Erica Rhodes: 'Idol' hopeful, 'Barney' veteran, and whip girl

Don’t just call American Idol hopeful Erica Rhodes “the Barney girl turned dominatrix.” This Texan hopeful describes herself as nothing less than “aspiring actress, singer, dancer, model, writer.” Whew. She previously studied broadcast journalism (see her in a student video here) and trained at the Debbie Allen Dance Academy (per the LA Times) and danced with the now-defunct Dallas Desperados. Judge her acting chops for yourself in this music video for Trap Starz Clik’s “Get It Big”.

But Idol fans will want to hear more of her music — her YouTube channel includes this unreleased song “Nothing Left to Lose” (video embedded below). She also sings the track “Thing Called Love” for Doubleback Music. Erica’s MySpace page has the same song.

And after the jump, see a video capturing behind the scenes moments from her Idol audition. In his comprehensive recap of last night, Michael Slezak already called her “Whippi Longstocking” and said her vocal ability was “middling.” (Need reminding of the Barney clips and the jarring use of that whip? Her clip from the show is here.)

PopWatchers, what did you think of Erica’s voice…and her outfit? What would Barney think of that whip?

    Def not top 24 material. She’s a B-/B singer. A- hottie, though.

    Season 8’s first ringer.

    • Sara

What previous season have you forgotten about already?

      • crispy

Not following ya. What are you sayin?

      • crispy

Oh, is this season 9? Hah! Clearly I’m only a casual viewer.

  • Stephanie T.

Oh come on. Mya sings better than that.

  • CMU

That track sounds like you’re listening to it through a tin can with a string tied to it. AWFUL sound mixing.

  • Allie

erica’s voice is okay. nothing special.

  • Steve

The “Whippi Longstocking” moniker made me LOL!

  • brice wilkie

ya not realy u got a bad scence of judjment!

  • Karen

She sounds like several dozen other R & B singers- nothing special- BORING!

  • Karen

Maybe this comment will get some flack but she doesn’t look black, she look possibly hispanic- she sounds ambiguous when she talks- but when she sings, it’s like she’s mimicking your typical R& B singer. FAKE! She sounded like a different person altogether singing her little Barney song.

She’s not black, she’s biracial. I think it makes sense and isn’t unusual that a person with just one black parent might look different from a person with two black parents.

  • mac750

Shes ok but i no i sing wayyyyy BETTER than her

  • Stephanie T.

Karen hit the nail on its head. When she sings Barney, that’s her natural voice but when she sings other artists songs, she tries to mimic the singer therefor she does use her natural voice. If she makes it through to the top 24, Simon will call her on that.

I liked the way she sang the Barney song, quite frankly, but hated the sound of her voice after that. I was actually shocked she went through. Her voice has a very displeasing quality to my ears.

  • claire

i don’t really like her. She has that **tchy thing going on around her, which makes me feel irritated by her. i don’t think she can win though.
