'Pants on the Ground' idea-theft SCANDAL!

In case anyone still cares about “Pants On the Ground,” there is currently a bit of online outrage that Larry Platt may have ripped off the Green Brothers’ “Pockets on the Floor.” Oh no! A different older gentleman once meandered his way through a song with no melody about pulling your pants up! The Green Brothers posted their 1996 almost-hit on YouTube and wrote in the description: “The General’s song have [sic] the same intent, idea and in part the same message. YOU BE THE JUDGE AMERICA!!” Yes, by all means.

    No. I really don’t care.

That music video was kind of hypnotic.

Anyway, it used to be that unknown, no-hit wonders would come out of the woodwork and try to claim credit for songs from, you know, actual talented musicians. Do people really need to be tripping over themselves to take credit for “Pants on the Ground”?

That being said, there’s a two or three-second portion around the :58 second mark that seems like it was directly lifted for “Pants on the Ground.” Other than that, there are no similarites other than there being an older black gentleman lamenting about young people’s sloppy dress. The guy actually kind of reminds me of my grandfather, who used to rag on the way my younger brother dressed when we visited him in New York – except that he didn’t rap. (Now I kinda wish he had rapped.)

    Oh. God. No. More.

Close enough. Let’s see the two old men wrestle for the rights on another reality TV show.

“Ain’t no way in the world, a man’s crotch could be that low.” Ha.

Was this filmed in slo-mo are they just that arthritic?

Nowadays, you have not made it until some accuses you of plagiarism. Harry Potter, Twilight, Pirates of the Caribbean, Avatar, Coldplay, the list goes on and on. It is very possible for people to have the same idea without being aware of the other.

Didn’t work in 1996 and probably won’t be heard in 2010 either. Old folks understand but the young ones aren’t paying attention. Sad…

Not a rip-off. But they both suck.

  • Mari

Eh, maybe. Geriatric rappers are hilarious.

  • Darby

  • Sean
