'From Paris With Love' trailer: John Travolta, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and an '80s voiceover

Filed under: Movies and tagged: ,

A new trailer for Pierre Morel’s From Paris With Love (in theaters Feb. 5) has debuted, and it plays like a lost ’80s action film. An embassy worker (The TudorsJonathan Rhys Meyers) and a FBI agent named Charlie Wax (John Travolta) team up to stop a terrorist attack in Paris. “The risk has never been greater,” the voiceover says, “but our last line of defense is also our best.”

The first time you watch it, you might not be able to take your eyes off of Travolta’s bad-ass bald head. The second time, you might think Hey, the window that guy jumps out of kinda looks like the one in Hitman. The third time, you might freeze frame at :58 and note that Travolta’s hoop earring has little stars on it. (I have a semi-serious urge to phone the costume designer to find out why.) And the fourth time, you might consider seeing the movie just so you can decide whether Travolta actually knows how kitschy lines like “That’s how I do things”,  ”Did I say we were done?”, and “Tell me that wasn’t some impressive [cut to him shooting two guns]” actually sound. (Broken Arrow really did a number on me.) What’s your gut tell you?

It looks like great fun. I love Jonathan Rhys Meyers and can’t wait to see him in a different kind of role.

Alright, a new JRM movie. Looks like he and Travolta make a good team

  • Big Fan

I second the love of Jonathan Rhys Meyers. I’ll see the movie for him

      Me too!

John Travolta looks absolutely bad-ass with his baldie! here’s hoping he puts on a dress again for Hairspray 2…

I saw the preview before Sherlock Holmes and said to my sister….’I don’t have a clue what that movie is about, but I’ll probably see it.’ I have much love for both JRM and John Travolta.

Really?? I saw this trailer over the weekend and the immediate reaction was “epic fail!”

    • Taylor

      Agreed. It looks horrible.

      This doesn’t look promising.

Take one indie/arthouse favorite actor looking for some exposure outside his usual costume drama niche, add a once-cool, now hopelessly cheesy megastar looking to get his mojo back, combine with a French action director whose last film was good only b/c of the considerable talent of Liam Neeson, and you get an absurd mess of a film that’s not going to do either actor any favors.

The first preview I saw for this totally made it look like a comedy. This one totally makes it look like an action-thriller. WTF?

    • dave

Oh and it made JRM look like the main character too, not Travolta. Go find it and watch it, so weird.

  • Arse

Seriously, I thought this was about JRM’s character and his relationship with his girlfriend?!?!

Hard to say why Taken worked but it did. I think Morel has style. If FPWL works it will be because of the chemistry of Travolta and JRM — who are two of my favorite actors. This trailer doesn’t show it but an early red band trailer showed a lot of promise and interesting plot twists. I see this as a fun evolution of the buddy cop genre and I’m looking forward to it.

I think Rhys Meyers storyline is the main one but Travolta is obviously better known so they are promoting on that

After a long day a work, I look forward to chillin’ and enjoying this film. Love both actors, and honestly… I enjoy the simple “die hardish” action films!

I love Jonathan Rhys Meyers.. Can’t wait to see John Travolta’s bald head. Can’t wait.!
