'Damages' returns tonight: Who else is excited?

Filed under: Television and tagged: ,

Damages comes back tonight! Woohoo! The rich, suspenseful legal thriller is one of my favorites, and not just because Glenn Close kicks so much ass as queen bee (and bee-yotch) Patty Hewes. Also because Damages has the best, most against-type supporting cast. Ted Danson’s performance as bad guy Arthur Frobisher is one of my favorite TV surprises ever — I never expected Sam Malone to be such a perfectly nuanced villain. Darrell Hammond’s creepy assassin dude was another interesting departure, and William Hurt’s slippery scientist had me guessing all season long. This time we’re in for some more A-listers, but I’m particularly jazzed for the comedic-turned-dramatic stars Lily Tomlin and Martin Short.

My one concern is the central case of the season: It’s about a Louis Tobin (Len Cariou), a Bernie Madoff-esque greedy financier. If any show can make me interested in finance, it’s Damages, but it’s an uphill battle. I can’t be the only one who’s Madoff-ed out, am I?

Still, some hesitation about the case can’t dull my enthusiasm for the show. Other than Patty and Ellen, who do you love on Damages, PopWatchers?

I found William Hurt to be a bore last season but I’m sure I’m in the minority. I am curious as to how they will plausibly work Ellen into the story arc this season. And they always have great supporting “guest” actors including Marcia Gay Harden, Zeljko Ivanek, Timothy Olyphant, Philip Bosco and Peter Reigert so I’m looking forward to the newbies.

Ooh, Marcia Gay Harden, that’s right… This show always has great roles for women. I can’t wait to see what they do with Lily Tomlin!

I didn’t care for William Hurt last season either. I felt like he was reading a teleprompter instead of acting. Loved the surprise of season one – Ted Danson did a wonderful job!

BF, you ain’t the only one who found Hurt to be a bore last year. I think the majority did. That said it really didn’t hurt the show that much. Was a great year, though not as good as the first year. I’m expecting this to be the last year of Damages from stuff I read so I sure hope it goes out with a bang! With yet another all-star cast I have high hopes for it as always! Can’t wait!

I agree the characters last season weren’t as strong. This season is a whole different ball game and back to Season 1 form.

As much as I love Glenn Close, I can’t stomach any more legal dramas. I haven’t watched one in about ten years, and I’m not missing them at all.

ah! it’s back! great news…any word on whether or not the show has been renewed past season 3?As far as the love goes, Patty and Ellen are spectacular (where is rose byrnes’ emmy? globe?)but I hope we get Frobisher as full blown evil again…he was such a bore last season. And lily tomlin is always a great add to any cast…should be interesting to see her play this character. martin short? as far as the trailers go…big on the creepy factor…guess that’s a good sign.

I’m excited! I unfortunately won’t be able to watch it for awhile because I’m still waiting to see Season 2. I have it in my Netflix queue at the very top but it’s on “long wait” status. My husband and I were late to catch the “Damages” train and only saw Season 1 on DVD last spring– and then we were hooked like it was crack cocaine. So I’ll be DVR-ing Season 3 so that I don’t have to wait a year for it to come out on DVD!

You know Zo you really don’t have to wait. Go to fxnetwork.com and watch the recap it’s about 15 mins long and get’s you caught up. Then sit down and watch Damages new story tonight. The show doesn’t have many loose threads from S2 except for the Ellen and Patty and storyline.

you could have watched the show online. There are so many websites that air the show.

  • Craig

Lisa – are you saying that before or after having seen this show? Because it’s definitely not a “legal drama” like The Practice or Law & Order, it’s a straight up mystery/thriller that’s set in a legal world environment. I can almost guarantee you that if you watch just the pilot episode, you’ll see it’s not what it may sound like

    • Lisa Simpson

Thanks, Craig. I haven’t watched it, but if it’s more mystery-based than another legal drama, I may consider it. I love the actors involved, so that alone would raise it above the normal level. Basically, I had sworn off any show with a lawyer or cop (and I’m adding doctor to that list) on the general principle that TV producers need to be more creative.

For those asking, not having seen messy S2 of Damages is actually a plus. Dive right into S3 tonight. Starts off great. -Matt Roush, TV Critic for TV Guide Magazine

    • Jennifer

Yeah, I gave up on S2 midway. It was too boring. I’m just gonna pick back up with S3. I can’t wait.

  • Jackie

Damages sucks you in and doesn’t let go. This show is so addicting can’t wait for tonight.

  • HotMama

I saw Season 1, but missed Season 2. Do I really need to see it to get Season 3?

    • prettypaula

no u can jump right in!

This is the only television series I get excited about watching. While season 2 wasn’t quite as good as the first, it was still a well-crafted, mysterious, and thrilling season of television. To say that I’m excited about tonight’s premiere is like saying the moon is big.

  • prettypaula

i loved Uncle Pete! and the sneakily slippery Tom!

  • Irene

    A+ for acting and writing.
    Simply spectacular.
