Filed under: Television and tagged: ,

We’ve been busy little elves compiling lists of our favorite (and least favorite) television shows of 2009. Of course we’re not going to give you any spoilers about what tops our list just yet (sorry!), but we’re oh so curious about which series you couldn’t get enough of this year. So tell us, faithful PopWatchers, in the comments below: Did True Blood sink its teeth into you? Are you crazy for Mad Men? Or Did Glee have you singing? Let us know your picks — and keep in mind this is a no-judging zone — and we’ll place you on our nice list!

In spring 2009, it was definitely “Lost,” and the second half of “Battlestar Galactica’s” final season. But since sometime during summer reruns, I have discovered and fallen hard for “The Big Bang Theory.” I’m Netflixing seasons 1 and 2, and watching season 3 as it runs on CBS. It’s hands-down my favorite TV show airing right now.

    • Anne

Agree with this comment. Lost was incredible, and though the BSG finale left some things wanting, that doesn’t detract from a stellar last couple of episodes. Every moment between Adama and Roslin is burned into my memory forever. Gold.

      • Henry

        GLEE
        GLEE
        GLEE!!!

Smore, I think you watch too much tv. lol

      • spikesgrl

Smore…You watch all those shows and you don’t watch Supernatural? What is wrong with this picture?

      • Howard

Watch “Better Off Ted”, and you’ll add it back onto your list.

    • Colin

      THE SHIELD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • forealz?

I’m gonna go with another fx show and say It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia!

      • Colin

        Forealz,

Good show but The Shield was perhaps a perfect conclusion to the best story ever on television. It stired emotion like no other series!

      • Khristina

Wrong…seeing Locke still dead in the trunk stirred emotion like no other series! LOST, by far, the best series this year!

      • dj

        Sunny
        True Blood
        Dexter
        Glee

      • VikkiSixx

As much as I love The Shield….which is more than most people (just ask the people who got punched for talking during it)… The Shield never aired in 2009. It ended in 2008.

      • VikkiSixx

The best shows of 2009 were, in no particular order:

        Sons of Anarchy
        Dexter
        Chuck
Fringe (second half of season 1…season 2 isn’t so hot)
        Gossip Girl
The Unusuals (another great show that got cancelled)

      • natalie

Unfortunately I’ve only been able to see bits of Dexter, through re-runs (costs $10 per month to get the channel) but from what I’ve seen, its fatastic.

    • Colin

      The S.h.i.e.l.d!

      • VikkiSixx

The Shield never aired in 2009. It ended in Fall of 2008!

    • Spunkygal

Modern Family, Flash Forward and Dancing with the Stars

      • Kelly

I agree with you all but you cannot forget the amazing season that Rescue Me had. Great show!

      • Laurin

Agree with Spunkygal, but add Vampire Diaries

    • Burp’n Slurp

For me, it’s a tie for best show of 2009 between DEXTER and BREAKING BAD.
I can’t believe nobody else mentioned Breaking Bad, it is truly one of the best shows out there. Cranston deserved his Emmy.

      • Nick

It’s ‘Breaking Bad’ for me! Cranston and Paul were incredible throughout the year! ‘Dexter’ fell from grace in Season 3 and whilst it is better this year, it isn’t comporable to its first season or the second season of ‘Breaking Bad’.
I wanna give a shout out to ‘Party Down’ as well! Awesome programme!

      • Joey

        the BEST Shows:
        1. BREAKING BAD (better acting and Cinematography than most award winning movies these days)
        2. MAD MEN (just started watching this season and mid way through went out and purchased the first two seasons and had a marathon viewing. Pure greatness.)

        the Most ADDICTING Shows
        1. DEXTER (makes me empathize and love a serial killer so much I ordered a subscription to Showtime solely for this show. What’s wrong with me?)
        2. TRUE BLOOD -I don’t know if it’s every episode’s cliff hanger ending, but this is my guilty pleasure I probably looked forward to the most each week. Yeah it’s gratuitous, (with kinda bad acting) but that’s what makes it fun :)

        Best NEW 2009 Show
MODERN FAMILY -Somehow took the principles of the GREATS (The Office and Arrested Development) and made it fresh, their own, and really, really funny.)

    • Skip182

Lost, BSG, The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother.

    • AshleyG

      Glee, Lost, Dexter, The Tudors

      • springs85

        Love The Tudurs! And Glee!

    • Catie

I love Psych. It gets funnier each season. In second place I’d have to say Wipe out.

    • Tracy

Dexter is having a thriller season
Can’t wait for the final season of Lost
      Glee makes me smile
      Modern Family makes me laugh
Survivor has been awesome – come on, what girl wouldn’t appreciate a regular dose of Probst?
      Liking Duchovny on Californication too

    • Rio

LOST for sure. Nothing even compares to it.

  • Charlotte

Glee, hands down. It’s my favorite show in years. Runners up: American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance, and Survivor.

    • NikkiB

ITA! I became a Gleek this year.

    • Turnip

Nice runners up. So you are the one who is killing scripted television.

      • Charlotte

        Yes, it’s all me.

    • Survivor

Survivor has been excellent this season! Sometimes I can’t stand the excitement!

      • Krusty

Tru dat. I’m amazed after 10+ years it came back with such a strong season. However best on TV has to go to LOST, followed by Mad Men. Fabulous writing, crisp solid acting, costumes, set design. It’s like these people (many of whom were not alive during the 60′s) fit right in. Nuanced storytelling at its best. Only problem is the season is too short. Looking forward to catching Breaking Bad on DVD–I hear Cranston is superb.

    • EMEM

Glee, Community, So you think you can dance, and bones

      • danner

Heck Yes! Community! Why hasn’t EVERYONE discovered it yet?

      • Dawn

Rock on with the Community love!

      • natalie

Community has been inconsistent…but something about it keeps me coming back. I really love the characters.

    • Don

Yikes! That’s a lot of Realité.

    • Mike

If you want a musical watch “The Nightman Cometh” episode on Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia

      • Katie

OMG, yes! I randomly get the Nightman song stuck in my head during the day…while I’m at work. Hilarious! Oooh-whoa-oh!

      • DL

Saw them perform it live- so unbelievably awesome.

    • NJV

Older: LOST, Bones, NCIS, Burn Notice, Leverage, Big Bang Theory. Newer: Castle, White Collar. Just watched Men of a Certain Age – Sure to be a winner!

      • rgm

Add Mentalist and you have the complete set!

  • Mona Smith

    Mammas Boys

  • wendy

Modern Family and Dexter. Love me some Serial killers and one killer family.

    • paige

yea i have to agree- best comedy & drama of the year

      • Lynn

I also agree – Modern Family is the best new comedy this season. I love Manny! And, Dexter really shined this season – I can’t believe the season is almost over. It feels like it just started!

      • Sam

i also agree- LOVE Dexter and Modern Family. i would have to add True Blood and LOST as well though :)

    • Mik

Agree! Modern Family is the BEST TV comedy this year.

  • meso soup

    EASTWICK.

    • Ambient Lite

Cancelled. I guess you were they only fan.

      • Regina

Not the only fan. That is also my fav show this season. In fact, I know a lot of people that are upset about it getting canceled.

  • Valley Girl

Three-way tie between “True Blood,” “Mad Men,” and “Dexter.”

    • J.

      Agreed!

      • penny lane

That is a perfect three-way tie indeed!

    • doug

I fourth! Maybe Mad Men as 2nd though.. not saying its not an amazing show, but just so little happens each episode.

  • Sonny

absolutely 100% Glee. The writing is excellent, the singing is fantastic, and it was the show that introduced the world to Sue Sylvester. This show is a breath of fresh air to the endless amount of “reality” tv that’s out there right now.

    • IdinaFan737

I agree completely. There should be more shows like this.

    • mark

disagree! I hate this show. Jane Lynch was a star way before this crap.

    • Josh

I like Glee but recently it has had writing problems. It got bogged down in too many story lines and therefore lacked cohesion. I like it but I am not in love with it. There have been stellar episodes but the arc thus far isn’t the best thing on TV. LOST, however, was truly terrific. Not that these 2 shows relate at all. As far as comedy goes I would say either Curb Your Enthusiasm or Bored to Death. Ted Danson did great work on both!

      • Josh

OMG Totally forgot about Modern Family. It’s like a successful version of Arrested Development. Damn I miss that show.

      • hbetke

        @ your modern family comment-
arrested was on for almost three whole seasons and modern family just started…lets give it a bit of time before we call it more successful…just sayin!

      • eden

we can’t really compare MF to arrested development can we? Arrested development is the blackest of black comedies that never let the audience off the hook for a second or ever got sentimental. MF is very funny, but every episode ties up neatly and no one has to feel bad about anything for long. It’s a very basic sitcom, nothing wrong with that, but it’s no where near arrested development in creativity and has a completely different tone. If it’s aiming for Arrested Development, it
        s failing.

    • Zoey

I agree – in a decade that tried to revive the “teen comedy” this was a breath of fresh air. The characters are unashamed in their persistence to infect us with, well, glee and it works. The writing is great but the cast truly make it shine. Can you imagine anyone else now but Jane Lynch as Sue Sylvester, demon cheer coach extraordinare?

  • paige

    *cough*cancelled*cough*

    • paige

grr that was supposed to go to Meso Soup’s Eastwick comment

      • Ambient Lite

Ha – I just put added that before I saw yours.

    • meso soup

*cough* derserving shows *cough* always get axed *cough* still the best of *cough* the year *cough*

      • Chris

you should see a doctor about that.

      • meso soup

        I think i caught something from FOX….

      • paige

        TWILIGHT!!!!!!!

      • amy

totally!! Right on keep on fighting the good fight!

  • Kristina

Modern Family was by far my favorite new show this year. TV has been missing a good show like this for a long time. So many laugh out loud moment – it never disappoints

    • Sarah

I agree it is the best new show this year and best new comedy in quite a few years.

    • EW Fanatic

Agree. I really thought we’d never get a great new sitcom, and here it is. Best new show, best sitcom!

  • michelleee

    best new show–GLEE
    best show (ever)–LOST

    • Matt

      I just couldn’t agree more!!!

    • Mrs. Featherbottom

      Amen Brotha…er, Sistah

    • jeannie

I agree with both of these!

    • MattyB

ITA as well! My thoughts exactly on both counts!

    • Cortney

Wow! We think alike. Can’t believe we have to choose in the spring when Glee comes back.

    • shalala

same! haha i can’t believe so many others agree :) its so tragic they’re going to be on at the same time in the spring!

  • Maureen

    True Blood
    Glee
    The Big Bang Theory
    How I Met Your Mother
    FlashForward
    Lost

  • Joseph

The killer combination of scrubs and Better off ted on ABC has been a revelation. Not only did ABC give Scrubs a chance to live on, but it finally paired it with a show that could meet its wacky sensibilities while still having a heart of gold.

  • Sarah

GLEE!!! GLEE!!! GLEE!!!!…. Oh, did I mention GLEE!!!!!

    • michka

Oh come on, are you serious? The best show of the year is of course … GLEE !!! lol

      • Kelly

        Definately Glee!!!
        im a gleek=]
        i LOVE it!!!
        xo

    • Swerds

Yes! Another who can’t say it but screams it! GLEE!

  • Nerwen Aldarion

Castle, unique and fun with a growing fanbase.

another contender is NCIS, a show in it’s seventh season reaching number 1 for the first time. It’s got to be good for some reason, it looks like the audience finally caught up with it.

    • Weena

Yes! Castle is my absolute favorite.

    • Hope Elyse

That’s a big fat yes for Castle and NCIS!

Also have to add Fringe. SOOO fantastic.

  • NikkiB

Glee! Hands down. It became my new obsession.
