You probably didn’t notice at the time, but a most momentous day for the human race occurred exactly nine years ago. I’m talking, of course, about the launch of Wikipedia on Jan. 15, 2001. (Thanks to The Awl for reminding us of this anniversary.)
I’m serious! The free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit is, was, and always will be an awesome source of instant information — though it’s better used as a starting point than a last word if you’re doing serious research. Better yet, Wikipedia has become an endless source of (very nerdy) entertainment in and of itself. I’ll confess to spending many an idle hour browsing through Wikipedia’s insanely detailed pages on Lord of the Rings characters, rappers from the ’90s, and musical categorizations. Sometimes, if I’m really bored, I just start at a random page and click around until I’m reading obscure details on, like, crustacean taxonomy. Please tell me I’m not the only person who does this.
How often do you consult Wikipedia? What’s your favorite page? Or are you one of those people who never reads Wikipedia at all? You’re missing out!

Yes..a great time killer! Yesterday I randomly was reading about monster trucks. ha. I’m not even a fan. I stumbled upon it somewhere among my Wiki travels.
I literally go to Wikipedia daily for various information…I especially like browsing Lostpedia, the Wikipedia database of information about the TV show, LOST.

I wish I had Wikipedia when I was in school instead of having to travel to the library to do my work. I would have been an A+ student.
cryptozoology has got to be one of the greatest topics on wiki. it has a list of crazy “cryptoids” and some have pictures! (my favorite is this furry whale that has like an elephant trunk?)
also great are marine creatures, or geology or mythical things like atlantis (which then led me to bermuda triangle, and a whole slew of other things i can’t even remember). needless to say, i got no work done that night. and no sleep.
I love the site. I will do the same thing you do. Start o;n one thing and end up on a topic that is so out there and random. I also appreciate the detailed pages on every comic book character from DC and Marvel

But the best is Wikipedia races…done with another person, you agree on a start page (say, “Dakota Fanning”) and an end page (“pencil”), and have to get there by only clicking links on the page. I do them with my sibs every once in awhile, love it!

Love Wikipedia. Total time killer. I go research one thing and when I leave I’m reading something so random…but it’s so interesting. I’m happy I’m not the only one who does this. Happy Birthday Buddy!
My husband had to teach library research methods to college freshmen. He would go onto Wikipedia and change names, dates, etc. on various pages to prove a point to the kids. He totally got banned by Wikipedia from making more edits.
