The basic difference is that 3G is cell phone technology. Anywhere you can get ATT 3G service, you can use the browser. A Wi Fi network is someone’s local wireless internet connection that you can use if you have access to it (like at an airport or your own home). If you get the ipad version that just has a wi fi function, then you’ll only be able to go to itunes or other sites if you can connect to a local wi fi area. If you get the ipad with 3G functionality (and pay the additional service fees), then you can connect where ever there is ATT cell service. Hope that helps…
Can someone help me out: how is wifi capability different from 3G, what more do you get with 3G?
um really?? WIFI is tethered to a (wait for it) WIFI connection, Whereas 3G will let you get online anywhere like a cellphone or IPHONE!!
OMG I can’t wait to own my own Ipad… will starve myself to get there but it will be awesome to be standing in line to buy it on the first day! Yay!
It won’t kill the Kindle unless it comes with the electronic ink and paper feel Kindle has. It’s much easier to read than a computer screen.
We could all point/counter point this thing to death. I’ll be buying one. Why? Because it’s the perfect gadget to take on a vacation with kids. Once Marvel and DC distribute their comics in this form their businesses will skyrocket.
plus, I gave my wife, who is completely tech-illiterate, and iPod Touch 4 week ago and it hasn’t left her side since then. That’s the market the iPad is for, not you tech geeks
really? what else does she carry with her? I’d imagine her cell phone and her laptop if she plans to do any computing. Once she gets the ipad she can add it to the list of things she carries since it won’t be able to replace anything she currently has except of course for her ipod touch.
I still love the fact that iTampon was a trending topic on Twitter yesterday. Also, Mad TV did a sketch a couple years ago with the iPad — which was pretty much a feminine product with a cord and it was “the new cool thing”… yeah, that sounds about right.
Looks awesome, but I still don’t think e-readers come close to the experience of holding a real book in hand. The papery smell, the rustle of pages, opening the cover for the first time…as a bibliophile, I don’t think the true book will ever go the way of the dinosaur. That said, if I had $500 laying around, I would get one just because it’s basically Star Trek come to life.
Just a waste of money if you ask me. It doesn’t replace anything I already own so it’s just another gadget that would have to carry around.
It’s just a giant iphone, sans the ability to make phone calls. If find it interesting that the first peripheral that apple makes for the ipad is a dock with a full sized keyboard. While ipad users are docking their device I’ll be opening my macbook – which happens to actually have more than 64GB of storage space.
I hate to take this position since I’m normally a huge apple fan, I just don’t see the need for a 3rd device. Is the kindle and e-reader that big of a market that it warrants this giant ipod touch? Because I know they aren’t trying to compete with the current tablet PC’s that come with upgradeable storage solutions and full scale operating systems.
I bought a 64gb ipod touch a few weeks ago. I thought I might have regretted not waiting for the ipad. But after using my touch as well as seeing the specs and the prices for the ipad, I’m not regretting a thing. A bigger screen might be a tad easier on the eyes but not for the price of the 64gb version (16gb doesn’t really hold enough itunes content). Plus the ipad doesn’t seem to be a pocket sized device. The touch is much easier to carry around. I also have a kindle which works perfectly fine and doesn’t require monthly usage fees. If one doesn’t have an iphone, touch, ereader or laptop, perhaps it might be worth the investment. But for the price, it is hard to justify getting this device in addition to one of these other devices.
Computer Geeks are acting like Steve Jobs is reading off the tablets of the 10 Commandments! http://hidensneek.com/2010/01/27/ipad-commandments/
I am getting one for the sole purpose of having a superportable lightweight way of surfing the web with a screen that’s larger than the iphone. At a pound and a half, there aren’t many netbooks that are this light. With the amount of crap that I have to haul around every ounce less that I have to carry around helps.
Excellent beat ! I would like to apprentice whilst you amend your web site, how could i subscribe for a blog web site? The account helped me a appropriate deal. I have been a little bit familiar of this your broadcast offered vivid clear idea
