Now that Glee is on hiatus, might we sustain ourselves with its real-life counterpart? NBC’s hoping so, with its Nick Lachey-hosted a capella contest Sing-Off debuting tonight.
Deja vu? You’re remembering Clash of the Choirs from 2007. At least I am, because I totally watched that. Because, sigh, I’m obsessed with choral shows. Welcome to my shame journal, PopWatchers!
For example, I was slavishly devoted to TLC’s short-lived Trial By Choir:
Anyone? Anyone else moved by the uplifting powers of song and the transcendent spirit of community? Just me?
I’m hoping Sing-Off is popular so some enterprising network executive will bring British hit show The Choir to America. In it, choral director Gareth Malone assembles unlikely groups into vocal powerhouses — like in The Choir: Boys Don’t Sing, where he managed to wrangle 1,250 reluctant schoolboys into this:
In The Choir: Unsung Town, he turned an entire village into a chorus:
Are you expecting Sing-Off to hit your Gleek-y joy receptors, PopWatchers? And do you share even a shred of my dedication to choral pleasures?

I’m THERE. I love a cappella, sang in a group in college, and am more likely to buy a CD from the group that wins this show than the winner of American Idol.
Also, I’m a giant geek.
agreed, agreed, agreed, and agreed! So psyched!
Clash of the Choirs was an awesome, if short, series and Nick did a great job with his choir – so I’ll be checking out this new show.
Sorry, but no reality can live up to the crazy, candy-colored world of Glee.
Here comes Treble.
Where’s Andy?
I dunno, these just aren’t as good. The squeaky-clean and polished Glee-world has its own charm. If I want to hear average choirs I’ll go to my college’s glee club.
Oh yeah, I’ll be watching (or at least watching on hulu later)! I liked what you said about the uplifting powers of song and the feeling of community. That’s exactly what I love about singing in choirs, and why I love “Glee.” I too am hoping that “The Sing-Off” will fill the Glee-shaped void in my life for the next four months!
I’m hooked! But i think the choir seems to be more interesting.
I didn’t see Sue in any of the slips … so, um, no.
I’m watching it right now. I like it so far. Nick is a great host. He always seems so at ease.
I really didn’t like this show. I’m a huge HUGE gLeek and was hoping for more. Obviously acapella isn’t my thing if it isn’t the Acafellas.
I love, love, love this show! The groups are amazing and the format of the show allows you to experience a cappella and enjoy the music without investing weeks of watching auditions, getting to know each contestant, and calling in. Love it!
Addicted. plain addicted. I’m addicted to Gareth Malone and The Choir. I’ve seen two series so far and am watching everything on YouTube about the South Oxhey and Glynbourne series. Can’t get enough of this.
Disclaimer – singer for forty years, at the highest amateur level (symphony chorus).
Gareth, love you, hon!
