Robert Downey Jr. and Johnny Depp: How would you get 'em together on screen?

Filed under: Movies and tagged:

As we were leaving Sherlock Holmes yesterday, I asked my 62-year-old mother how awesome it would be to see Robert Downey Jr. star in a movie with Johnny Depp. Her response — “I would need a tranquilizer” — wasn’t exactly a surprise. She enjoyed Sherlock Holmes and Johnny Depp’s recent Sexiest Man Alive People cover equally. But it does show the kind of massive appeal a film costarring Downey and Depp would have. So, PopWatchers, let’s pitch us some plots…

I would love to see them play two eccentric actors who get caught up in some sort of real-life espionage. (Knowing that my mother shares my love for the 1987 Shelley Long-Better Midler classic Outrageous Fortune, I’m confident she’d second this.) Though it’s tempting to give them a bromance à la Holmes and Watson, they should initially hate each other à la Tango and Cash (another reference that I’m sure would appeal to the duo). Part of me wants it to be a period film, which would give Downey and Depp even more room to play; part of me wants it set today, but penned by Steve Martin with the heightened reality of Roxanne and LA Story.

So to recap: I’m pitching Outrageous Fortune meets Tango & Cash and Roxanne, possibly in period garb.

Your turn. What’s your dream project for Downey and Depp?

I have no idea’s, but the thought of this makes me excited! Of course, I love RDJ more than Johnny Depp (sorry!).

    • Holly

The two of them in a movie would be spectacular! Two amazing actord, although I hear Johnny more than Robert :)

      • Vivian

        I can’t even say who I like better… I love them both!

They both definitely have similar styles and nuances when they act, and both almost demand the spotlight, so if they were to star in something together, it’d have to be a movie with defined opposing characters for them to star as.

Sherlock Holmes2 w/ JD as Moriarity, or POTC4 with RDJr as Sparrow’s brother are easy picks, but i’d love to see them in something dark and quirky. They don’t really look like brothers, so maybe they could be opposing actors trying to do each other in?

Ugh, two overrated actors. I like Johnny Depp – I think he just gets way more credit than he deserves. Acting weird in yet another Tim Burton artisitc set piece is unnecessary. As far as RDJ – he is okay, not that great. The real talent out there for male leads are Joseph Gordon Levitt, George Clooney, James Franco, and Viggo Mortensen. What Hollywood needs is a male star with grit/an action star, like Clint Eastwood/Arnold/Stallone. There are enough pretty boys or wannabe tough guys as is (Vin Diesel/Russell Crowe).

      • JMB

I guess you never saw Donny Brasco or Gilbert Grape, or any of the many, many non-Burton/non-Disney films Depp has been in over the years. The man is an incredible actor.

      • Ryan

Sam Worthington…may be somewhat of a pretty boy but he is getting the right action credentials…look for him in Clash Of The Titans…which looks awesome

      • Vivian

I couldn’t really take Sam Worthington seriously with his wannabe American accent he was doing in Avatar, but his acting looked pretty decent.

But to Stephanie: I would hardly call Russell Crowe a pretty boy/tough guy actor! Watch a Beautiful Mind for goodness’ sakes. And RDJr and Johnny Depp are probably the most versatile actors out there today. They didn’t become famous until their recent blockbusters which may be why you have that impression of them, but watch their earlier stuff! RDJr in Chaplin was amazing, and Johnny Depp in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape was great.. I think it’s a crime that they don’t have Oscars.

You have HORRIBLE taste, Tanner. Depp and Downey are better than ALL the actors you listed. You clearly know nothing of acting and should be embarassed to even post her. Now put on the “Dunce” hat and sit on a corner.

      • Sean

haha yes, that’s what the movie world needs, an action star. *yawn*

      • Erin

Wowza, cause all Action stars have to do is get hooked up to wires and jump offa plane…. Clooney is ok, But RDJ and JD have real talent, good looks aside. Im still getting over the shock, Depp never got an Oscar for playing Captain Jack Sparrow…. genius!!! I cant decide who I love more, though, I was introduced to Depp first!

      • falconfan5

Surely you are not comparing Depp to Arnold or Sly?! Johnny Depp is an acting genius and RDJ is not too far behind him. Arnold and Sly’s types of films only appeal to those who like the mindless blood and gut fight movies with no intelligent story or substance. Not trying to be mean but those guys just aren’t artists like Depp and RDJ. However, Clint Eastwood is a great actor and director now. I.E. Gran Torino.

      • steff

wut!!! robert acts like a sweet heart even thou he has been to hell and back… sorry lost my head there…

    • amj

I agree with you here! I could go for this movie and also do love RDJ more than Depp myself.

    • Dan

A remake of Some Like It Hot. Depp in the Lemon role, RD in the Curtis role and Scarlet Johanson in the Monroe role.

      • Tiffany

I don’t know about the Scarlet role but I like that idea.

      • JenR

I know Some Like it Hot wasn’t really plausible, but it was much more believable then then it would be now. Back then, people weren’t expecting men to dress like women. Now, it is much more common.

    • johnnylover

um…johnny trumps them all. but a movie with them both would be good. just as long as johnny is the main character :)

  • Crystal

I think it would be interesting to see them in some sort of ridiculous melodrama. Like two bickering lawmen that must save the damsel in distress who has been tied to the train tracks. Or perhaps an adaptation of an Oscar Wilde play where everything hinges on a fan or a lost letter!

But really – they could make the most pointless movie ever and I would watch it. Because it would be DOWNEY AND DEPP!

    • Coverly

Your idea with an Oscar Wilde play is brilliant! It would be amazing. I think fron now on I will picture them while re-reading Wilde.

    • JennaE

I agree, they could just stand there and I would watch it for 2hrs! Although, something current would be good, a suspense not a comedy.

  • jmag

Its always a risk because you don’t know what their chemistry will be like once they are side by side. Just because you have 2 excellent individual actors doesn’t mean they’ll be good together. Guy Richie’s risk paid off for Downey and Law in Sherlock Holmes–their chemistry was excellent.

    • Sara

Oh, let’s just pretend they have great chemistry. Why so serious? This is a fun make-believe blog!

    • Amy

Better make sure to have an excellent director to rein in Johnny and Robert. Guillermo is a little busy, but would be my pick.

    • Renee

I agreed. It might sound good on paper, but not work out in reality. Although the thought does blow my mind a little. :)

  • Shelly

Depp should play Professor Moriarity in the Sherlock Holmes sequel. It would be awesome!!!

    • Shelley with an E

      I really like this idea!

    • BlackIrish4094

i heard Pitt is already earmarked for that role.

      • Stacie

        bs

    • anonymous

I am loving the idea of Depp playing Moriarty. That movie would be all kinds of awesome.

      • Snsetglaze

Depp is a better idea for Moriarty than Pitt.

      • Erin

Yes, yes, that seems like, totally perfect!!!! Good guy: Downey, Bad guy: Depp!!!! Fantasmical!!! Plus Depp has a much more evil mastermind feel then Pitt…. By the way all Moriati is Italian, and thus endds with and I…

    • Addison

forget pitt! just have depp play moriarty. thats what i thought as soon as i saw this article. I’m officially starting the petition. Keep replying to this post if you want depp to play moriarty. (they cant ignore ew posters)

      • robert

I agree with Addison. Forget Pitt, Johnny Depp would be a way better choice to play Prof. Moriarty!

      • kelsey

i agree. cast depp. he is definately a more talented actor

  • Pslightly Psycho

In the next BATMAN film? Depp plays the Riddler; Downey as Mr. Freeze or somethin’?

    • Chloe

      Yuck!!!

  • Craig S

RDJ could be the villain pirate in the next Jack Sparrow movie.

  • johnnydepp

Johnny depp will play jack sparrow in pirates of the caribbean 4, and Robert Downey Jr. can play his brother!!! WOULDN’T THAT BE HILARIOUS!!!!

    • Scully

I love that idea! Best one yet. :D

      • Snsetglaze

I was thinking a rival pirate – one based on Mick Jagger or Steven Tyler.

    • Amy

      Yeah!!!!!! Great frickin’ idea!

    • bird

      frickin awesome idea!

    • fred

      Just funny xd

  • BrandonK

I was saying the other day that Robert Downey Jr. is having a Johnny Depp moment. Respected actor who hasn’t had a hit in a long time is back with a bang sort of thing. I think they would definitely do well together, and I think their sensibilities are similar.

  • Erin

I would love to see them together in the Dark Shadows movie. Johnny is Barnabas Collins and Robert could play Quentin Collins. If there were flashbacks, as there were in previous incarnations, there would be some period costumes.

    • Scully

      Another excellent idea!

    • Nance Cedar

Love it! Best suggestion I’ve read!

    • aleksa

Ooh, I was coming on here to say that!

      • yep

no you wasn’t, I was coming on here to stay that! lol
        Great idea though love it.

  • KristopherR

Two cops-on the edge. They’re both crazy, but the get the job done. No other cops, rookies or old hats will work with them. Plus, you can have it take place in the 80s so you can get away with cheesy dialogue, snappy quips before they shoot the bad guy, over the top action, ‘great’ fashion.

I can just see it now…*wavy dream sequence*

I’m not gay, but those two together I think would make for a great, eccentric movie.

    • Chloe

A new version of the “Lethal Weapon” franchise perhaps?

      • Sara

Or Bad Boys (Will Smith/Martin Lawrence) type movie

    • Marie

What does being gay have anything to do with wanting to see 2 actors in a same movie? I think you’re protesting too much.

    • Snsetglaze

      With butt shots.

  • Jolie Moira Jessalyn Dawson

Pirates of the Carribban 4 for sure. RDJ could play a bad guy who turns good (perhaps learning the error of his ways of The Flying Dutchman?…)

  • flo

What a wonderful idea. I have always been a Downey fan of course there is no one like Mr. Depp the possibilities are endless.
By the way I agree with your mother I am 69 and Mr. Depp melts my heart.

  • Brad

Downey Jr. as Jack Sparrow’s brother sounds brilliant. Depp should repay him by starring with him in a dramatic pairing. Possibly involving a period piece similar to Satan’s Alley.

  • J.

Johnny Depp is great, has been for years, but so has Robert Downey Jr., in fact better. RDJ getting his life in order has been a real opportunity for public to see just how terrific he is.

  • Sugarbear

I can imagine them playing two men who are so alike (both in looks and general vibe) that they fall madly in love with one another … The Narcissus myth remade.

    • Brett

Perfect! Or else, cast them in “Return to Brokeback Mountain.”

    • GummiBear

YES to gay narcissus love story.
      that would be totally intense.
