I would love to see Where the Wild Things are get a nomination.
‘A Single Man’ gets my vote.
Inglourious Basterds is, by far, the best film I’ve seen in 2009. Absolutely amazing!
Fav movie: Inglourious Baterds. Best movie: The Hurt Locker.
The Hurt Locker is the only movie that has stayed with me for the whole year. Once I saw it, I compared every other movie to it and haven’t found one I like better (still haven’t seen Up in the Air). Jeremy Renner gave the performance of the year.
Like others have said, I have yet to see some of the big contenders, like Up in the Air, Avatar, and Nine.
I really loved The Hurt Locker, but my favorite by far was An Education. I saw it more than a month ago, and it’s still stayed with me. I’ve decided to boycott any awards show that snubs Carey Mulligan for her performance in that. She was beyond amazing.
UNTIL THE POWERS THAT WANT TO BE ALLOW A WIDER RELEASE OF THE ROAD, I AM BOYCOTTING ALL FILMS AT THE THEATRE, AN IMMENSE PRICE FOR ME NOT TO PAY. I MAY NOT HAVE SEEN THE WINNERS COME AWARD TIME…MAYBE MY LIMITED ENGAGEMENT WITH THE STUDIOS WILL BE DILUTED TO NETFLIX.
People whose judgment I trust have said Hurt Locker is an excellent movie; that said, how can I watch it? Is it still playing? I doubt it. And I know it’s not coming out for home video until early next year. I’m withholding further judgment until Nine, Invictus, Up in the Air, and Avatar, among others, get wide traction. (Though Up in the Air I think already has wide release …)
Hurt Locker was a very good movie in my opinion, but you bring up a good point. Is it even playing anywhere now, and when it was released last summer, it was very hard to find a location that it was showing. I don’t recall seeing even one trailer or advertisement for it either. Was it just expected to flop being an Iraq war movie or what. Hopefully now that the film critics have given it their celebrated seal of approval it will get a reshowing in theaters with a distribution that it deserves. Or not :/
Also, might as well add that the SF Bay Area film critics have also named Hurt Locker as their Best Picture pick.
I so wanted Viggo Mortensen o get at least a oscar Nom. I guess since thats not likely now after golden globes. I think Renner was my second fav performance. Bastards next fav film.
‘The Hurt Locker’ is the most overrated film of the year. While it was fairly gripping, it lacked depth, character development, realism and arguably a plot. (Military folks are giving a huge ‘thumbs down’ for that aspect). I was laughing in the theater at how ridiculous and implausible so many of the scenes were. It lacked so many of the elements that critics usually require, I can’t figure out why they are so hot for this movie.
