A big, shiny, really expensive monster descends into movie theaters this weekend, and its name is Avatar. EW box office expert Nicole Sperling predicts that, without question, the blue beings in James Cameron’s masterpiece will dominate the dollars at multiplexes this weekend — to the tune of $87 million!
But: Is that the case? Are all you EW.com readers definitely going to see Avatar? Or is there a chance that something else — like say, maybe, The Princess and the Frog or The Blind Side or even (gasp!) Did You Hear About the Morgans? — could slip into your movie-going weekend? I’m dying to know. Let me know in EW’s weekly, totally unofficial Weekend Box Office Poll below. And then tell us why you’re seeing what in the comments below!

Real skeptical on Avatar making over $80 mill this weekend. That’s bigger than any of the Lord of the Ring movies, and despite inflation and 3D prices I don’t think it’ll happen.
The LotR movies are also all well over three hours long and never played in IMAX (at least not as many as they have now) or 3D.
I don’t know how much it’ll make this weekend, but it’ll be a lot.
I doubt any of those movies are at either of the two theaters and tomorrow night we are supposed to get over seven inches of snow…so…
Up in the Air
I saw Avatar last night. It was spectacular. Totally lives up to expectations.
Will never see Avatar, I saw the preview on Avatar Day and was not impressed – and their admission that the story is fairly routine/unoriginal definitely goes against it. I will watch Star Wars Episode IV this weekend.
I refuse to pay to see a movie cost that much money to make.
Why? I don’t care how much movies cost to make, as long as they’re GOOD. I’m not impressed by bad expensive movies or bad inexpensive movies. Some movies (like Transformers) spend money on flashy crap to throw in the screen, but Cameron spent money on effects and technology that actually contribute to and move the story.
I just think boycotting it based on how much it cost is kind of a petty rationale, but whatever.
Haven’t been to the movies in awhile. I still need to see Blind Side and Princess and the Frog
I’m seeing Up in the Air on Sunday but I already saw Avatar earlier today.
It was an 11 a.m. showing in IMAX 3D. It was completely sold out (these are $15 seats, might I add). The audience was older than I expected. Most of the adults in the theater were in their 30s, 40s and 50s. A lot of families, but not as many as you’d expect. A lot of dates, a lot of women and a lot of people in large groups. The response to the film was great (and it WAS a spectacular film). There was a massive line waiting for the theater to empty out when the film ended, too.
I’m off work Fridays so that’s when I see a lot of movies. For reference, the last Friday daytime movie I saw that was that packed was an IMAX showing of The Dark Knight.
This was roughly my experience, too (although our tickets are cheaper
). A lot more women and older adults than I expected. I just have to laugh at all the snobs calling it a “geeks only” film and saying they were the only ones who’d see it. Apparently a lot of geeks out there look like your mom and dad…
The next two movies on my Netflix queue are The Virgin Suicides and the original Manchurian Candidate, so I think I’ll be catching those.
Both great movies!
i was thinking about seeing avatar, but then heard it was 161 minutes…Yikes! and in 3D…NOOO (I am not a 3D fan, no matter how much they want to shove it down our throats). I won’t say never, but i won’t be there opening weekend.
I understand not being a 3D fan, but the 3D in Avatar is so ingrained into the film and so natural, you almost forget that it’s in 3D. It’s not gimmicky or annoying at all. Very well-done.
I’m going to see Up In The Air and the only othter over the Holidays is the one with Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, and Steve Martin.
awww
i just saw it… and considering my girlfriend broke up with me an hour beforehand, i don’t really give a sh it.
oops…that awww
was meant for you.
Why is “nothing” never an option in these polls? “Up in the Air” still hasn’t made it to the boonies where I live, so no movies for us this weekend.
I’m going to see Me and Orson Welles.
That looks great!
Up in the Air
I saw the Princess and the Frog last week and loved it.
Next week I plan to see It’s Complicated.
