I’m definitely not the only one who, upon hearing the word “Yemen,” first thinks not of what is going on in the news but of that Friends episode in which Chandler had to pretend he was moving to Yemen to get rid of Janice. Right? And that’s okay, right? Right.
Related: Seinfeld fans are also one step ahead of the general populace because they already know that Burma is the same as Myanmar, should that ever come up. Thanks for all the cultural awareness, NBC in the ’90s!
For more Yemeni pop culture fun, watch Stephen Colbert explain why we’re talking about Yemen in the first of The Colbert Report‘s unlimited-part series, Better Know an Enemy, below.
I could watch that man randomly bring Snoopy into the discussion (I love how he starts drawing at the bottom of Snoopy’s ear!) all day. Actually, now that this video is on my computer’s default homepage, I just might. Make it happen, Barrett!

I hear ya Annie,
To be honest, all I know about the Ukraine, is that “the Ukraine is weak!” based on the episode where Kramer and Newman are playing Risk on the subway in front of that angry guy from the Ukraine.
I am so glad I am not the only one.
Thanks for this, Annie. You always make me smile!
Agreed! I immediately thought of Friends when I first heard the news…
Heh. As did I!
I always hear Janice’s voice saying “123 Yemen Road, Yemen” whenever the country is mentioned. Thanks, Friends.
LOL!! “123 Yemen Road, Yemen”. Forgot about that!!
ME TOO!! It’s good not to be alone!!
Love the show too!
Hate to be d-baggish, but it’s 1 Yemen Road.
Oy, open an atlas on occasion.
I also think of Chandler every time I hear something about Yemen, freak
I do as well. I think about how his address in Yemen was something like 123 Yemen Street, Yemen City, Yemen. Oh Chandler Bing.
I always think of Chandler’s address: 15 Yemen Road, Yemen.
I’m with you. I still love my Bing-a-ling!
I think of Chandler too!
Similarly, on The Daily Show the other night, they included the phrase “By Yemen” as a jingle to one of their segments. Of course Seinfeld fans would sing: “Co-stanza!”
I’m with you Annie, I could watch Colbert do anything. Love that guy!
This is why I love Annie Barrett. She just gets me.
I *ALWAYS* think of that Friends episode whenever I hear Yemen, even though I do know geography and know more things about it than that. But I’ve seen that ep probably about 10 times, so of course I’m going to think of it.
totally agree!
Yes!! I can’t help but say “15 Yemen Road, Yemen.”
“Ah good one. And Yemen! That actually sounds like a real country.”
It was the first thing I thought of too, but my mind remembers it as “One Yemen Way, Yemen.”
Yes, and I always say that in Janice’s voice.
“Ah, sir a ticket to Yemen is $2,100…and we don’t take library cards.”
“When we get to Yemen, can I stay at your house?”
Ha! How much would I love to see some lost episode detailing Chandler’s adventures in Yemen.
I think of Chandler second, after I think of Eddie Izzard, who was born in Yemen. Of course, I think of most people after I think of Eddie Izzard, because he is AWESOME. Finally: “Cameltoe” = genious. Love this entire clip!
Definitely, my first thought was of Chandler, too. I watch way too much tv.
How can you not think of Chandler when you hear Yemen? It’s the first thing that pops into my head!
I do the same thing. Every time I hear something about Yemen on the news I scream, “I’m going to YEMEN! When we get to Yemen can I live with you?”
YES!! OMG! the exact same line comes to my mind everytime, I thought I was the only one!!!
I’m glad I’m not alone. I think the same thing
Whenever I hear any mention of Yemen, my first thought immediately goes to Chandler. Thank you for making me feel sane.
