'Repo Men' trailer: Jude Law goes out for blood (and livers)

Universal has just released a red-band trailer for Repo Men, a sci-fi thriller starring Jude Law and Forest Whitaker slated for an April 2010 release. Despite the similar title, Repo Men is not a remake of the director Alex Cox’s 1984 nihilistic sci-fi punk cult classic Repo Man. Its premise, though — in a dystopian future, a sinister megacorporation dispenses new organs to needy patients at exorbitant prices, then sends out repo men to reclaim them when they default on their payments — does bear a certain resemblance to Repo! The Genetic Opera, the campy, gory 2008 rock-opera musical that earned Paris Hilton a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Supporting Actress and grossed (in more senses than one) a paltry $188,127. That, in itself, may not bode well. But based on this trailer, Repo Men actually looks like it has potential to be pretty fun, in a gruesome, bloodsoaked way, with a darkly comic, satirical edge that harks back to movies like Robocop and Total Recall.

Take a look and tell us what you think. (Note: For those of you poor stiffs stuck working on Christmas Eve, it’s NSFW.) Does the idea of Jude Law as a badass futuristic repo man slicing out some dude’s pancreas appeal to you, or is his rather more genteel turn as Dr. Watson in Sherlock Holmes more your speed?

Looks very good, kind of unlike most of Jude Law’s work — very interesting.

Minority Report plot (hunter becomes the hunted) but with over the top violence, body organs, and a sense of humor. I’ll probably see it.

    • mark in nyc

yes, Minority Report made that plot line up. Jackass. Was that the first movie you ever saw or something?
Try Logan’s Run or about 1000 other movies.

F Universal. F them so much. “Repo! The Genetic Opera!” is an amazing film, and its story was a million times better than what this abomination looks like. The music adds a whole new element of awesome to it. This abortion that Universal ripped off should be chucked in the dumpster. Definitely NOT seeing it.

The book this film is based on (The Repossession Mambo by Eric Garcia) was actually written before Repo! The Genetic Opera. They stole his idea. Not the other way around.

i call bullshit on that one…now im a RtGO fan, and this does just look like a big budget knowck-off. but both stories were concieved in and around the 90s (garcia’s book evolved from a short story he wrote). but Zdunich had been preforming and tweaking RtGO, whereas garcia had only been writing it…i mean geez, the freaking book didnt even get published until march….when RtGO hadnt even been out for a year yet…so while we cant say for sure who did what first…im standing by my man Zdunich

        False.

The original stage play of Repo! The Genetic Opera ran off-broadway in 2002 and had another run in 2005. And the first incarnation of Repo! a short skit called ‘The Necromerchant’s Debt’ was copyrighted in 2000. The original book is a rip-off.

Sweetie, I would watch Jude Law do just about anything, so yeah, I’ll probably see it. Sigh.

  • Cory

Okay, so I’ve never seen “Repo! The Genetic Opera,” but this plot sounds very, VERY similar to the plot of that movie, at least according to IMDb. Now I suppose it’s possible that these movies just start with the same basic premise and then head in other directions (plus the Jude Law version doesn’t involve the actors singing), but I think it’s too close to call this a coincidence.

  • DW

I already saw this done in “Repo! The Genetic Opera,” and that had singing. Why would I want to see a big budget rip-off?

  • Abby

Jude Law has the weirdest hairline

Did Obama’s healthcare reforms really go that badly?
