By now, you’ve read the sad news that Ugly Betty‘s current season will be its last. If you want to debate whether ABC should have pulled the plug on the four-year-old show, Michael Ausiello is hosting that debate. Here on PopWatch, we’re accepting the cancellation and moving forward. Exec producer Silvio Horta and ABC president Steve McPherson have confirmed that Betty‘s writers will have time to pen a “satisfying conclusion” and “proper farewell.” So, knowing that they now have less than 10 episodes left, it’s time to seriously ponder that question we’ve all been asking since we first found out that Betty and Daniel coupled up in the original Colombian series:
I don’t want to sway your vote, but I’ll just say that I still think of Daniel as Betty’s older brother, and even though I’ve liked the men who’ve wooed her over the years, I don’t really need any of them to re-enter the picture before the final credits. I am intrigued by this fireman character Mad Men‘s Rich Sommer is set to play in what could be a potentially recurring role. He’s supposed to have the “date from hell” with Betty in an episode this March. The writers could have some fun with that and end the run with Betty realizing that she’s finally found a guy who knows who he is and whose baggage is manageable. That would be nice. But I also think they could end the show with young Betty finally leaving Mode and finding colleagues who truly accept, respect and inspire her. Betty’s a fighter, we get it. But work doesn’t have to be a war. There are tons of magazines in New York. She’s allowed to work for one that matches her interests. We’ll all suspend disbelief and buy that it’s hiring.

rich sommer is such a cutie… he’d be perfect for betty but in the end i wouldnt mind if she were single and she leaves Mode for good! I am not worried about Betty’s storyline– im more worried about Wilhemina’s… Vanessa Williams has been consistently good in this role even though the character hasnt. they need to send her off good… and she needs an Emmy dammit!
I completely agree about Wilhelmina. The writers have been amazing in crafting a character that you don’t want to see win (since she’s usually spiting Betty or the Meades) but who you also hate to see lose! That’s not easy to do. Plus, Williams plays it perfectly and is enormously underrated.

Daniel is winning so far. That would be just too weird.
Detty is on the way whether people like it or not.
Not if they do it right. I think Detty can be done well as long as they have a clear plan. With series-end coming, I think the writers have time to do Detty justice. Considering she was hired based largely on how “unattractive” she was supposed to be to Daniel, having this end with a blossomed Betty and a Daniel who finally sees her appeal could be very sweet and bring the show full circle.
I agree totally. He’s never noticed her before that way, and it would be most fitting for it to end with his eyes opening for the first time to what a true beauty looks like. I would love to see some big event that Daniel has to go to and doesn’t have a date, so Betty offers/is asked to go. She has just gotten her braces off, and Claire Meade takes her to get a dress, and a day at the spa for hair/WAXING, etc. (The dress has to be something that makes her look like she has a neck, preferably red). She walks in like Cinderella at the ball as Lady in Red starts to play and Daniel really sees her for the first time. It would be magic!
Oh yeah, and she discovers the beauty of contacts! Hate those glasses! Anyway, all this would be even sweeter if she has to do a big article for the magazine about Daniel’s life and spends a week shadowing him, and all their crazy times where she saves his ass is done in a little retrospective as they start noticing each other over that week while laughing and reminiscing. Of course they belong together. That’s why they never could really sustain relationships with other people! And Wilhamena needs to get caught doing something and ends up in co-ed prison with Conner…
A lot of people who liked either Gio or Henry lost interest after feeling they were jerked around by having certain expectations built up and then summarily just dropped–not ended just basically DROPPED. So that part of the former audience has largely turned away and probably not noticing various polls taken about Ugly Betty because their relationship with the show became more lackadaisical. So Daniel winning I think mostly reflects that Daniel is still on the show and so his fanbase is more intact.

I’d like to see Willie happy and with Connor. I’d like to see Daniel with Amanda and I’d like to see Betty alone, independent, without braces and wearing clothes that don’t offend my eyes and give me a headache.

Just saw the bit about Rich Sommer. All systems go. I actually voted for Daniel before I read about the fireman, which is a shame, because it sounds perfect for Betty. Date from Hell turns out to be The One, all in time to package it up nice and neat for the finale. Also, I really love Rich Sommer.
They need to bring GIO back – his chemistry with Betty was awesome. Her and Daniel are friends and they shouldn’t try to make it anything more than that.
I stopped watching after Gio left. He had amazing chemistry with Betty, better than everyone else they’ve put her with. I would watch the end of the series if he came back.
