You can see our gallery of top New Year’s movies here – but most of them are about pivotal New Year’s scenes, not entire movies devoted to New Year’s. Alex Holdridge’s acclaimed indie film In Search of a Midnight Kiss from 2008 is one film that revolves around New Year’s Eve. It’s a funny, quirky, romantic, and real story that I hope will become the It’s A Wonderful Life of Dec. 31 for years to come. If you haven’t seen it, it’s perfect viewing as you ponder the start of a new year — but be warned, you might get an urge to look for your midnight kisser on Craigslist!
Anyone else love Midnight Kiss? Sound off in the comments about your favorite New Year’s stories on the big screen. If you’re staying in tonight, what movie will you be watching?

Every year I watch 200 Cigarettes. It is an entire movie about New Years Eve, has a fantastic cast and is hysterical. For me it is a must see every 12/31.
It became a tradition for me last year to watch Spirited Away. Can’t wait to watch it again tonight.
200 Cigarettes for me too.. The DVD is at my desk at work to take to a friends after work! It isn’t the best film ever but it is decent. and so much was cut from it it needed a Spec Ed DVD and Blu release bad
Haven’t seen “Kiss”, but thanks for the recc! Now hopefully the video store has it…
“Midnight Kiss” is a nice pick but I go for something classic during the holidays. George Cukor’s “Holiday” with Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn is my New Year’s Eve movie. It culminates with a big New Year’s Eve party and gets me in a feel-good, follow your heart mood for the new year.
200 Cigarettes is great. I love the cast… even Courtney Love.
Thanks for the recommendation judging from the trailer this is exactly my taste.
For me, New Year’s will always be “The Apartment”. I adore Jack Lemmon in this movie.
When Harry Met Sally. I always liked the New Year’s ending.
STREET TRASH
This looks good, but for me my kids and I always bring our kitchen table in to our living room, eat Chineese food and watch movies that usually deal with destruction…for some reason…guess the eldest still thinks its cool but the youngest isn’t super scared and we don’t fall asleep so it works for all of us. You know, The Day After Tomorrow, Swarm, Deep Impact, Armaggeddon, and this year we got a movie called Tidal Wave and of course 2012
This movie recommendation is one I’ll watch after they go to bed, though
I also usually end up watching that movie with Hugh Jackman and Ashley Judd the following day, its always on TV!
JHC–Rocky! Rocky’s life-altering fight against Apollo Creed takes place on New Year’s Day!!
it’s got to be the classic australian film “starstruck.” angus and the girl rolling down the stairs of the sydney opera house at midnight? fantastic.
Ohmygoodness!!! That looks totally romantic! I would love to see that movie! I’ve never had a midnight kiss…
I would’ve liked to party tonight, but now I’m not sure of any. I may just watch “The Holiday” with my mom. It’s such a cute movie!!! =D
thanks for this – happy holidays
