POLL: Which Nancy Meyers movie house would you want to live in?

Categories: Movies

If you left It’s Complicated thinking you’d like to own the house Meryl Streep’s character lives in, you’re not alone. It’s a common reaction to any film directed and/or written by Nancy Meyers. Personally, I’m still hoping to end up in a Vermont home similar to Diane Keaton’s in 1987′s Baby Boom (and with a vet) and vacation annually at Keaton’s Hamptons beach house in Something’s Gotta Give and Kate Winslet’s English cottage in The Holiday. In a recent must-read New York Times Magazine profile, Meyers, who believes a home and its furnishings can develop a character, also explains her heroines’ exquisite and expensive taste as “appealing. It softens the message.” Times writer Daphne Merkin then has to ask: Does that “softening the message” ultimately weaken her films?

Jeanine Basinger, chairwoman of the film-studies department at Wesleyan University, tells the Times that Meyers’ films don’t require that you think about them after the credits roll: “She makes it easy for the actors and the audience…. They can slip into their parts and be happy, and we can slip into our seats and be happy.” I don’t think whether or not I can afford on-screen linens determines if a movie stays with me. Baby Boom is burned into my memory because I’m a single city girl who wonders if she should slow down and move to the country, and The Holiday because I fantasize about having the cojones to take an extended solo vacation and make a new reality for myself for two weeks. I enjoyed It’s Complicated, but because I’m not a divorcée, I’m not going to spend time thinking what if. But since I am currently thinking that I really would have liked to have seen Streep’s completed renovation, let’s take a poll: Which Nancy Meyers movie house would you most like to live in? Vote after the jump.

P.S. I’d ask you to weigh in on the “softening the message” debate, but honestly, wouldn’t you be pissed if you saw a Nancy Meyers romantic comedy at this point that didn’t have a house you coveted? Or would you rather see another Private Benjamin and Protocol from her?

P.P.S. Not a joke there. I do love Protocol. READ FULL STORY »

Robert Downey Jr. and Johnny Depp: How would you get 'em together on screen?

Categories: Movies

As we were leaving Sherlock Holmes yesterday, I asked my 62-year-old mother how awesome it would be to see Robert Downey Jr. star in a movie with Johnny Depp. Her response — “I would need a tranquilizer” — wasn’t exactly a surprise. She enjoyed Sherlock Holmes and Johnny Depp’s recent Sexiest Man Alive People cover equally. But it does show the kind of massive appeal a film costarring Downey and Depp would have. So, PopWatchers, let’s pitch us some plots…

I would love to see them play two eccentric actors who get caught up in some sort of real-life espionage. (Knowing that my mother shares my love for the 1987 Shelley Long-Better Midler classic Outrageous Fortune, I’m confident she’d second this.) Though it’s tempting to give them a bromance à la Holmes and Watson, they should initially hate each other à la Tango and Cash (another reference that I’m sure would appeal to the duo). Part of me wants it to be a period film, which would give Downey and Depp even more room to play; part of me wants it set today, but penned by Steve Martin with the heightened reality of Roxanne and LA Story.

So to recap: I’m pitching Outrageous Fortune meets Tango & Cash and Roxanne, possibly in period garb.

Your turn. What’s your dream project for Downey and Depp?

Clip du Jour: 'I Say Fever'

Categories: Clip du Jour, Music

Stefan Nadelman won a Sundance prize for his amazing 2003 short film Terminal Bar (trailer here ). Now he offers this amazing music video for “I Say Fever” by Ramona Falls. Beautiful work, and I’m not just saying that ’cause I always like seeing animal heads on human bodies. (Hat tip: Filmmaker.)

Kevin Smith's 'Cop Out' trailer: what do you think?

By now you’ve read all about the title change for Kevin Smith’s new movie. But have you seen the trailer? Here it is, embedded below. Looks pretty hilarious to me (just the sight of Tracy Morgan stuffing those tortilla chips in his mouth had me laughing.) What do you think? Is Cop Out going to be brilliant or the next Jersey Girl?

Which TV shows has your family forced on you this holiday weekend?

Every time I visit my parents, it seems like they’ve got some strange new TV pick. I guess I should be glad they don’t watch boring CBS dramas or something. The latest find is Pawn Stars on The History Channel, which I’ve now watched several times over Christmas Weekend. I don’t know that I’m completely sold (pun intended), but I do like the shop jester Chumlee.

What about you — what shows have your parents/siblings/kids forced you to watch over the holiday weekend? Did you discover any new gems OR did you suffer through any horrible shows you’ll never watch again?

Tell all in the comments. And any other Pawn Stars fans out there?

Today's holiday TV picks: 'Law & Order: SVU,' 'Three Sheets,' 'The Sound of Music'

It’s Sunday of the long holiday weekend — you’re either sick of watching TV and need to get out of the house, or sick of your family and need to distract yourself with anything on the tube.

Tune into USA starting at 9 a.m. for a marathon of Law & Order: SVU. You can never have too much Benson & Stabler.

Fine Living has Three Sheets: New Year’s Eve in London on at 10 p.m. — I love watching Zane Lamprey’s bar crawls and London’s pubs should provide plenty of entertainment for him. Now pass me a pint of cider…

And — the absolute perfect ending to the long holiday weekend — gather everyone around for The Sound of Music at 7 p.m. on ABC. “So long, farewell, I hate to go and leave this pretty sight…”

What are you watching today? And what’s your favorite Sound of Music song — “My Favorite Things,” “Edelweiss,” “Maria,” etc.? I’m a sucker for “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” myself.

Clip du Jour: Be careful what you wish for, kiddies!

Did you get that one special gift you really, really wanted for Christmas? If not—well, it could be worse. Check out Alma, a short animated film by an up-and-coming Spanish director named Rodrigo Blaas, to see why. Like a Pixar short crossed with a Twilight Zone episode, Alma—which has garnered acclaim at various film festivals—spins a haunting fable about a cute young girl who sees a doll in a shop window, falls in love with it, and goes in and tries to get it—only to…

Well, just watch it for yourself for a little holiday chill—and when you’re done, feel free to share your worst Christmas-present or toy-related nightmare in the comments.

'Chipmunks': How do parents cope?

When I was 4 or 5, I had a portable record player and a favorite record — Christmas with the Chipmunks — and I seem to remember my dad hated it so much, he hid the album from me. In the interest of investigative journalism, I asked dad about this last night, and he said ”doesn’t remember” doing such a thing, but it could be possible since those singing chipmunks made his ears bleed. (UPDATE: Dad now says my grandfather hated it more than anyone, so if hidden, it was for grandpa’s sake.)

Here is one of the songs I remember fondly (I can understand now why my dad didn’t want to listen to this on repeat):

So, parents of Chipmunk lovers, how do you cope? Has anyone seen Alvin & The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel yet? Is it bearable for adults? (EW’s Owen Gleiberman gave it a C-.)

Anyone want to sound off if the Chipmunks are more or less annoying than Barney or High School Musical? Or kids remembering what pop culture properties your parents hated when you were growing up? (That Alvin album is still missing in the Mitchell household, I think!)
