'Bones' returns with 'X-Files' guest star, and viewer agita

Filed under: Bones, Television and tagged: , ,

After a month’s absence that either made the heart grow fonder or made you realize that you could live without it (which was it for you?), Bones returns tonight at 8 p.m. ET with a new episode titled “The X in the File.” Even though I’m not an X-Files fanatic, and I apologize if my recap tomorrow will suffer for it, I’m kinda shocked that it took Bones five seasons to get there — back in the pilot, Booth made the Mulder and Scully comparison. But back to 2010: Booth and Brennan (spoiler alert) travel to Nevada to investigate human remains (those of a local UFO fanatic) with extraterrestrial attributes. Dean Haglund, who played Richard ‘Ringo’ Langly on The X-Files and The Lone Gunmen, guests in the ep. Bonus: We also get Angela and Wendell coming clean about their relationship.

From the looks of this image, I think I’m going to like this colorful episode. But as someone who’s been burned by this show before, I’m always cautiously optimistic. Which is how I felt reading my colleague Michael Ausiello’s latest Bones scoop. I’m cool with Zack coming back for April 8′s 100th episode because we’re flashing back to the first case Booth and Brennan ever worked together. That’s not the problem. It’s exec producer Stephen Nathan telling Ausiello that after that episode, B&B will “reassess and reexamine their relationship” and “be going off on a different trajectory than we have been seeing this season,” and that “it’ll be much more interesting than just consummating the relationship. It’ll stir everyone up a lot more.” That sounds good to me — even if he were to mean that the duo would take a step back (it would give the sexual tension a jolt) — but after the third and fourth season finales, I’m not sure my “good” is the same as the producers’ “good.” Still, Emily Deschanel has assured Ausiello that the relationship changes in a “good way.” She also teased that we’ll be seeing an engagement and a wedding later this season — maybe not from the same characters…

Where do you stand on Bones now?

Site of the day: World's Best Pet

We never turn down the opportunity to cover cute puppies here at PopWatch, so we wanted to alert you to this “world’s best pet” contest connected to the film Mine.

There aren’t that many entrants yet — although Gus here with his shades seems to be a frontrunner — so there’s still time to enter your pooches, kitties, and long-shot ferrets.

Mine is a really moving documentary about people who were separated from their pets during Hurricane Katrina. Be warned if you get weepy during those Sarah McLachlan ASPCA ads, this one will tug at your heartstrings.

The film is available on iTunes now and it opens theatrically in New York tomorrow; check out the Mine trailer below. And good luck to Gus and the other competitors.

'Ironclad' trailer looks bloody, good

Filed under: Movies and tagged: ,

Ironclad is going to go medieval on your ass. In a good way! This way-early trailer covers pretty well-worn Middle Ages action, but it looks gory and cool nonetheless, plus it earns bonus points for having Kate Mara swinging a sword along with the dudes:
Between this and the upcoming the Russell Crowe/Ridley Scott Robin Hood, Hollywood chainmail designers are having the best year ever!

Will you be taking Ironclad supplements, PopWatchers?

First Look: Channing Tatum discusses the movie that scalded his privates

Filed under: Movies and tagged: ,

eagle-of-ninthImage Credit: Keith BernsteinBy now you’ve surely heard about Channing Tatum’s scalded penis. In the current issue of Details, Tatum revealed an unfortunate incident that occurred while shooting the upcoming Roman epic movie The Eagle of the Ninth. The actor was filming a scene in the hypothermic waters of Scotland, which were so cold that one of the crew members had to repeatedly pour a mixture of boiling water and river water down Tatum’s suit. Long story short, the assistant forgot to add the cold water one time, thereby drenching Tatum’s nether regions with hot water and sending the actor to the hospital with a “shriveled, burned penis.”

Oh, the things actors will endure for the sake of the film! EW chatted with Tatum last week about the movie in question, The Eagle of the Ninth, which Focus Features will release this fall. “It’s almost like an old western, like The Searchers,” Tatum said, while pointing out that the film’s still very much an epic in the tradition of Gladiator and Braveheart. “Are you going to get big, huge battles and things you’d expect in an epic? Yeah, absolutely. But it’s smarter than just a big epic. It’s more of a personal, relationship story about these two guys that have to go on this journey together.” READ FULL STORY »

'Survivor: Heroes Vs Villains': Randy insists 'This is mine for the taking'

Whoa there, big fella. Calm down just a second. Of course, pretty much all Survivor contestants are confident they are on the path to victory when the game starts. So why should we believe Gabon’s resident grumpasaurus, Randy Bailey, when he says that he’ll win Heroes Vs. Villains? Well, he does have one distinct advantage going for him. No one — and I mean no one — is worried about him in the least. The only time his name really came up in my interviews with the cast right before the game began was when I questioned his mortal enemy Sugar about their current status, and even she didn’t seem very concerned about him. [Why Randy could be in trouble, and exclusive on location video, after the jump.] READ FULL STORY »

Trailer for Roman Polanski's 'The Ghost Writer' released

Filed under: Movies and tagged: ,

The international trailer for Roman Polanski’s latest film, The Ghost Writer, has hit the Internet. Translation: Don’t mind the French subtitles. Ewan McGregor plays a writer helping a former British prime minister (Pierce Brosnan, acting quite the badass) complete his memoir — if what he uncovers doesn’t get him killed. Kim Cattrall appears to have a role that will require her to have zero sex. Fascinating!

One word of advice: If you try to YouTube this trailer, be sure to type in the full title. If you just type “Ghost Writer trailer”, you could end up with the preview for a film directed by Alan Cumming, starring him as a music teacher who takes in and apparently murders a street hustler/writer (David Boreanaz), then passes off his novel as his own. You’re going to click aren’t you?

'Modern Family' recap: How much is that doggie butler hanging out the window?

For you, sirs? It’s free. No, take it. Someone please take the hideous butler dog. Last night’s episode of Modern Family, “Not in My Home,” revolved around household anomalies treasured by one party and reviled by others: Barkley the Dog Butler at Jay and Gloria’s, a nudie pic promoting agribusiness at Phil and Claire’s, and a troubled gardener at Mitchell and Cam’s. As usual, hilarious dialogue abounded but my favorite parts were the sweet bonding moments among the family — you know, when they bitch and moan (to our delight) for nearly half the scene before realizing how alike they sound and how maybe their respective relationships aren’t so bad after all. I loved the heart-to-heart Claire and Mitchell shared over an invigorating beaded comb sheath crafting session at Luke’s birthday party, for example. Anyway, this time, it was Jay and Mitchell who decided to focus on how good they had it with their unlikely spouses. “Just drop it, kid,” Jay told his son. “We’re both with people different from us, and that’s gonna create stuff. But you want different.” Awwww! These stop-and-think moments resonate with me the most, even if we’ve heard them before. But it’s not like you wanna go around quoting THAT all day, so after the jump, I’ve listed some of last night’s best lines. If I missed your favorite, beam it up to the dirty old Internet “like a torpedo” in the comments! READ FULL STORY »

Ricky Gervais on hosting the Golden Globes: 'Anything I think of on the night, I'm going to act on it.'

Good news: The Golden Globes have sprung for a host! Even better news: It’s Ricky Gervais! The British comedian/actor/writer/etc. will emcee the 67th installment of the film-and-TV awards show on Sunday, Jan. 17 (NBC, 8 p.m.) You can check out the latest issue of EW to read our interview with the mastermind behind The Office and Extras — along with our trophy predictions from Dave Karger and Ken Tucker — but for some bonus Q&A action with Gervais, scroll down. We also get the scoop on his new HBO animated series The Ricky Gervais Show.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: The Globes haven’t had a host since 1995. What was your first reaction when they asked you?
RICKY GERVAIS:
I laughed, because I was flattered. And laughing and being flattered was mixed in with “Are they mental? Really? Me?” I thought if there’s one [awards show] I’d ever do, it would be the Globes. It’s a relaxed atmosphere—the fact that it’s more of a party than an awards show is the point. It’s more conducive to what I do. I’m not sure what I do, but whatever I do, they said they’re okay with it…. I [like] a place where people can walk around, there’s drinks at the table—I’m hoping everyone will be drunk. Well, I’m certainly going to be, I don’t want to be the odd one out. There’s nothing more boring than being sober in a room full of drunks. READ FULL STORY »

Kiefer Sutherland in a dress on Letterman: The shoes are all wrong

Last night, 24‘s Kiefer Sutherland appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman and opted for an interesting wardrobe choice: a dress paired with a long-sleeved tee and combat boots. Sutherland admitted that he lost a football bet to a friend and this was his punishment. Or was it ours? Kiefer, if you’re gonna put on a dress, at least give us something pretty to look at! And pair it with some nice shoes! Next time you lose a bet, gimme a call and we’ll head on down to Christian Louboutin for a little shopping trip. It’ll be fun. That would be preferable to last night’s ensemble, which kinda looked like something Winona Ryder wore in Reality Bites. Not good.
