Doc Jensen is down in the hatch busily preparing for the return of Lost on Feb. 2 — but he did send some smoke (monster) signals to point me to all the “burning questions that have to be answered in Season Six” posts floating around the Internet in recent days.
At SciFiWire, the 100 questions include “Who is Jacob?” “What’s going on with the pregnancies?” “What happened to Claire?” and “What are Widmore’s plans for The Island?”
At prominent fansite docarzt.com, The Myth of Lost author Marc Oromaner has three separate categories of Lost questions.
There is the obvious big question: What IS the Island? Other than that, I want to know: What is the smoke monster? Who built the statue? What’s up with the polar bears? And one slightly nitpicky question from season one, episode 10 that’s always bugged me: What did the psychic foresee for Claire’s baby (Aaron)? I got goosebumps watching that episode, and I still have no idea what Malkin saw — or, should we believe from Eko’s flashback that the psychic was a complete fraud and didn’t have a vision about Aaron? See, even raising one question brings up about 20 more.
So, now, over to you: What’s the burning question you need/want answered during the final season?

How did Walt get his abilities, why did Shannon and Locke see Walt when he wasn’t actually around, why was he so important to the Others, and what happened to him in Room 23?
Anything to do with Walt would be nice to get answered. Good question.
Agreed. One of the reason I hated the “Jeremy Bentham” episode was because the Locke/Walt scene was such a pointless, missed opportunity. We def need to learn more about Walt!
Ditto! A glorified cameo.
Yes! I really liked Walt and they totally dropped the ball with his character. Why is Walt special? Bring Malcolm back for season six!
Maybe Walt will lead the next gen of “others” to the island…along with Aaron, Ji-Yeon, Charlie Hume. LOL
How about what happened to the stewardess and all of the kids taken by the Others in Season 2? BTW didn’t they answer the Polar Bear question when it was revealed that the Other’s compound had a zoo when Kate and Sawyer were held captive in the bear cage. The real question should be how did they get out and what else is loose on the Island?
I’m with BC…
The FANTASTIC scene at the end with Ben and Locke notwithstanding, I thought the “Jeremy Bentham” episode was a HUGE letdown. All of Locke’s attempts to convince the castaways were WAY too rushed and definitely, the biggest miss was his visit to Walt.
yeah like why the hell did they take micheals blood when he went to the others camp? And the polar bears question was answered in reverse. If you remember we saw charlotte find a polar bear skeleton in the middle of the dessert then we saw Ben then john pop up in the same dessert after turning the wheel which implies they were using the polar bears as guinea pigs to turn the wheel
Yeah, I was all set to scroll down and add my two cents about Walt (which is my 16-month old son’s name, btw. not Walter. just Walt.), but I saw your questions and they totally sum up mine. In particular, I’d like to know more about the episode when Michael goes to get Walt from Australia, when they see the dead bird in the house and the Dharma symbol on the ceiling.
Oh my, I never saw the Dharma symbol. I am going to take out my DVD of that episode and check it out. The one thing that bothers me with these little clues (if you will) and inserts of coincidences throughout the series is that in the end they will be meaningless and thus not even addressed.
Yes! I want to know about WALT! WA-HA-HA-AAAAALT!
haha thats the only way me and my family say walt. yelling it and holding it out!
Agreed. My family does the same. Unfortunately I have done it before in front of others and they don’t understand. If you try and explain, ‘See the father was crying out for his son while lost in the sea’ it makes me sounds really mean.
We have to find out about Walt and what’s up with him and those freakin’ birds!
Hi there Duffy! I can’t even see the name Walt with out thinking WAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLTTTTTT or CAAAAAAMMMMM!
I want to know everything about Walt and why the others wanted him. Seeing him kidnapped and Michael calling was tramatizing! At least Sawyer got some closure for getting to say that’s for taking the boy.
Michael annoyed me so when he would belt out Walt’s name. To be honest, ever since Season 2 when The Others captured Michael, I have been questioning whether he was really Walt’s father.
Walt went to Disney. lol
What the heck did they do with Walt while he was with the Others? What was the deal with the computers? Why was he there (“online”) when Michael decided to try typing on the computer? Come on, throw us a bone!
We call him “Taller Ghost Walt”
Agreed!! The little bit of Walt we got last season wasn’t enough!
yes! walt! and why them? why did the island choose them? / did it choose them? why are they all connected? or is it just six degrees?
I have just finished re-watching all of the Lost DVDs, and Walt’s “special abilities” really aren’t that special. A bird flew into a window… uh, big deal. The incidents surrounding Walt are easily explained by coincidence, and his appearances on the island are probably the same as Kate’s horse, Mr. Eko’s brother, etc. It won’t bother me at all if we learn nothing more about Walt in the final season.
i dont think its very much coincidence- the “others” were VERY much freaked out over Walt’s “powers”… im very curious to know what the f— is up with that kid
The problem with the Others is you can’t make sense of their actions without knowing their motives… and they’ve never revealed their motive for Walt. I got the feeling they were so interested in Walt because they were testing to see if he would be their next leader (same as they tested John).
The bird that flew into the window was rare and wasn’t local to Australia. That’s more than just a coincidence.
LOL! Where do you get that from?
I kind of agree that much could be explained about Walt’s “powers” by coincidence, but what about the pile of dead birds they found outside of Room 23?
yes! anything WALT-related is ok by me!
word-for-word YES!
Ditto
@Iggy – walt will be the charlotte that time – wanting to get back to where he once was
Those are exactly the questions that automatically came to my head when reading this post. What was Walt’s significance? Why did The Others take certain people?
What are the whispers?
I think they are people being heard talking as the island is floating through time.
Didn’t Doc Jensen do this question already at the end of last season?
YES!
Sorry to interrupt this thread but tv.com is ripping ew.com again:
http://www.tv.com/10-questions-lost-needs-to-answer/story/21019.html
Walt! It so bothered me that we learned nothing about him, especially since he was such an appealing character.
I think the Libby-in-the-mental-hospital thing was really played up as a cliffhanger ending. Dramatic music, slow pan and reveal of Libby, then BOOM.. Lost ending logo. It seems like this is something they really need to answer. But unfortunatly I think there are many things like that that will not be answered. I think that Abrams, Lindeloff, Cuse, the writers had a basic concept in mind that they emebelished as they went along. For a while there they did not have a specific end date and thus did not really know how many balls (mysteries) they needed to keep in the air. They had things like the Libby cliffhanger, some of the Walt stuff etc. that they just didn’t need later to complete the main story in the time they have left, so I think many of those might just get dropped, hoping we forget about them. The problem they have with completing aspects of the Walt story is the kid was at an age where he was about to start growing up rapidly.. obviously they can’t go back and film any flashbacks… so anything they do now to explain Walt has to be through narrative.. just can’t imagine a scene with Ben and the others sitting around a campfire reminiscing about why they were freaked about about Walt. Ijust think there are many things that we are just going to have to assume won’t get answered becasue of where the story headed as it evolved.
How soon everyone forgot about LIBBY???!!! We NEVER did find out how she got the boat to Desmond and HOW was she in the Psych ward with Hurley? Walt and the kids are my SECOND most wanted answer? Where are Cindy and Emma and the little boy? Why were they soooo special? And what was up with Walt and his abilities? I don t care of Walt is older OFF the island … let’s give the fans some answers!!
Libby being in the Psyche Ward was explained on the season 3 Blu-ray. The writers had a Libby back-story in mind which they were going to show but the actress quit (or was fired) and so her story wasn’t told. It was basically that she loved her husband really much. The circumstance and the manner of Robert’s death have such a great impact on her that she goes crazy. That is why she was so emotional when talking to Desmond and offered him the boat.
Who cares about Walts abilities, I wanna know how Walt aged so fast while the others stayed the same? it only been a few months on the island and it seems like Walt is a grown man
Not so much a specific question, but I would like to know more about Jacob and the Man In Black. What is the nature of their relationship? What powers does/did Jacob possess? How long have they been on the island/how did they come to be there? Are there others like them?
The one question I want answered is what makes these people (Locke, Jack, Sawyer, Walt, ect.) so special?
That’s THE question I want answered, why were these particular people picked as “pieces” in the overall story? I also want to know why Walt is special as well.
I hope it has something to do with Jacob physically touching each of them – they made such an obvious point of showing that in the Season 5 finale…
One thing that I need to know that has not been address: in Par Avion Claire’s mother was in a horrific car accident that left her near dead. Yet by season five she was up and about, just fine, and playing a part in the narrative events as Kate and Aaron attempted to make new lives in the real world…how did she get better?
Well 3 years had passed since the plane crash, so she definitely had time to recover. Whether she came out of the coma naturally, or was cured “by Jacob” or something like that, is anyone’s guess. Not sure if that will be addressed though — people come out of coma’s all the time.
Agreed…but it’s sloppy not to address it period. Especially considering Christian was trying to convince her daughter to pull the plug. I just hope that at least reference it in the final season. I don’t want to assume she randomly “got better.”
Plus, in the grand scheme of things, Claire’s mom is waaaaaaaaaaaaay low on the totem pole…like almost non-existent.
True, I wouldn’t assume anything is “random’ on this show. I wouldn’t be surprised if we hear some explanation considering that KAte is looking to reunite Claire with Aaron, I;m sure the fact that her mother is alive will come up.
I still don;t consider it a major mystery, but it could be addressed. I love the show, but there have been worse examples of sloppy writing on the show than that, so who knows
It was more like 6 months to a year because we see Claire’s mom at Christian Shepherd’s funeral.
Remember when Juliet first came to the island, and Ben told her he could cure her sister’s cancer in exchange for her staying? And then her sister WAS cured? Maybe Ben had something to do with Claire’s mom too. I agree, we need to know the motive of the Others for sure.
Actually it was 10 months from the plane crash till we see her at Christian’s funeral service. But she was in that coma for a while.
I want to know so many things! Why THESE people? What happened to Claire? What is Christian Shepard’s role in all this? Is Ben good or evil? When did Locke stop being Locke and WTF??? Who/what is Walt? Who is Mrs. H? How many times has this happened? Is it like BSG “all of this has happened before and…” Is this REALLY the final battle? Between who and what? GAH! And what happened to the dog? ‘Cause I really liked that dog.
Ha, great questions! Though we saw what happened to the dog, he’s been living with Rose and Bernard on the island in the 70s.
I think the dog was with Rose and Bernard living in the hippee beach shack in the last season.
bark!
agreed agreed, but more specifically, WHAT is christian shephard. is he alive? is he the smoke monster? etc etc etc.
and also, what was up with those CREEPTASTIC dolls in the waterfall/pond thing from the 5th episode (the same one where jack was chasing his dad). seriously. they have been bugging me non-stop.
I’m assuming that the man in black took over Christian Shephard’s body, just like he did with Locke. Remember the empty caskets? And “Christian” was the one who convinced Locke that he (Locke), not Ben should have been the one to turn the donkey wheel and leave the island, thus setting Locke up for his death off the island, so that the Man in Black could assume his body once it was back on the island.
We already know that Ben is evil but believes he’s misunderstood. The genocide, patricide, Lockicide, and Jacobcide didn’t clue you in? Ha.
Christian Sheppard is dead and the Smoke Monster Man has been using his image, just like Yemi, Alex and Locke.
I was going to mention Ben, too. I have lots of questions, but that’s a big one. Michael Emerson is so good, you can’t read him and I really want to know what side he’s on … probably his own.
I think the polar bears have already been answered – they had been brought to the island by DHARMA for experiments.
Big things like the smoke monster and details on Jacob and the Man in Black will df be deatl with.
As for Malkin’s vision, by theory is that Eko’s flashback was a clue that he IS in fact a fraud, and never saw anything about Claire, but was coerced to lie to her by someone who REALLY wanted her on that plane. Was it The Others? Jacob? Widmore? Abbadon? That I don’t know, but that’s my theory and I think it’s a good one.
Right –
More specifically, it seems like the polar bears were brought and assimilated to the Island so that they would be the ones who turned the frozen donkey wheel. As we know, whoever turns the wheel winds up in the Tunisian desert, so by training a polar bear (which could also withstand the cold climate of the donkey wheel room) to do it, no person would ever have to turn the wheel.
I know it’s fashionable to say “what’s up with the polar bears” because the show is set on an island and it’s weird that there are polar bears present, but I feel like this really has been addressed properly.
I agree that the polar bears were obviously trained to turn the wheel because remember, Charlotte found polar bear fossils in the Tunisian desert (fossils had Dharma initiative collars on)
What the hell is the deal with Richard Alpert!?
Agreed!!
Totally — Why doesn’t he age? What’s up with the kohl eyeliner?
Out of all the many, many mysteries I would like to see solved, How Richard appears unchanged through the years is at the top of my list. Is he a robot? Clone? Avatar? Time traveler? Is there a portrait of him hidden in a basement somewhere?
Yes, ageless Richard!!!
He has to be special dead (as my friend and I call him)!
he isn’t wearing eyeliner. he’s cuban.
I think he’s from the Black Rock, and Jacob granted him long life as the be an Advisor for all those who come to the Island.
This is my number one question too?
I think once this one is answered a lot of the other questions will be answered too.
Second that! And, what exactly is his role on the island? In all the time periods he was seen he always seems to have authority just shy of the current “leader” (Widmore, Ben). But when he accepts Ben from Kate & Sawyer after he was shot, the other others warn him that Widmore and Ellie will be mad, and he makes some comment like “I don’t answer to them.”
The Big Obvious Question: For what purpose were the castaways’ drawn to the island? What is it they have to accomplish? Is this the first time they’ve been through this? Or is it the fifth or sixth time and they just don’t remember?
They must accomplish balance–that people can co-exist. The Hostile and the Dharma folks couldn’t, the Lostaways and the Others couldn’t…but things are changing, and Jack and the gang are on the right track.
Also, what is the donkey wheel connected to?? What exactly did Ben turn? We know what it did, not how it did it.
That’s what I want to know more than anything. What IS the donkey wheel? Who created it? HOW did they create it…and even know to create it? Why Tunisia?
It like when the Titanic was found in the desert in Close Encounters.
What’s the extent of Miles’s abilities and how did he get them?
It appears that Miles’ abilities are somehow connected to him being born on the island. Not sure why, but it looks like the extent of them is that he can “hear” the thoughts of the deceased, allowing him to know what they were thinking when they died.
Then again, there might be more to it. In his first flashback, we actually see him speak to a dead boy in his old bedroom, and of course you can;t remember how strangely he was staring at Claire just before she went off into the jungle with Christian…
I agree that it has something to do with being born on the island but that just raises more questions… Do other people born on the island have abilities we just don’t know about. Ethan? Charlotte? Aaron?
That’s an interesting take. I’d expect the whole island/pregnancy/children thing will be answered this season, so I wouldn’t be surprised if why Miles has those powers is addressed as part of all that. Then again, Walt has powers but he wasn’t born on the island, so maybe its unrelated
Oh jesus, you just blew my mind.
My fear is that Miles first introduction has been forgotten. He was obviously communing with the dead, i.e. GHOSTS. He was not just reading the energy released immediately upon death–which is far less interesting. I’m guessing when they created Miles they were unsure of how the Dead would play into the scenario and, as Season Five showed, his abilites seem to be altered. Unless the Whispers are actually the Dead, which I’ve always thought.
I want to know what the black smoke is all about, why didn’t Sun disappear into time with everybody else, what Jack’s dad involvement, those damn numbers and why Ben told Sun to apologize to Desmond for him when he was alive, shot I know but alive with Penny and little Charlie?
Yes! I’ve wanted to know why Sun didn’t go back to the 70′s with the rest of them!
Jack went back because he had dead Locke to take the place of dead Dad. Hurley went back because he had Charlie’s guitar, to take the place of Charlie. Sayid and Kate were basically alone anyway. Sun didn’t go back because she was missing Jin.
Huh?!
Why haven’t been more offshore Dharma shark attacks..?
ha
what are the numbers?
4 8 15 16 23 42
um, I think they were asking “what” meaning what is their significance
Ha, we’ll def get more info on the numbers, but I don’t expect to learn EVERYHTING about what they mean and where they come from. Some things just “are”, you know?
Isn’t the theory that they are part of some grand formula that explains… everything? Sorta like the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything. (42)
It’s not really a theory, persay; in one of the alternate-reality games between season, it’s revealed the the numbers are the factors of the Valenzetti Equation, which predicts the end of the world. The Dharma Initiative was (partially) started to find out how to change even one of those numbers, thereby preventing the end of the world. That’s why the numbers were originally broadcast on a loop (when Hurley’s friend in the mental institution, Leonard (along with Sam Toomey of Australia), heard them while stationed in the South Pacific). The Initiative was to change the recording if they ever successfully changed one of the numbers, which they obviously never did.
My comment goes back to the finale of season 3 when henry told charlie that if he stopped the jamming signal from the looking glass, and died, aaron and claire would get off the island. Obviously claire did not get off the island, so what did desmond really see, or was he just manipulating charlie to get to penny?
Unless he was just extrapolating out what he thought it meant to see himself and others get off the island in “There’s No Place Like Home.” Maybe he thought seeing some people be saved meant all would be saved since that’s what the freighter represented to them at the time.
I 100% agree, that has been driving me crazy for seasons. I mean, Charlie even asks “You are SURE you saw them get off the island?” before jumping into the water, ha. The whole point was that Charlie HAD to die for that vision to come true – so why didnt it? But then again … maybe it still will…
Johan, that’s a possibility — but i t would be pretty lame. I mean, the whole motivation for Charlie was that he was going to save Aaron AND Claire, it would be pretty weak of the writers to just ignore that. I mean, his #1 Greatest Hit was meeting her after all. My biggest fear is that the writers just backed themselves into a corner and had to kill Charlie in the finale for dramatic purposes.
One theory I do have is that the Man in Black was manipulating Desmonds visions to seperate Charlie from Aaron. Once he wass out of the picture, he seperated Claire from AAron. Why? We’ll see ….
At this point, I’m all but convinced that almost nothing anyone has done up until this point will matter as a result of Juliet’s a-bomb… I don’t know if I like that idea or not.
Me neither, but I dont agree what happened before then doesnt matter. I have faith that the writers wouldnt do that to us
Desmond’s visions were a part of course correction. So it’s entirely possible that whatever sent them showed Desmond what he needed to see in order to be able to convince Charlie he had to die.
Laura K. thats incorrect. There was no need to CONVINCE Charlie to die, Des could have just stopped saving him. The course correction was that whenevr Des saved Charlie, the universe would just figure out a new way to kill him.
The issue we are discussing with Des’ vision is that the vision only changed is Des changed something. Since he finally allowed Charlie to die, he didn’t change anything, meaning the vision of Claire leaving the island should have come true. So why didnt it? That’s the question.
I completely agree, it seems like Charlie died in vain b/c Desmond’s vision did not come true. It’s a huge inconsistency. The plot hole is especially problematic if the a-bomb resets the timeline rendering it all moot anyway. I’m very frustrated by this.
It seems that some force (MIB?) was trying to kill off Charlie…BEFORE he unjammed the signal in the Looking Glass. Another force (Jacob?) allowed Desmond to see these projected deaths…and allowed him to use his free will to stop it…until he got to the Looking Glass, where he fulfilled destiny…if the signal were not unjammed, the freighter would never make it to the island, and that would have been a problem for the timeline.
It’s unclear why he said he saw Claire and Aaron get on a helicopter…but it is true that except for seeing Locke’s speech, EVERY instance of seeing a glimpse of the future had to do with Charlie’s impending death. A real battle for destiny there…
Maybe it’s simple. Desmond told Charlie he was going to die to give Charlie the chance to prepare himself(say goodbye etc.) and then he LIED about Claire to make Charlie feel better.
Has anyone considered that Desmond’s vision just simply hasn’t come true YET? We’re dealing with a lot of time travel now, couldn’t it be possible that all that had to happen for the ultimate result of Claire and baby Aaron getting on the helicopter? It could still happen. There was no time line on Desmond’s vision, if I recall correctly.
or he saw Aaron in the arms of a woman on a helicopter, but couldn’t see the woman clearly and assumed he saw Aaron with Claire
I want a cool explanation of the numbers. I remember the producers saying that there’s nothing specifically huge about them, but I hope that’s not true. Blow my mind numerically, please?
Well:
8+15=23
15+23+4=42
er…that’s all I’ve got
Damn! I thought you were really on to to something.
The numbers, 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42, are explained in the Sri Lanka Video, as the numerical values to the core environmental and human factors of the Valenzetti Equation
The Valenzetti Equation is the mathematical equation developed by the reclusive Princeton University mathematician Enzo Valenzetti.
um.. just go to Lostpedia and read more about it.. but yeah, the numbers have already been explained in the Lost universe. Even tptb have said this before. They were just never explained on the TV show.
They had to come up with an explanation for those numbers. J.J. Abrams has a thing about those numbers. Check out Alias… they’re everywhere.
I don’t think the numbers have been explained, nor will they ever be, because the writers created them without any idea of what their eventual meaning would be. The Valenzetti Equation was made up to explain where the numbers originated, but it doesn’t explain why those numbers, which happen to add up to 108, were stamped on the Swan hatch BEFORE the Incident. The purpose of the Swan was changed AFTER the Incident; instead of a research facility it became the stop-gap to vent EM energy. Quite a coincidence that the venting had to happen every 108 minutes.
