The 'Ugly Betty' cast: What are YOUR ideas for what they should do next?

First things first: May ABC’s darling comedy Ugly Betty rest in peace. When it signs off at the end of this television season, Betty will have had four up-and-down-and-then-back-up seasons on television. And not for nothing, the show undoubtedly features one of the most talented casts out there, including America Fererra (at left, in Betty’s original iteration in the show’s pilot episode), Eric Mabius, Vanessa Williams, Judith Light, Becki Newton, Michael Urie, and others.

The Hollywood Reporter ran a story today, citing the hot commodity that are these now-free-to-join-pilot-season Ugly Betty actors. Which definitely piqued my interest: What should this cast do next?

Is there a place for Becki Newton’s comedic chops, possibly, on CBS’ hit The Big Bang Theory as a foe to Kaley Cuoco’s Penny? Could she possibly parlay her Betty stint into a What Not to Wear-esque hosting gig on a fashion show? What about Eric Mabius? What kind of a show should he join—or what kind of new show should he headline? Could he go dark and sexy with a turn on True Blood? Will Judith Light head into the world of Lifetime and Hallmark movies? Or what are the possibilities for her? Is America Fererra (who supposedly wants to focus on her film career) too big for television now?

This is where you come in, PopWatchers: Where should these actors go? What should they do? Are there television shows out there that are screaming for Michael Urie and Mark Indelicato’s acting talent? Does Vanessa Williams’ spot-on bitchery belong in the Gossip Girl universe by chance? Tell me in the comments below! And remember: No suggestion is too crazy. Think big! Like Betty big!

Weekend Box Office Poll: Are you going to the 'Edge of Darkness'?

Filed under: Movies and tagged: , , ,

Could this weekend be lucky No. 7 at the box office for James Cameron’s Avatar? Possibly, as it seems that the masterpiece could yet again top the weekend’s box office. But for the first time since it premiered, the flick has a formidable foe in Mel Gibson’s Edge of Darkness. EW’s box office guru Nicole Sperling predicts that the two will battle but that ultimately Avatar will prevail over Darkness. Sperling also sees When in Rome, Legion, and The Tooth Fairy tangled in the $6-8 million range and battling for spots three through five.

But, predictions, shmerdictions: What are you going to see? That’s what I wanna know! Please vote in our totally informal, weekly EW Weekend Box Office Poll below. Oh wait, what you’re planning to hit the theaters for isn’t one of the five choices in the poll and talked about above? Choose the last selection of “Something else!” and then tell us about what you’re going to see in the comment section below. I wanna hear from you! Thanks for playing!

'Models of the Runway': Should Megan have spoken?

Allow me to introduce myself: I am the only person who’s seen every single episode of Models of the Runway. Please prove me wrong in the comments. Anyway, scandale! on last night’s Project Runway: Jesse/Ping’s model, Megan, dared to open her mouth. Megan tattled on Ping for not even glancing her way let alone fitting her for the pair’s “Look For Less,” a drab skirt and top that I was sure had been pulled out of the “formalwear: kind of” pile I had in my closet during seventh grade. On Models of the Runway, the models, especially Cerri the feisty Dubliner, harped on Megan for her gross display of the ability to speak, but later on, Jesse ended up thanking Megan for her loyalty and choosing her again. Find out who went home — and which designers chose which models — after the jump. READ FULL STORY »

'Bones' recap: To love!

Filed under: Bones, Television and tagged: , ,

Raise your glasses, Bones fans. Temperance Brennan now believes in love. Or, at least Booth’s premise that love could come first between a recovering alcoholic and a former prostitute-turned-elementary school teacher, and then the chemical reaction. We’ll get to the case — a murdered gay dentist/football player — in a minute. Let’s talk about Brennan’s revelation first.

I’m not sure why the show insists upon making its point in such extreme ways — last week, that Brennan can value Booth’s feelings over the truth (about the lone gunman theory!); this week, that if you believe love conquers all, it means you don’t worry when your younger brother tells you he wants to marry a girl he’s known for a month who is also a former high-priced call girl. I don’t actually think it’s that awful that Booth ran a background check on Padme Dalaj (guest star Dilshad Vadsaria). I’d kinda love a background check on my dates, frankly. Should he have assumed that Padme and Jared hadn’t discussed her past? No. Apparently, that’s something you tell someone within the first month of meeting him. I’m not saying call girls don’t deserve a happily ever after. I’m just saying that you can’t blame someone for being concerned when things are moving that quickly. READ FULL STORY »

'Mass Effect 2': Isn't it romantic?

Filed under: Videogames and tagged: ,

Mass Effect 2‘s big draw might be its thrillingly customizable play or its narrative and emotional depth. But its major buzz comes from its rah-rah-rah-romance. Well, “romance” — non-playable PG-13 heavy breathing that you can only see through specific choices in the game isn’t quite the stuff of Valentines odes.

The stories make sense, the sexytimes scenes themselves are pretty tame — and sometimes even kind of sweet. But man: talk about the uncanny valley. Game developers have perfected explosions, weapons, cars, sports — and yet this kiss (skip to 5:40) is about the creepiest thing I have ever seen. (Yes, that’s Chuck‘s Yvonne Strahovski.)

Are you loving Mass Effect 2, PopWatchers? What does your Commander Shepard look like?

'Survivor: Heroes Vs. Villains': Courtney says 'I feel like I'm playing with the big dogs here and I'm wrapped in bacon'

I should hate Courtney Yates. I mean, really hate her. She shows up to play Survivor, aggressively goes out of her way to make no moves whatsoever, and then, when she somehow, someway makes it to the finals in China, makes zero effort to win. And then when invited back for Fans Vs. Favorites, says, “No thanks, not interested.” All that could be perceived as a slap in the face to the thousands of people who would do anything to play this game. But I can’t hate Courtney. In fact, I find her fascinating. Maybe it’s because I appreciate seeing someone on TV actually more emaciated than yours truly. Maybe it’s because she can show up on the set of Survivor Talk and start chugging disgusting smoothie concoctions just for the hell of it — no questions asked. But I think it’s something else. I think it is the fact that Courtney has no misconceptions about herself in the least. She is refreshingly honest and candid, not just about other people she is playing against, but about what see sees in the mirror as well.  [Courtney on who is the most overrated person in Heroes Vs. Villains, plus exclusive on location video after the jump.] READ FULL STORY »

'The Real Housewives of Orange County' Recap: Lynne melts down

Filed under: Reality TV and tagged: , ,

And I mean that literally. Poor Lynne had too much to drink and she started wailing at the table about the struggles of parenting teens and you could see the threads snapping from her recent facelift. It was not a good look for her, and should be a reminder to us all that there is nothing less becoming than an ugly, drunk cry.

Alexis had decided that it was her God-given mission to mend fences between Gretchen and Tamra. (Some people raise money for Haiti, some build houses for Habitat for Humanity. Whatever your calling, Alexis reminds us all to heed!) So she planned a girls’ cooking lesson at her house. For a while there, a good time was had by all save Vicki, who reminded us that 1 p.m. on a work day is not a good time for her to swill chardonnay with the ladies. Not when there are rows of diamonds to count on her new ring from Don and power point presentations to prepare on the fundamentals of money management. (Oh how I fear that our Vicki believes she is cleverly laying the groundwork to become the next Suze Orman)

Patti LaBelle singing on 'The Mo'Nique Show' last night: She's 65 and fabulous!

Last night, R&B/soul legend Patti “Lady Marmalade” LaBelle appeared on Oscar-hopeful Monique’s talk show, and damn! That lady — who, mind you, is 65 years old! — can still belt with the best of them. “They would cancel this show if you came on here and did not take this microphone,” Mo’Nique said as she intro-ed Patti’s scorching rendition of “You Are My Friend.” Ain’t that the truth.

Beyond just loving all over Patti’s gorgeous pipes, natch, I love that both Mo’Nique and Gabrielle Union stood up and grooved while she was singing. Because it’s like, how can you not when Patti is singing? Also, is anyone shocked that “You Are My Friend” is “Mo’Nique’s song”? I’m not.

'The Vampire Diaries' recap: The episode that knocked our bobby socks off

I’ve been a fan of The Vampire Diaries from the start, but last night was the first time I ended an episode saying “Buffy it out!” aloud and thinking that I should really email the friends I went to a Buffy convention with (the series had just ended!) to make sure they were watching. I don’t bring up the “B word” to start a debate — they’ve got totally different plots and writing styles. But just to say that we’ve officially gotten past the love triangle arc, more characters are aware of what’s going on in the town, new vampires/enemies have been introduced, people who don’t actually like each other are or will be forced to work together (always fun), and everyone (even Aunt Jenna!) has a worthy storyline.

My favorite moments in this show are when the Salvatore brothers present a united front, as they did when Mysterious Hoodie Vamp (MHV), Noah, decided to stalk Elena because it was fun — cut to Damon smirking in agreement — and she looked like Katherine. Having not read the books, I don’t know if the show is just playing this out accordingly, but in my mind, Elena hitting Noah with her car and him terrorizing her with phone calls are nods to Kevin Williamson’s I Know What You Did Last Summer and Scream. The phone calls were only a quarter as a frightening as the one that opens the latter, but since that Drew Barrymore scene can make me wet myself just thinking about it, that’s still pretty darn scary. EW Video Exclusive: 'Iron Man' director Jon Favreau talks about appearing on 'Star Wars: The Clone Wars'

Warning: geek worlds colliding! During tonight’s new episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars (airing 9:00 p.m. on Cartoon Network), Iron Man director Jon Favreau will be voicing the leader of the Mandalorian warriors, Pre Vizsla. Favreau actually got the gig while finishing his post-production work on the first Iron Man. The filmmaker was collaborating with Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound at Lucasfilm’s Skywalker Ranch when he crossed paths with Clone Wars supervising director Dave Filoni. Favreau mentioned his interest in voicing a character, and faster than Han Solo’s Greedo-shooting blaster, the Iron Man filmmaker became a part of the Star Wars universe.

Below, check out EW.com’s exclusive behind-the-scene video of Favreau’s involvement with The Clone Wars: READ FULL STORY »
