awesome version of the GREEN HORNET. I bet you think Nathan Lane as the star of SGT. ROCK AND PANSY COMPANY would be great film making.

The Green Hornet is too much of an unknown character for today’s audience.
Seth Rogen has worn his welcome out already.

Seth isn’t THAT funny (he was funnier when fatter I hate to say) and this movie will blow. When studios pick vague comic book characters (the Spirit, the Phantom, this) almost always sucks.

The Green Hornet has a large following becausae of the tv version starring Bruce Lee. There will be a lot of curiosity, but that won’t translate into big boxoffice. The movie will do well over 100 million, but will have a tough time doing much more than that.

Although i enjoy a lot of them, it’s not really the kind of film that i get ‘excited’ about but, with Michel at the helm, i’m pretty intrigued by it all.

I know nothing of The Green Hornet, at all, but when you think of some of the excellent comic-based movies that have been & then think of Michel’s previous works… this could, at least, be the most impressive-looking of all those films of this genre and pretty spectacular at that.

I like Seth Rogen a lot too. When he’s on form, he’s a great watch. I have no idea what to expect from his performance in this movie. That, in itself, intrigues me.

Also, I was just watching ‘Eternal Sunshine…’ earlier today, actually. That film makes me think it’s erasing MY memory, it’s that trippy!!

  • hc

How much money did they give to Gondry to play with for this movie?

  • kelsey

Hell, yeah! I have been excited for this movie since day 1. I’m a fan of Seth Rogen and knowing that this movie will come out after my first full year of grad school is so thrilling! There have been movies of his, like Pineapple Express, that I wouldn’t have seen if he hadn’t been in them, and I’m always glad that I did. I am so there for Gree Hornet.

I love SEth, he is so funny!

I have my dreaded fears that this will be a comedy,”The Green Hornet” was never a comedy as a radio show[1936-1952],as two movie serials[1940-1941],as a T.V.Series[1966-1967],as a short film[2006],or as a Fan Web Series[2010],let’s hope Seth Rogen and company keep it that way, let’s pray and hope for it!”The Green Hornet” in it’s original form and format has always been a serious action crime drama, please don’t destroy it,ruin it,and make a flop, failure, dud, out of it!This is not supposed to be another Seth Rogen goofy, juvenile, dumb, silly, comedy,I hope Sony and the GHI[GREEN HORNET INCORPORATED],get the message,we do not want a disaster! While a little humor is ok in all the right places, please don’t overdue it!

  • Steve the Dude

This movie is garbage. You need a classical Hollywood leading man to play the Green Hornet not a hideous , overrated, comedian.

To direct this you needed a really good action director. Not a overrated low budget filmmaker.

Seth Rogen and Michel Gondry are hacks. This film is *not* what the fans wanted. Sony and GHI are scum for giving this to Seth Rogen and Michel Gondy and not real film artists.

  • professor fate

This has bomb written all over it, an actor who has never been in an action film linked with a director (the second one for the project) who has never done an action film (“explosions and stuff which are not my specialty” good god) adds up to a disaster in the making. I think we’re talking a bomb on the order of the Spirit here.

You would have to be gay to go see this crap.
