'SYTYCD' exit interview: Jakob talks about almost winning

Though he barely received any airtime prior to landing a spot in the top 20 of So You Think You Can Dance, Jakob Karr climbed his way into our hearts—and into the top two. Here, the most technically advanced dancer of the season talks to EW about partner Ashleigh, staying uninjured and being this close to the win.

You got so close, Jakob. So close. But you know what? I’m so happy for Russell, and I’m really feeling great.

Did you think you would win, or did you think Russell had it in the bag? As it started to get closer to the finale, I had a feeling it would come down between the two of us. No matter what, I knew that whatever happened was happening because that’s what was meant to be. I couldn’t be happier, and it was an amazing experience. READ FULL STORY »

MTV: Guilty-pleasure wasteland or socially redeeming network? Or both?

MTV has a split-personality problem. When I turn it on, I never know which network I’m going to get: The sweet, socially conscious one that has brought me True Life, 16 and Pregnant, and those news specials Gideon Yago used to do? Or the bastion of vapidness known for The Hills, Jersey Shore, and hours of bafflingly watchable Spring Break coverage? Its new docu-series, The Buried Life — which premieres Jan. 18 — may just be the perfect blend of both. In it, four adorable, well-intentioned young guys travel across the country in a bus aiming to cross off stuff on their Bucket Lists; and for each one they do, they also help a stranger cross off one item on his or her own. I loved the life-affirming concept as soon as I heard it — especially as 2009 continues to kick our collective national ass. And having watched the first episode, I can attest that it is both endearing (the boys buy a computer for a needy school) and mischievous (the boys work out an elaborate plan to sneak into the Playboy Mansion, complete with a giant cake, oompa-loompa costumes, and an impersonation of soccer star Christiano Ronaldo). Of course, I doubt it will assault pop culture on the same level as Jersey Shore, since its unlikely to incite protests, scare advertisers, or inspire clever web applications. My question: Will you watch anyway? Please?

'So You Think You Can Dance' exit interview: Ashleigh Di Lello on dancing with her husband, favorite numbers, and her controversial injury

She may not have won the competition on So You Think You Can Dance, but Ashleigh Di Lello won a chance to do something she’d been hoping to do all season: dance with her husband, Ryan. Shortly after learning of her fifth-place finish, the ballroom dancer — who met with controversy one week ago after being allowed to stay in the competition following an injury — talked to EW about dancing with her hubby on national television, operating outside of her comfort zone, and the frustration of getting sidelined.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: So, fifth place. Not too shabby, right? Is that how you expected to place?
ASHLEIGH DI LELLO: I didn’t go in with any expectations, to be honest. All six of us had talked about how it could go any way and every week it was always a surprise. We were expecting the unexpected. Up until that week, I had never been in the bottom and every week depends on so many factors, the numbers that you do, really anything. I just went in and danced the best I could in the finale. Making the finale was the greatest thing that Ryan and I could have done together and after that everything would have been just icing on the cake. I made the finale, that’s all I could have asked for. READ FULL STORY »

What's your favorite 'SNL' holiday sketch?

On last night’s The New Adventures of Old Christine, Molly Shannon guest-starred as a kooky neighbor lady who looooooves to drink. With Shannon, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and former featured player Michaela Watkins sharing the screen, the episode was like a mini Saturday Night Live “reunion” of ladies who were never on it at the same time. Anyway, watching Molly deck the halls (and later almost deck Christine) reminded me how excited I am to see some older SNL sketches — like NPR’s The Delicious Dish in tonight’s two-hour special, “A Very Gilly Christmas.” My mouth’s watering just thinking about those balls.

We know the “Schweddy Balls” episode of Delicious Dish will run during tonight’s two-hour SNL special, “A Very Gilly Christmas,” because Alec Baldwin will be there to introduce it. Steve Martin will also be on hand for “A Holiday Wish.” We’re also hoping for singing duo the Sweeney Sisters (Jan Hooks and Nora Dunn) to make a comeback in 2009. Too bad you can’t watch that anywhere online, but WOW are there tons of hilarious-iced-with-sad imitations on YouTube. Which other classic Saturday Night Live holiday sketches do you hope to see tonight?

'Runaways' trailer: Kristen Stewart rocks, Dakota Fanning dons lingerie

Categories: Movie Trailers, Movies

The trailer for The Runaways hit the Internet today; it’s only 50 seconds long but there’s a lot of rock-n-roll energy in less than a minute (great choice to use “Cherry Bomb”). Kristen Stewart looks tough enough to be a young Joan Jett, and doesn’t seem to be doing the Bella lip-bite at all. And Dakota Fanning…um…seems to have grown up a lot since Charlotte’s Web! I guess I’m not used to seeing her in lingerie doing sexy singer moves.

What do you think, PopWatchers? Ready to see Kristen outside of the Twilight world? Surprised to see Dakota as a rock chick?

Videogame Face-Off: 'The Beatles: Rock Band' vs. 'DJ Hero'

This year was a big one for music games, with mighty entries from a range of contenders. But if you were going to buy just one this holiday season, our Face-Off has got you covered. Today, it’s the Beatles edition of the Rock Band series vs. the DJ version of the Guitar Hero franchise. Check back each week day through Dec. 23 for a new match-up.

In this corner: ‘The Beatles: Rock Band
Who knew marrying the wildly successful Rock Band franchise with the greatest band of all time was a smart move? The Beatles: Rock Band is the third in the series and the first time the game has themed itself after an artist. There’s the obvious Fab Four influences in things like song selection — an impressive collection of Beatles tracks, even unsung shredders like “Hey Bulldog”– and the venues, ranging from Shea Stadium to the roof of Abbey Road Studios. But the game also allows players to mimic the group’s vocal style with two harmonizing microphones, as well as its career trajectory in “story” mode. And the music is produced by Giles Martin, son of the true fifth Beatle, producer George Martin, so the sound is top-notch.

In the other corner: ‘DJ Hero’
Cashing in simultaneously on the rhythm game and mash-ups, mash-ups, even more mash-ups crazes, DJ Hero replaces the colored notes of Guitar Hero with indicators to crossfade, bump up the beat, and scratch the record. Club sensations like Daft Punk appear as avatars, and the levels have you cut between two sometimes contrary tracks: “I Want You Back” and “Semi-Charmed Life” is the peanut butter-chocolate combo you never knew you loved. It takes a bit to warm up to the equipment, but DJ Hero sucks you in by mimicking entry level DJ-ing surprisingly accurately. Plus Guitar Hero devotees who don’t want to warm up to the turntable can challenge you in “DJ Vs. Guitar” mode, which… should happen way more in real life.

And the winner… READ FULL STORY »

Clip du jour: Yes, Jack Bauer, there is a Santa Claus

Wow, this 24-themed Christmas card from a UK ad agency is really, really well done:

The Daily What called this “24 on 34th Street,” but I’m partial to “Miracle on 24 Street.” “Old St. Jack”? Something? I’m sure you have a good title rolling around in that noggin, PopWatchers.
