'Big Bang Theory' recap: Sheldon and Leonard get robbed, and Sheldon moves away to...Montana?!

First things first: My apologies for missing my Big Bang Theory recap last week, fellow Big Bang Theorists. You can blame the amoebae that have taken up residence in my tummy and fell me but good last Monday night. (I’ll spare y’all any further description other than to relay that, stemming from my best guess for the complicated scientific names for the little buggers based on what my doctor told me, my boyfriend has decided to call the amoebae Butch and Nana. Sheldon would so not approve.) I was especially bummed that I didn’t get to commiserate with you about last week’s Big Bang, too, since a night out as Raj’s wingman brought out a delightfully unexpected flirtatious side of Sheldon Cooper — even if Sheldon himself was completely unaware that he was, in fact, flirting with a co-ed with a rather improbable fetish for super-hero merch. (As opposed to Sheldon’s completely probable fetish for super-hero merch.)

Last night’s episode continued the writers’ fearless trek into the hidden corners of Sheldon’s labyrinthine psyche, although this week’s discoveries weren’t really all that surprising: Sheldon and Leonard got robbed, and Sheldon completely flipped out. That was pretty much the entire episode, too — Sheldon’s reaction to getting robbed, and everyone else’s reactions to Sheldon getting robbed, even though Leonard’s stuff got robbed, too. Heck, Penny couldn’t even muster more than a sympathy glass of wine for her boyfriend’s plight; she saved her real aw-poor-Pooh-bear pity for Sheldon.

Now, I could just be reading into things a bit too closely, but was I the only one who thought Leonard’s frustration with Sheldon last night began to bleed over a smidge into Johnny Galecki’s frustration with the writers’ growing indifference to his character? Coupled with last week’s forced and trite “my girlfriend believes in psychics!” storyline, and Leonard’s rapidly moving from Big Bang‘s long-suffering straight man to the killjoy who dawdles away time between scenes with Sheldon and Penny.

Anyhoo, after Sheldon and Leonard lost their TV, two laptops, four external hard drives, a PS2, a PS3, an Xbox, an Xbox 360, a classic Nintendo, a Super Nintendo, a Nintendo 64, and a Nintendo Wii (what, no love for Sega Genesis?!), Sheldon’s fear at getting robbed again escalated at a funny-if-rather-predictable pace: First, moving his dresser to block his bedroom door, only to be stymied by his unruly bladder; then dragging Pennard back to his apartment for a late night game of scientific pictionary (of course! Higgs Boson Particle!); then calling on Howard to install some cutting-edge home security equipment “borrowed” from the Department of Defense; then fleeing out his own window after hearing a strange sound, crawling along the outside ledge to Leonard’s window, and interrupting Pennard mid-makeout; then falling victim to Howard’s security system, specifically the electrified trap-net (the best sight-gag of the night); and finally deciding to move away from crime-riddled Pasadena to, of all places, Bozeman, Mont.

Really, the only shocking moment came in Sheldon’s farewell video to his “three closest friends and one treasured acquaintance,” when he never bothered to disclose that the reason he chose Bozeman over all other supposedly Sheldon-friendly crime-free destinations was likely because it’s the site of first contact between humans and Vulcans, as depicted in the 1998 feature film Star Trek: First Contact. (Perhaps the Vulcan salute was all the homage he needed.) Alas, the idyllic Bozeman of Trek fiction was not the freezing cold Bozeman of Big Bang, er, fiction, and Sheldon was conned out of the rest of his worldly belongings the moment he stepped off the bus, forcing him to return to the mean streets of Pasadena. As punch lines go, that’s not bad, but I do kinda wish Sheldon had hung out a bit longer in Bozeman, just so the writers would be forced to come up with something for the rest of the Big Bang gang to do without their MVG (most valuable geek) around.

Best Microsoft ad of the night, and maybe ever:
Sheldon: “My new computer came with Windows 7. Windows 7 is much more user friendly than Windows Vista. I don’t like that.”

Obligatory joke about Johnny Galecki’s Leonard’s stature:
Penny: Sheldon, do want to sleep here tonight?
Sheldon: Oh, as small as Leonard is, I don’t think the two of you would be comfortable on the couch.

Best running gag:
Sheldon continuing to insist “I’m not crazymy mother had me tested!

Okay, Big Bang Theorists, what did you think of Sheldon’s post-robbery meltdown? Do you think Leonard’s becoming kinda irrelevant? (And do you care?) What would actually make up “mobster sauce”? And was there any doubt at all that Howard was the acquaintance?

I am the Master of My Bladder!

    • Nic.

Only thing funnier was “I am no longer Master of My Bladder!”

  • JLC

I was thinking the same thing about Leonard last night. Since Sheldon and Penny unexpectedly have 10X the chemistry of Penny and Leonard, he is becoming increasingly superfluous. Heck, as Leonard’s mom keeps pointing out, Howard and Raj have more chemistry.
Don’t know how they’ll do it without completely messing up the group dynamic (Scrubs, anyone?), but they need to break up Leonard and Penny, or at least figure out something for Leonard to do.

  • kim in kentucky

Liked that Sheldon has now incorporated Leonard into his knock — knock knock knock Leonard and Penny, knock knock knock Leonard and Penny …….

    • Sara

      Who is it?

      • HulaHoop

        It’s Sheldon Cooper!

  • Jax

I liked that episode and no Leonard is not irrelevant, Penny was less relevant in this episode than Leonard. The problem is much like that of HIMYM where the supposed leading man is overwhelmed by a costar much more suited for the role they are portraying.

    • Kat

Leonard is my favorite character on the show. He always has been. I love Sheldon Don’t get me wrong, but they need to use the other characters more. That’s what makes this a great show. It’s the 5 of them, not just Sheldon.

      • Renee

I agree. I have no problem with Leonard and Penny as a couple -in fact, I like them together- but I’m sure there is much more the writers can explore with them as a couple, not just on the side.

      • Kirk

I agree with you on your “5 of them” theory.

The way I see it, Leonard is the most “normal” in the group — a median by which the idiosyncracies of the rest of the group are most amplified. thus making their 5 character team-up must effective.

I have noticed Leonard has become less and less a force in the storyline. But that’s the price of working on a series with a standout like Jim Parsons. I have to applaud Parsons for last night’s performance. I could see the electrical net joke coming from far away BUT he still sold it and I still rolled around laughing. Of course, PENNARD standing there just casually talking to him as he continues to receive jolts and him answering calmly broke me down totally. Good stuff…darned good stuff.

Although Sheldon has been my favorite character since season 1 (along with Raj), I do find that the writers are putting too much of the emphasis on him. One of the great things about this show is that all of the characters have the potential to be funny / weird / etc…but they don’t seem to be getting the plotlines that they used to. I do hope that things will change, just because I don’t want to see my favorite show become too unrecognizable. Still, I did like last night’s ep. The best scene by far was the electrified net bit!

  • TheObserver

Raj and sheldon (last week episode) Penny and Sheldon (the episode where he had to take her to the hospital) and Lenoard and sheldon (the entire first season) have always had great storylines together…I knew that howard was the aquaintence…but his deadpan delivery of the last line of the night was hilarious. Jim Parsons needs an Emmy…the campaign should begin NOW!

    • Teresa

I completely agree that he needs an Emmy but for some reason people think that Steve Carrel or Alex Baldwin is funnier!

      • T

        People would be wrong.

      • Elle

Alex Baldwin is pretty funny too

  • Kelly

I loved last night’s episode. I thought the beginning bit was hilarious…”mobster sauce with mobster chunks”. It was also nice to see the cast work off one plot line for change, as it used to be in earlier seasons. Personally, I thought Johnny Galecki was great in last night’s episode. Lenard had some hilarious one liners which kept the show moving, however, they were just that one liners. And if anyone was underseved in last night’s episode it was Penny. I still love this show dearly but I do feel that because it’s becoming such a hit, partially do to Jim Parson’s amazing work as Sheldon, it’s morphed into the “Sheldon” show with the rest of the cast merely adding funny little punch lines to keep the plots going. I really hope they start giving Leonard and Penny’s characters more to do. I love this entire cast and just hope the change in the dynamic of the show isn’t causing any issues with the actors behind the scene.

Also, am I the only one that thinks Leonard and Penny have chemesitry? I think the two characters are adorable together.

    • Sarah

I too think Leonard and Penny have chemistry, it’s just a different type than what Penny and Sheldon have.

    • Sue1

I three think that they have wonderful chemistry. They are totally believable together, with genuine affection evident from the very beginning.

    • BT

Me four! I think they have great chemistry, I am not saying Sheldon and Penny don’t, as a matter of fact they do have great comedic comedy but no sexual chem.
Leonard and Penny have a special chemistry that I don’t see with Penny and Sheldon. I find Leonard and Penny to have chemistry in comedy and romance.
I do feel this show is becoming way too much about sheldon but he is a really quirky character and it is just easier to write funny things with him. I thought it gave Johnny some great one liners which he hasn’t had nearly enough of. He was really funny last night

      • Justin

I love Leonard and Penny together. They actually make sense together, unlike Sheldon and Penny. Penny + Sheldon = comedy but not romance.

  • Brian

I have the episode TiVo’d and am going to watch it tonight. So I’m compelled to ask, did two spoilers really have to appear in the teaser headline on cnn.com?

    • k

so why are you on the message boards if you don’t want to get spoiled?

      • Brian

I wasn’t on the message boards. I was on the home page and saw headline that said “Sheldon and Leonard get robbed and Sheldon moves to…Montana?” I came to the message board to say “wtf?”

  • john

Adam vary and Jim Parsons are both gay. Hence the over admeration. I think johnny Galecki is always great. Sheldon is become Fonzi. Too much is too much. I know what sheldon does before he does it.

    • whatwhat

You’re a guy and my ex is a guy. Hence the being an ignorant jerk?

  • Iron Man

It feels like the have dropped the geek aspect of Leonard. Instead of trying to give him something to do, they have just turned him into a bland everyman character. Plus, they have seemingly turned this into “The Sheldon Show,” but Sheldon was always great in small doses. Too much of him and I just feel like punching him in the face. That’s what kinda kills the show for me is knowing that in real life no one would be hanging out with Sheldon, and more than likely beating the crap out of him. Even if he is a fellow scientist, there is only so much Sheldon everyone can take.

    • coco

This is true, in real lfe no one would behanging out with Sheldon. I was in grad school with scientisit and peoplewould not talk to them ther than just saying hi/good morning/etc.
Also, somebody like Sheldon will be in the lab 24/7, it seems to me that he has too much time to “hang out”.

  • Garry

I agree with Iron Man and some of the other posts. I fear this show is becoming way too Sheldon-centric. For me, it works much better as an ensemble, without turning Sheldon into the lead character. I do like Penny and Leonard together, but I also agree that Leonard needs to return to his “geek” roots, so to speak, rather than just the straight-man for Sheldon.

I really hope this episode doesn’t signal a downward trend in the series as a whole, because I’ve loved it since the very first episode!

  • njm

Adam: Good episode. And I agree with you on leonard. He really annoys me….It’s when he always looks up when he talks. His head is always cocked.

  • Mike

Agree – Sheldon is like the parents in “Everybody Loves Raymond” – amusing on TV but in real life, Patricia Heaton would divorce Raymond to get away from them. NO ONE would live with Sheldon in real life but it is amusing on TV. However, as other posters note, taken to extremes, even for a comedy show, you just start wondering why no one punches out Sheldon (the whole Arctic summer hullabaloo is as close as we got to this). And the writers have forgotten that Leonard is a geek. I think more episodes with Penny trying to bring the four geeks into her world of other friends is rich with comic possibilities.

  • Jess

OMG! I know this is a little off topic but I just read that Johnny Galecki and Kaley Cuoco have been dating for over a year. Is this just a rumor? How have they kept this a secret? Hmmm, interesting considering everyone thinks their characters don’t have any chemistry.

    • Sue1

      Not everyone….

      • Anie

        …where did you read that?
because so far I don’t think Cuoco and Galecki made it public. So even if there are many hints pointing to that, it’s still only rumors.
…but I agree, they do have chemistry, it’s just different from Parsons and Cuoco.
        Back on topic:
last night episode was great! I laughed a lot. I loved the group together. I loved that they finally showed us Leonard and Penny together without fighting. I love that Sheldon was a bit crazy.
They only have like 20 minutes to fit everything in there so I think it’s really good!

      • Ann

Anie it was on the BBT message boards months ago. Apparently Simon Helberg outed them as a couple back in May in some radio interview. That is why I always find the “no chemistry” people hilarious. Apparently Cuoco and Galecki think they have enough chemistry to date IRL.

      • fany

Apparently Simon only said that Kaley was just closer to some people than others from the cast, and if you , this is actually true, she seems closer to Johnny and even closer to Jim. There was also a rumor about her and Jim because they “acted” like a couple in comicon and in some interviews, but also some people say he´s gay so… I won’t believe in those 3 rumors until someone actually confirms them
