'Boy' trailer: Michael Jackson love and indie spirit collide

The little New Zealand-set gem Boy — yes, it’s the kind of film we can call a little gem based only on the minute and 16 seconds we’ve seen in the just-released trailer — will premiere at Sundance next month full of whimsy and Michael Jackson nostalgia. The coming-of-age comedy looks appropriately adorable, touching, and quirky, but what’s really interesting is the Michael Jackson-mania-driven plot. Set in 1984, it seems to capture the way everything we did that year (especially those of us around 10 years old) was steeped in MJ fever. Who knows how such a plot would’ve played a year ago, but now, of course, couldn’t be a more perfect time for it:

'Taking the Stage' season 2 trailer: Encore!

Earlier this year I became obsessed with the MTV series Taking the Stage, approximately a real-life Fame filmed at a performing arts high school in Cincinnati. To my enormous delight, season two begins in a few shorts weeks, and no joke, it is marked on my calendar.

Is it tough to take a show seriously when its dramatic/romantic lead says without a molecule irony, "I came here because I want to dance"? I guess it could be, but that's what makes this show awesome: The people on it are legitimately talented and actually care about things. It's the opposite of celebreality, and I love it.

Are you as excited for this show's return as I am, PopWatchers?

New 'Inception' trailer: Watch it here!

Categories: Movie Trailers

Assuming there’s any of your mind left to blow post-Avatar, the newest trailer for next summer’s IMAX thriller Inception would seem to imply that director Christopher Nolan is seeking to do just that. This short but enticing clip features Leonardo DiCaprio and Ellen Page staring intently at objects and architecture, mostly with somewhat cataclysmic results. Still unclear on plot — although Page’s voice pleading “Wake me up!” would seem to indicate it’s all a dream — but for those looking to gnaw on some sweet visuals, this should be a tasty treat.

Which 2009 movie most deserves a sequel? Hint: It has half-naked blue people in it!

Categories: Avatar, Made Us Think, Movies

December 2009 still has a little life left in it, but some folks are already thinking about 2010: the folks over at MovieTickets.com asked 32,000 moviegoers which 2009 movie most deserves a sequel and The Hangover won with 37% of the vote. Now, I loved The Hangover, but I think that flick should stay single—no need for a companion film (even if it’s already in the works). My choice for the film most deserving of a sequel would be Avatar, one of the most dazzling and physically beautiful movies I’ve seen in a while. READ FULL STORY »

TV catch up: 'Community' mini-marathon tonight

Categories: Community, Television

This evening, NBC is giving Community a four-episode mini-marathon from 8 to 10 p.m. ET. Not every episode of this freshman comedy is a home run, but the cast is so likable, I’m willing to wait for it to hit its stride. (Speaking of that, you can now watch Parks and Recreation‘s entire second season-to-date on Hulu.) If your usual program is in repeats, and chances are that it is, give Community a try tonight. At least at 8:30 p.m. for the Halloween episode…

P.S. I’m finally ready to give The Big Bang Theory a chance, CBS. So feel free to host a mini-marathon of that whenever. I’ll be taping the repeat with guest star Summer Glau tonight at 9:30 p.m. ET.

Holy every 'holy' expression, Batman!

Categories: Misc.

Holy unrefillable prescriptions! This supercut of Robin’s “holy” exclamations from Batman is funny but also a little strange: Was TV really this wholesome? Wowzers.

I can’t hear all these goofy non-curses without thinking of the late, great Middleman, which gets its own supercut below: READ FULL STORY »

Tyra Banks ending her talk show: Who should fill her shoes?

With today’s sad news that Tyra Banks will shut down production on her titular talk show in spring 2010, I found myself going through various stages of grief. First, I was sad. Next, I thought about my lunch. Then, I began wondering who could follow in TyTy’s footsteps, seeing how the former model’s chat show is one of the few daytime talkers still aimed at a young, female demographic. (Banks was not immediately available to talk about her post-Tyra Show plans.)

And then, it came to me: Alexa Chung! My favorite former MTV employee is fresh, smart, and obvs available, and she has tons of television experience. Plus, she’s a woman who comes across as incredibly natural and honest, a trait that helped Banks connect so strongly with audiences. It’s settled: Chung is my top choice to inherit Banks’ vagina puppet.

What do you think, PopWatchers? Who should follow in Banks’ footsteps? Is Alexa Chung right for the job? List your candidates in the comments section below.

Gadget Grab: Touch-screen gloves

Cold weather and touch screens: What’s a geek to do when hobo-chic fingerless gloves don’t seem appealing? (Which is always!) There are a few options that keep you both wired and frostbite-free:

Buy a pair of capacitive gloves There are many options, from the relatively cheap and sporty to the super expensive and fashionable. They work…okay.

Make your current handwarmers touch-screen friendly This is a project for crafty geeks only, but it’s pretty straightforward. Buy some conductive thread and sew a spot onto the fingertips of your gloves or mittens. It’s not as accurate as bare skin, but think of the DIY satisfaction!

Use your nose I couldn’t resist: This is my favorite stupid iPhone trick. If you just need to answer a call or open an app, your schnozz works just as well as a finger. Sorry, ski mask wearers.

Major upsets on the American Kennel Club's list of Top 125 Dogs in Pop Culture

Categories: Animals, Whining

In celebration of its 125th anniversary, the American Kennel Club joined forces with PawNation.com to ask the public’s help in ranking its nominations for the top 125 dogs in pop culture. You can download the full list here. Not surprisingly, Snoopy came in at No. 1. But what the heck is The Wizard of Oz‘s Toto doing down at No. 24?! That’s below the painting “Dogs Playing Poker” (No. 6), the song “Who Let the Dogs Out?” (No. 9) and the Taco Bell Dog (No. 19). NOTE: I am fine with The Dukes of Hazzard‘s Flash (No. 14) besting Toto. Possibly because on Christmas morning, I opened up a Dukes of Hazzard TV dinner tray like the one I had when I was a kid and cried. So yes, I get that this list is subjective.

But back to the whining! How can Sandy from Annie be all the way down at No. 79? That’s below Air Bud (No. 49), Paris Hilton’s Tinker Bell (No. 59), and Beverly Hills Chihuahua (No. 63).

Peruse the list and tell us how it looks to you. Word to the wise: You’ll think that Hooch from Turner & Hooch was snubbed, and you’ll be shocked by how appalled you are. But he goes by Beasley and comes in at No. 26. Breathe. After the jump, the Top 10. READ FULL STORY »

Clip du jour: 'Battlestar Rhapsody'

Battlestar Galactica and Queen, together at last! Gods, I miss this show. Next up, Internet, please bring me some kind of Friday Night Lights/Magnetic Fields video. Two great tastes that taste great together! BSG is just one of our dearly departed shows of ’09, but this video reminds me that while shows may end, creative fandom never will.
