Stephen Colbert to Dick Ebersol: 'When's the smoke gonna come out of NBC? What's going on?'

On last night’s Colbert Report, Stephen interviewed Dick Ebersol, NBC Universal’s Chairman of Sports and Olympics, who’s come under fire for describing soon-to-be-ex Tonight Show host Conan O’Brien as “chicken-hearted and gutless” and “an astounding failure.” Ebersol gave Colbert an official NBC Olympics sweater vest and invited him to deliver a special report to Bob Costas on the most important speedskating night, Feb. 17, as Colbert will be in Vancouver covering the Games. Did Ebersol have a title in mind for Colbert as part of the NBC team, he wondered? “Because I kind of like ‘host of The Tonight Show,’ Colbert suggested. He continued: “I’m just saying…right now, it’s like there’s gonna be no pope. When’s the smoke gonna come out of NBC to let us know what’s going on?” Ebersol was visibly uncomfortable, then shot back, “Where were you several months ago when an opening was about to happen?” (Seriously?) “Drunk,” Colbert replied.

Don’t miss FIRE ON ICE: Colbert’s race against speedskating nemesis Shani Davis. It’s hilarious and not just because Colbert can’t skate and is swathed in sequins. Winner got the last spot on the Olympic team….

Ebersol just ensured I won’t be watching the Olympics. Or NBC at all, if I can help it.

“Where were you when it became apparent that there’d be an opening?” Ebersol wasn’t even trying not to come off as an old skeeze. Colbert probably burned that stupid sweater vest.

Also, as a Colbert fan, I hope he avoids doing the special report. He’s too good to be tainted by NBC.

      • Quirky

I don’t know. It might end up being as fun as the Washington DC correspondents dinner he did.

  • Lynny

    Mr. Ebersol is appropriately named.

      ebersol? ;)

When is EW going to do something about its broken home page? Only a small portion of it displays. What kind of crappy quality control do you have?

    • tdunf

it must just be you, cause mine displays fine.

    • JennBell

Yep, must be you. No problems seeing the home page over here.

  • Yes

That was an uncomfortable interview. Ebersol is a jerk, and he proved it during that interview. Letterman was right that Ebersol didn’t even need to get involved by trashing Conan. I won’t be watching the Olympic coverage either – I may watch events but skipping all the other junk. I want to support the athletes, but NBC makes me sick.

The best part was when Colbert handed him a large cheque for $1.78 that the Colbert Nation raised to help cover NBC Sports’ $200 million loss.

snicker …Colbert ( and comedy central) trumped him-
i wish nbc well , but They are skating on thin ice in so many ways

Dear ABC, please pick up “The Office”, “Parks and Recreation”, “30 Rock” and “Community” and I will completely abandon NBC… what a joke of a network, but I love their Thursday night comedy lineup…

even the “Seinfeld” reunion (sort of) was away from that network.

  • Mykl

Yeah and about seven days into the co-coverage NBC will replace Colbert with Leno. What a joke, this is so good… it shows EXACTLY who most, if not all the comedians are loyal to and that is Conan.
Ebersol’s first name is Dick. It fits so well.

@Matt: I don’t think ABC would pick up any of those shows due to the contracts the productions have with them. Though ABC should at least try for “Community” and “30 Rock” if given the chance (but then again half of “30 Rock” jokes work cause of it being NBC). The other two shows can rot for all care, “The Office” stopped being funny a long time ago (though Jenna is always great to look at) and will never be a great as the original. And “Parks & Recreation” just is an annoying rip off what is now a hack show.

Colbert should’ve asked Ebersol how his tank job of NBC Sports is going: lost the NBA, lost the NFL, screwed up the Olympics, in an iron-clad contract with Notre Dame Football. Seriously, Tennis Night In America has got to be a bigger draw than Figure Skating to Random Band.

I was a bit surprised to see that Colbert (and Viacom) were going to work with NBC.

  • Ken J

Really, looks like that was the only way Colbert could have reported from Vancouver with non- Green Screen footage (sorry Daily Show) was to become part of the right holder’s team. Great move NBC. Similar to Letterman’s Mom.

  • Eros

Show me an American under 60 that still watches the Winter Olympics and I’ll show you a social misfit or a 40yr old virgin.

    • Lynny

actually, I think you are forgetting (non-virgin/social misfit) people with kids. It works out pretty well as family tv. Just sayin.

  • Molly

Let’s remember that this is about the Olympians, not a stupid network. Rise above NBC’s shenanigans and do your report anyway, Colbert. The speedskaters still deserve your support, even if the network doesn’t.

    • Sandra

Your right!!! It’s super awesome what Colbert did for the speedskaters. It’s not his fault or any of the athlete’s fault that the network that shows the Olympics is run by a bunch of moron who all deserve to get fired.

I do want to add how much I really dislike Dick Ebersol and can some please explain what he means by “Where were you several months ago when an opening was about to happen?” Because there was no “opening”; Conan had a contract

  • MikerMan

Watch the Candian coverage! WAY BETTER anyway, and they aren’t as biased, they actually cover all conutries equally. CTV is the network. You can get it on line!

  • Dave R

LOL “tramp stamp: it’s something like a peacock” – wow, what a quick one and everyone seems to be missing it :P
