As reported, the now-technology savvy Punxsutawney Phil has seen his shadow this year. Sigh. You know what that means: Six more weeks of winter.
Now, I’ve been yearning for summer since I fell in a puddle of slush months ago. (I figured if I ran over it really fast, I’d just float across the puddle’s surface. That’s physically possible, right?) So, predictably, I find this news to be a great disappointment. But I’m going to try to stay positive and embrace the cold days to come this year. (I say this now, as I sit in my warm, heated office. I’ll probably change my mind as soon as the wind rips my face off when I leave.)
And how can I do this? Why, by watching films about other folks forced to face the wretched winter. Hey, misery loves company, right? A selection of non-Groundhog Day options: Fargo, The Shining, and, of course, The Day After Tomorrow. (At least I know I can always find solace in the New York Public Library!)
What about you, PopWatchers? What is your favorite movie about the misery of winter?

I like 30 days of night, because winter scares me, so I figure I might as well go all the way. I feel like evil vampires are a metaphor for winter: I just haven’t fleshed out that theory yet.
A Simple Plan was pretty awesome.
And, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation! Ah the misery of family togetherness at holiday time..
Not necessarily my favorite, but the Ice Storm is great
Phil might have seen his shadow but every other Groundhog that has been nationalized didn’t…we’ll see which one is right. Phil’s reputation is on the line! LOL
I think if we end up with only 6 more weeks of winter, we will all be very happy people.
My favourite film to watch in the winter is, naturally, Lawrence of Arabia.
In the heat of summer, I recommend Dr. Zhvaigo.
To watch them the other way is just masochism.
eversince i like watching war movies with winter themes… well, those are hart’s war and band of brothers
Misery is a good, cold-weather movie.
