There cannot be enough Timothy Olyphant on my computer screen

I have high hopes of watching Deadwood in its entirety on DVD over Christmas, but two trailers have re-piqued my Timothy Olyphant obsession a bit ahead of schedule. Apple has released the first trailer for The Crazies, which is both a reminder that cell phones in horror movies never, ever work and the second-freakiest movie trailer to feature a deadly car wash in 2009. Press play below.

And! Cinema Blend has the official trailer for Olyphant’s upcoming FX series. It used to be called Lawman, but now that Steven Seagal is a lawman, it’s called Justified instead. Olyphant plays U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, “a modern day 19th century-style lawman.” My god can that man can wear a cowboy hat. (….in bed!) Read about why Ken Tucker’s looking forward to Justified over at Watching TV.

Anyone who agrees with the title of this post, say “I’ll be the f—ing sheriff!”

'Sherlock Holmes' clips: Mustaches and banter, please!

Holy crap, there are a lot of Sherlock Holmes clips online. This one is my favorite:

What is our verdict on Jude Law’s mustache, PopWatchers? I’m usually against all forms ‘stache, but somehow this works for me. Maybe it’s the homoerotic tension, maybe it’s the old-timey costuming, or maybe it’s just the outrageous panache radiating off both Law and Robert Downey Jr. Whatever it is, I am buying what those guys are selling. Which is I guess tickets to a movie.

The sheer volume of material online at this point could be enough to sour would-be viewers, but compared to the more action-oriented trailers, these clips present a convincing case that the movie includes lots and lots of clever dialogue.  Banter FTW! I would way rather watch Holmes and Watson chit chat than punch people.

Do these clips spoil Holmes for you, PopWatchers? Where do you fall on the words/fists/explosions preference continuum?

Couch potatoes rule! New study shows Americans rate TV as top form of entertainment

According to today’s Hollywood Reporter, something called “Deloitte’s fourth annual State of the Media Democracy report” reveals that 34 percent of Americans rate TV as their favorite medium (up from 27 percent last year), with 71 percent listing it in their top three. Second place went to the Internets; third to music; and fourth to books. Meanwhile, only 22 percent of those polled cited going to the movies as their preferred form of entertainment. 'True Blood' castings fill me with hope

It’s been a busy casting week for True Blood, and it all seems like good news from where I’m watching: Alfre Woodard as Lafayette’s mom? Awesome. James Frain Tara’s vampire lovaaaah? Sure, let’s do it. A beautiful model as Eric’s new sexytimes buddy? My cup runneth over! You know, with vampire blood.

True Blood is its best when everyone has a meaty, long-term storyline going — otherwise, it’s just Sookie and Bill (I mean “Suhkieh” and “Beeyul”) out-drawling each other. Tara is way overdue for some pulpy, non-Marianne fun, and a creepy love interest might be just the thing…especially for those of us who were not Team Eggs. We already know about Tara, Jason, and Sookie’s childhoods, but our favorite line cook’s background hasn’t gotten the same attention. And any time there’s an opportunity for Eric to smolder or writhe, I will be first in line.

Which supporting character deserves more screen time this season, PopWatchers? I’m going to say Eric, because I have eyeballs, but I’ll put Lafayette as a close second.

Clip du jour: Geography supercut

It could be edited a lot faster, but this supercut of 114 countries mentioned in 100 movies is still pretty fun. (It also contains some NSFW language.)

Clueless and The Last King of Scotland, together at last! What clip surprised you, PopWatchers?

Guilty Pleasures Semifinals: 'Surreal Life' vs. 'Kardashians'

We’re in the Semifinals of our Guilty Pleasures Reality TV Showdown (see full bracket here). Now we’re into the Celeb-Reality category.

Semifinals, Celeb-Reality: The Surreal Life vs. Keeping up with the Kardashians

The Surreal Life Keeping Up With The Kardashians

Here’s what some fans had to say during the first round of voting:

Ailene on Keeping up with the Kardashians: “Yes, they have no real reason to be on tv, but they’re entertaining.”

Remy on The Surreal Life: “It led to VH1’s entire line-up for most of the decade – it spawned Celeb-reality. Especially in the earlier seasons, the show was just plain addicting to watch the drama unfold.”

Relive some classic moments on video — and vote — after the jump. READ FULL STORY »

Stand-up comic Justin Timberlake announces Golden Globe noms

If you skipped today’s Golden Globe Awards nominations telecast (and opted to read our full lists of TV and movie nominees instead), you missed Justin Timberlake’s early-morning foray into stand-up comedy. After announcing Emily Blunt’s dramatic actress nomination for The Young Victoria, Timberlake shouted “Ho, ho, ho! Somebody’s gonna have a good night tonight!” to Blunt’s fiancé and fellow besuited nom-announcer John Krasinski. JT then made a drum roll sound effect after the word “DRAMA!” and said, “Thank you; that was an impromptu drum roll.” OH REALLY? Enjoy.

First 'Robin Hood' trailer: Prince of Badassery

The first trailer for the Ridley Scott-Russell Crowe take on Robin Hood is out, and it’s exactly what you’d expect (in a good way) — Robin Hood-goes-Gladiator:

Is it me, or is this the cool-making filmic makeover Robin Hood has been praying for ever since he went all sappy back in 1991 with Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves? Or did that darn “(Everything I Do) I Do It for You” song cloud my entire memory of that movie? At any rate, I’m guessing there won’t be any Bryan Adams ballads mucking up this one. (Not that I didn’t swoon over that at the time like every other female between the ages of 16 and 100.) What do you think, PopWatchers? Are you psyched for a new leader of the Merry Men, or does this trailer have you missing Kevin Costner in his tights-wearing days?

'Friday Night Lights,' 'Lost,' 'Glee'...Are the Writers Guild Awards our dream come true?

I feel a little like the Writers Guild Award nominees, announced yesterday, were downloaded directly from my own brain. Or at least my DVR list. And knowing what I know about what shows PopWatchers tend to get all message-boardy about, I’m guessing you feel the same. There in the drama category are Breaking Bad, Dexter, Friday Night Lights (pictured), Lost, and Mad Men. In comedy we have 30 Rock, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Glee, Modern Family, and The Office. And as if all that weren’t enough, we have the new series category: Glee, Modern Family, The Good Wife, Nurse Jackie, and Hung. First and foremost, I’m thrilled when any awards are smart enough to recognize the brilliance that is Friday Night Lights — a show that, by premise, could’ve been lame at best, but instead manages to wring tearful drama from grounded-in-reality situations every week that it hangs on despite its ratings challenges. I’m also thrilled when any awards are smart enough to get Lost, as well, which basically does the opposite — makes utterly ridiculous, barely comprehensible plotlines hit us in the heart (oh, Sawyer and Juliet!) despite their reliance on string theory. It’s nice to see Glee up for its first big awards, too — it’s just plain not easy to write a musical every freaking week and make it work, and while the dialogue and plotting occasionally gets heavy-handed, it still works — and ditto for Modern Family, the funniest new show this season. (Love 30 Rock and Mad Men, too, but even the Emmys have been onto those for a while.)

I’m a writing-first kind of TV watcher, so it makes sense that I’d like this list. (The awards, by the way, will be given out Feb. 20.) But what’s missing? How I Met Your Mother is the only one I can think of off my own DVR list — what do you think, PopWatchers? Was Grey’s Anatomy good enough? Did Gossip Girl hold up for you? Did FlashForward get dissed?

'The Runaways': Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning look rock 'n roll

Categories: Movies

The Runaways, the Kristen Stewart-starring Joan Jett biopic, will premiere next month at Sundance, but we’re getting our first official look at Stewart and costar Dakota Fanning now. Stewart appears appropriately badass and, wearing makeup that was missing from all the paparazzi shots taken during filming, manages to pull off that ’70s hair. I’m going to see the movie just to find out why her leather pants are unzipped.

Fanning looks… well, nearly unrecognizable as Runaways band mate Cherie Currie. After seeing this image, whose performance are you looking forward to more? We all know Fanning is a great actress. But can she rock? Now, I’m curious…
