If you’re not a regular Cougar Town watcher and tuned in last night to see the much-advertised Courteney Cox-Lisa Kudrow (Valerie Cherish, I still miss you!) reunion, congratulations! You caught one helluva funny episode — and have hopefully added this gem to your “series recording” list. That said, while the erstwhile Friends were terrific (as anticipated) no one scored more laughs than Busy Philipps as clueless assistant Laurie. In fact, Philipps was so genius last night, I’ve got to break out her best zingers into their own “Top 6″ subset. Without further ado…
6. (Talking to conquest Smith Frank) “What? You have a last-name first name, and a first-name last name? Take me home right now!”
5. (Arguing that single women have it tougher than single men) “So much harder! Do you read Cathy?”
4. (Responding to a Good Will Hunting reference by Jules) “If Matt Damon weren’t married, and if he weren’t a movie star, and if he lived in this town, I really think we would date.”
3. (Shocked to hear the word “couth” used by a man) “Grayson, that is a word only women are allowed to use when they’re really angry with another woman!”
2. (Needs no explanation) “I swear, if I ever have a white baby, I am totally naming him Smith.”
1. (Complaining about having to wear a suit) “I feel like that lady that comes to your house every six months when you’re a kid and decides whether or not you get to keep living there.”
Oh, and let’s not forget Grayson’s “Political Parties 101″ class for Laurie, complete with chalkboard drawings of a donkey and an elephant.
Grayson: “Donkey likes hybrids, health care, and homosexuals. And elephant likes God.”
Laurie: “I saw an elephant pray at a circus once.”
Cox and Kudrow (as a vicious dermatologist with a superiority complex) had some awesome exchanges as well, none better than Jules getting short of breath after Dr. Evans aimed her she-beast laser at Jules’ profession: “Real estate’s what you do when you have no other options. You know, I guess it’s like being a stripper, except you get to see your face on a bus bench. Well, not this face, of course, the air-brushed version.” And then there was Dr. Evans showing up unexpectedly at Jules’ house, on the arm of Jules’ ex Bobby: “Hi Jules. Oh, you need more chardonnay! And better chardonnay.”
We also got treated to a bawdy, random moment when the guys dared Jules that any woman could cold-call any male stranger on the phone, offer to have sex with him, and get an automatic “yes.” Not surprisingly, the guys had it, but the twist was seeing Jules (who didn’t follow through with the offer, obvs) in bed later that day — next to her boyfriend — yet still offering the guy life advice: “Tom, I gotta call you back! Good luck with the interview!” Cougar Town (and its protagonist) may have sex on the brain, but its heart shows up at the most unexpected times and places, which is why it’s become my favorite new show of the season.
Oh, now before I turn it over to you to add your own favorite zingers in the comments section, let’s hear from the indomitable Barb, who (YES!) made a brief appearance in Dr. Evans’ lobby. Which of her lines made you chuckle more? “Welcome to the time machine, ladies! Which of the many fine doctors here are you seeing?” Or “See you in two days — when I emerge from my chrysalis!”?

Fine episode that juggled alot of characters withought feeling stuffed. I’m glad this show is better than how it was in the beginning
this episode proved that is ensemble is on fire! Even without Lisa, this was a fantastic ep. The proof to me at how great this show has become is I honestly wasn’t thinking I was watching Monica and Pheobe
I agree except for Jules’s ex-husband. Just can’t find him funny or likeable. But I am still loving this show!
totally disagree, the man is hilarious
I agree with Megan-he’s very funny.
I do really like this show and I have oddly be appreciated how they are trying to find a real position for Stan to be in (and yes, maybe just the responsible male role model for Travis). I also like how the time line of the show is always on the weekend and the whole storyline is wrapped up in that time frame.
interesting- i dont know why in my feeble brain I have not realized that the show takes place during the weekends, hence, travis never in school, nobody works etc. I learn something new every day. thanks!
Weekends are usually the busiest days for real estate agents. They would most likely not be lounging around. Not that it really matters for a comedy TV show.
Best episode so far. I was laughing hysterically all alone on my couch. Busy Philips is priceless in this part.
I really enjoyed all of the different “glassware” they were using at Bobby’s boat. “Can I get a refill of wine in my vase?” “I will be outside with my mustard jar”, etc.
I also laughed at the mustard jar comment! Loved it.
im surprised you didn’t mention travis’s arc with him learning about women I found that interesting
I am not a fan of jules’ boyfriend though
great episode busy phillips is great although i’ve known that since her role in dawsons creek way back then
She was great in Freaks and Geeks – first show I saw her in.
Actually, Laurie had no idea what couth meant and thought it was a vulgarity concerning female anatomy. Whoever did the old-age makeup for Lisa Kudrow was brilliant. She looked 20 years older than Cox. At least I hope it was makeup.
lol i dont think it was make up
That’s the most backhanded compliment I’ve ever read.
Bazinga!
Cox has admitted to having botox done but Lisa Kudrow hasn’t had it done.
Good for her i say.
Ouch!
Yea, don’t think that was makeup- and she may look older, but THAT IS WHAT A PERSON THEIR AGE LOOKS LIKE! Courtney had the work and Lisa didn’t.
Actually it is the opposite – Lisa Kudrow admits to having a lot of plastic surgery. Lisa Kudrow is older that Courtney Cox.
J.B.- false
When she asked what couth meant and Grayson said something like “not uncouth”, her reaction was even more hysterical.
She said something like, “If I don’t know what couth means, how would adding an ‘un’ in front of it help me out?”
I thought Lisa Kudrow actually looked really great. I think I’ve finally gotten used to Courteney Cox’s face work– at first it freaked me out (as do the later seasons of Friends), but for some reason CC looks better to me than ever. I don’t know if I just have gotten used to the works she’s had done, or if she’s easing off it. Anyway, I thought Lisa Kudrow looked fantastic!
I was actually saying to my girlfriend how good Kudrow was looking.
Can someone please help?! I’ve seen this show a few times but I’m confused about the relationships of everyone. Bobby is Jules’ ex and Dan is Jules’ son, but how does Jules know the hot bartender and Busy Phillips? Isn’t Busy a little young to be hanging out with these people? And how does Jules know Ellie? And why does Jules keep hanging out with her ex-husband?
I did laugh out loud when Busy smiled and horse-laughed like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman.
Busy Phillips works for Jules, and the hot bartender (Grayson) is Jules’ neighbour across the street. Ellie is also Jules’ next door neighbour.
God, I have missed Scott Foley doing comedy/Felicity-esque things. Can he please stay on this show forever? I LOVE HIM.
I totally second this thought. Scott Foley, yum! I miss Felicity so much I gave the season 1 dvd to someone for Christmas. Miss ya, Noel.
Scott Foley was so good in the ep – I agree that I hope he sticks around for a long time. If not, I hope he gets his own thing that allows him to be funny because he does that damn well. Loved the ep last night.
I agree. He really seemed to fit in to the little ensemble they’ve got going on that show. Jules’ dating of the young guys was starting to get a little creepy, despit the show’s title.
he works well with bill lawrence, loved scott on scrubs and him and jordan, oops i mean ellie, together were hilarious
I didn’t really understand how in the last episode Foley’s character was such a rude jerk but now he is nice and supportive with a few snide comments thrown in here or there.
Yeah, last night was tied with the Thanksgiving/ Christmas episodes for best one yet! I want more Lisa Kudrow guest starring! I too miss her on The Comeback; that show was hilarious… I’m sad it got cancelled. I hope Cougar Town doesn’t get cancelled!
I am so loving all these shout-outs for The Comeback! Seems like The Comeback and Cougar Town are quite popular with the Friends of Dorothy. I so so so wonder what Valerie Cherish would be doing now….
I liked the episode a lot but I didn’t think Lisa Kudrow really had anything to do with making it so good. I wanted to love her too.
I agree. I thought she was wasted in the part.
VERY funny episode –
I realize I’m a little late to this particular party, but I love Barb’s supernatural ability to just be wherever the action is, deliver a zinger, tuck the scene into her purse and go home.
yep thats pretty much how barb rolls. and its awesome!
exactly- it is better that her role is smaller cause it is more of a treat when she pops up. Even the way she said “chrysalis” cracked me up.
The woman does her comedy well, she is great on General Hospital as well.
that show is a comedy unto itself
My biggest fear is that the producers will do a “Barb episode”. American sitcoms always overdo things when they become popular. The best part about Barb is that she appears out of nowhere, delivers one killer line and leaves.
No to a Barb episode. I like that she pops in, kills a scene and leaves. (I especially like the popping out of nowhere part – it’s like magic.)
Barb also did the Geico commercial in the restaurant, flirting with that pile of money with googly eyes. Funny even then with no dialogue!
This was best ep so far and I was ROFLOL.
Lisa Kudrow has stated she doesn’t use Botox and was written into her her character. Line went “I don’t inject poisons in my face” while being a cosmetic doc.
I love the fast pace and quick lines. And no fake laughing! The chracters are more relatable and likeable than the some of the uptight, neurotic, and snooty “Friends”. It shows that there IS life after 35!
The women are not whiney as Rachel/Monica and guys are not self absorbed as Ross/Chandler. Though Bobby is like Joey and Laurie is Pheobe-ish [or female Joey?] and Joey were portayed sometimes.
Barb is great as a cameo, no need to make her into a ‘Fonzie’ or ‘Urkel’ and ruin show.
Oh, one more thing, keep Anniston and Schwimmer far from this show!
LK didn’t add anything to the episode, the part could have played by any other actor. Stunt casting but it was nice stunt casting.
Busy is gold on this show, her delivery of “I don’t think he was bi.” In the last episode was the best ever.
Love the show, here’s hoping for much Emmy love!
Actually i thought that the Friends connection between the two of them made it funnier, in a meta kind of way.
Still not finding this show very funny…
I agree. I saw an episode early on and watched last night (due to the LK spot)- not impressed with the show. Perhaps because I had just watched Modern Family….
