Folks this is about money. The statement from CBS indicates they still have slots for sale. In prior years, when the economy wasn’t as bad, all the slots would be sold by this point.
Corporations and associations have the right to free speech, and they have the right to buy air time during a huge television event. If opposing groups want to air their message, buy some air time.
As for the argument that women are harmed by the advertisement, if a woman is going to make a life/death decision based on Mrs. Tebow’s non-medical advice in a 30 second ad, she should really get a second opinion.
::yawn:: My goodness. All this righteous indignation over a Super Bowl commercial. If it bothers you that much, just go get a beer when it comes on. And get me one while you’re up.
I dont watch CBS except for CSI: Miami once in a while, other than that I dont go there. I watch abc, and NBC. Geez, first its NBC and this stupid late night war and now CBS and this controversial commericial. Im Christian, but I believe women should choose for themselves without pressure from the church.
Do you believe an unborn baby has any right to life?
STFU
A baby? Yes. A fetus? No. Big Difference. And yes, I’m a mother and still pro-choice.
If CBS wants to turn the Super Bowl into political theater, I guess this will be the first Super Bowl I won’t watch. You have a choice! Turn it off.
I have closely observed Tim Tebow for the last four years as he played for Florida and led his life without reproach. He is no way political and one of the nicest, most sincere people you will ever meet. Whatever this is, it will be done with class and dignity. If you don’t like what he has to say,(and I personally likely won’t agree in this case) that’s your right. But it is his right to say it, if the ad was paid for. His story is inspiring. If it offends you, turn it off.
I don’t like beer, but that doesn’t mean those commercials shouldn’t be aired. Its about choice. But as a Gator fan, I’m certainly glad his mother made the choice she did!
He seems like a giant douchbag to me….
ABSOLUTELY. We saw a breast one year LOL. This Tebow ad is dangerous??? Is the WMC going after the politicians who are taking away early mammograms? EVERY women has the right (thanks to Roe v Wade) to decide if she wants to contiune a pregnancy? Why is it that some woman can say no and only because she gives HER moral standards as the reason why, then people like the WMC want to stop her? Talk about a hate crime. When are we going to wake up in America??????
The issue is that CBS has turned down controversial ads in the past, but now sees fit to air this one. You seem confused.
In America, we need to protect free speech, even for groups we may disagree with. I completely support CBS in running the ad, and would support them as well if they decided to run an ad with an opposing view.
I see too many American’s these days willing to give up our Rights.
Ugh! I swear some of you people didn’t finish high school. This is not a free speech issue. It has zero to do with the government restricting people’s rights.
SO what is sooo controversy?! The fact that a PRO CHOICE group doesn’t think the CHOICE of life should be discussed? Or that Pro choice groups are really only pro abortion and just call themselves pro choice to not sound like the like the murder of babies?!
The fact that in the past other controversial ads were turned down and this one wasn’t is part of the issue.
I completely support CBS and the freedom of speech. The choice of life shouldn’t be considered controversial it should be celebrated.
Do you also support free speech for pro-choice groups, or other people you don’t agree with? I think CBS should stick with the policy of not airing political ads during the Super Bowl.
These “women’s groups” really scare me. They almost make it sound like they like abortions and want women to have them. That is frightening. All groups should have an interest in minimizing abortions whenever possible. Are there people out there that really want unborn babies to die?
Yes, there are people that want babies to die. History is full of dictators that do.
So the 13 year old minority girl from the ghetto gets raped by a psycho and is forced to have a child she cannot afford or mentally raise. Since life is so sacred, are you going to be first in line to adopt this child? Or will you leave it in the ghetto to starve, suffer, get no education, live on crack, end up murdering someone and go to jail? Come on, what is it? I don’t see you almighty pro-lifers lining up to adopt these children who are unwanted and sometimes brain damaged from alcoholic/addict mothers! Isn’t life sacred for EVERYONE? Be honest now.
You are right. It’s probably better to kill all the unborn babies. And while we are at it, why don’t we just kill all the poor people to save them from their own suffering…. I can’t believe the rationalizations people use to justify the murder of innocent unborn babies. You should be ashamed of yourself.
Bill…you sound like a complete moron.
No, Bill, there are no women’s groups that want to increase the number of abortions, or force anyone to have one! Pro-choice people would prefer to prevent unwanted pregnancies, but they believe abortions that are necessary should be safe and legal. Based on your later comments, you obviously do not have an open mind on this issue, so you slander people who don’t think exactly as you do. By the way, are you fine with pro-choice ads during the Super Bowl? I don’t think CBS should accept ANY political ads during the Super Bowl. If CBS has not accepted them in the past, now is not the time to start.
I think abortions are necessary in certain situations, but I also think that unborn babies have rights. I don’t believe their rights are as great as the mother’s rights, but I also don’t believe that it is moral to have an abortion out of convenience. What about the pro-choice people out there? Do unborn babies have any rights? If so, how much and who should protect their rights?
As for the Superbowl Ad, I love free speech and the free exchange of ideas. All ideas should be discussed openly and debated.
If there are not any pro women’s groups out there that want to increase the number of abortions, then why are these women’s groups putting up such a fuss about a lady encouraging other women to not have abortions? I would think is this something we could all support.
1. “I think abortions are necessary in certain situations”. On earlier post, someone gave the example of a teenage girl being raped and impregnated as a result of that rape, and you still disagreed with that as a valid reason for an abortion. What would YOU consider necessary enough for an abortion?
2. “If there are not any pro women’s groups out there that want to increase the number of abortions, then why are these women’s groups putting up such a fuss about a lady encouraging other women to not have abortions?” The problem isn’t with the ad itself, it’s with the fact that CBS has turned down ads from pro-choice groups, yet they choose to air this one. That shows clear bias on CBS’ part, and it’s the hypocrisy behind it that’s getting everyone riled up.
Do you support abstinence only programs as the only form of sex education allowed in schools? Do you support universal healthcare that includes prenatal care for expectant mothers? Are you ok with an increase in taxes to pay for the birth and postpartum care for these women and children? Do you donate money to overflowing orphanages and social services that are supposed to protect children in foster care?
People preach all the time about being pro-life and yet those same people refuse to take steps necessary to prevent pregnancy from the start and they don’t support universal healthcare even though 18,000 people die a year from lack of proper care and they support devastating wars that kill hundreds of thousands of babies, children, and innocents.
Exactly! Thank you so much for saying that. If you’re really pro-life, then stop yammering on and on about the sacred fetus and do something that will actually help the mother and prevent unwanted pregancies to begin with. Preach, sister.
Amen sister!
Game…set…match. This is exactly the problem I have with pro-lifers: they’re more idealistic than pragmatic. They preach about the sacredness of life, but only do so until the baby is born. After that, the newborn and its mother are on their own. And don’t even get started on how pro-lifers romanticize adoption, which isn’t always full proof (especially for minority children).
I’m not the biggest fan of abortion, but I’d rather let a woman get that procedure done if they don’t have the means to properly take care of the child.
Good for CBS. I don’t watch football but I will next month.
Riiiiight
I have said it many times before, and I will continue to say it every time this group shows up in the news.
Focus on Your OWN DAMN Family. Leave everybody else’s to themselves.
If they can afford the ad, let ‘em run it. I personally think that money could go be put to better use like maybe Haiti where people young and old are dying. I don’t see what the problem is. I don’t drink but I could care less about the beer ads.
KEEP THE AD CBS!
Good for CBS. Maybe there is hope that CBS will move away from being a mainstream media bastian of liberal causes – HAH, unlikely. Nevertheless, as a columnist wrote recently, “Movie stars and athletes use their names and faces to sell beer and shoes simply to enrich themselves, and nobody blinks. they dye their hair orange (Rodman) or dress like an idiot (Lady Gaga). Now a famous athlete is using his celeb status to promote a cause he believes in and he’s castigated for it.” Rich men use their money to promote political issues. Hollywood uses the media incesantly to promote gay rights, the environment, and abortion. Why the furor over Tebow? Simple answer. The left, libs, can’t stand fairness in thought or speech! Never have since the days of the Constitutional Convention and never will.
Blah blah blah
Wow, IRW! You seem very open-minded and respectful of opposing views. Guess what? Insulting other people’s views is not constructive, and certainly doesn’t change hearts and minds. I could call you names, too, but I’m not that kind of person.
Where in IRW’s statement did he call names? The only thing he said was that the left didn’t like fairness in thought or speech. And I think you just proved his point.
What “liberal causes” does CBS support through their advertising? Because I sure haven’t seen anything lately other than regular old commercials, and PSAs encouraging women to get PAP smears.
