Carrie Underwood on 'How I Met Your Mother': Verdict?

Carrie Underwood joins the ranks of Rachel Bilson and Stacy Keibler with a guest appearance on How I Met Your Mother later this year, according to People. She’s set to play “an enigmatic pharmaceutical sales rep and love interest for Ted.”

I’m neutral on Carrie Underwood, and HIMYM has been pretty good at figuring out what to do with its guest stars, so I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt. But man, this show does not need a storyline that pulls Ted away from the rest of the group. The best episodes of HIMYM always involve everyone, though Marshall or Barney sidestories can support themselves once in a while. Ted-only plots, on the other hand — his teaching, Stella, the repeat blind date, etc. — don’t work as well, plus they tend to make our ostensible hero into a total herb.

What do you think, PopWatchers? Is the American Idol a natural fit for MacLaren’s?

    :( This makes me sad

    “an enigmatic pharmaceutical sales rep”?!

    Is there any other kind?

i agree.. i don’t like story lines that pull ted away from the group. the repeat date was once of my least favorite episodes- such an obviously filler episode that did not advance the story line at all. i don’t really like guest stars on this show.. i think because the characters feel so real otherwise that it throws me off.

It doesn’t matter. This is one of the best shows on TV. I don’t watch the show foe the guest stars anyway. I do agree about the “Ted only” story lines. The “Last cigarette ever” episode was one of the funniest ever!

But bringing in a love interest doesn’t necessarily mean that Ted will be off by himself. The Joanna Garcia episode was actually a really entertaining episode, I thought, and one that used the rest of the cast pretty well.

  • Ted

    Epic fail.

Meh. I used to love this show, but it has really failed to interest me this year. I kind of feel like they’re half-assing it.

I think its doing an okay job so far, but I think its back half is going to be much better.

  • Hmm

Isn’t it sad that the show is supposed to be about Ted and his quest for his wife but his solo stories pull the show down and are pretty boring. Ted is much better as a side kick.

I know. Ted is my least favorite character. Love them all, he’s just my least favorite.

Carrie U is so wooden before the camera doing anything other than singing that this cannot be good.

Yeah, it’s strange, Ted has to be one of the most unnecessary lead characters ever. I think of Johnny Galecki in The Big Bang Theory and how he is the sanest one of his group. Yet he pulls it off. I don’t know if it’s Ted’s character or the guy who plays him(I can’t even remember his name and he’s the STAR of the show).

I disagree with you about the Ted-centric episodes. I think the show is at its best when it follows that core story — it is the title of the show after all. The rest of the cast are great as supporting characters, but tend to drag when the become the focus of an episode.

Hopefully Carrie U is a better actress than Britney.

I feel like HIMYM is pulling a lot stunt casting and it’s not really adding anything to the show. I agree with a previous a comment, this season feels very half-assed.

Sounds fun to me!!!! Can’t wait to see the show.

Why Carrie Underwood? This is going to be awful!!! Did they see her Xmas special? Her skits were soo bad! She can sing but she CANNOT act. Plus, her and Ted? Casting dropped the ball here big time!

I know! I watched part of it because since it was on Fox, I was hoping that the cast of Glee would guest star. They didn’t and I don’t know if they could have helped.

I really can’t stand Carrie Underwood, and I REALLY don’t understand why they must use non-actresses as guest stars…but I also trust HIMYM, and I’ll watch anyway. It just seems like the network makes the HIMYM producers use stars that probably aren’t a huge draw for HIMYM’s audience.
