ABC disinvites Adam Lambert from 'Jimmy Kimmel,' New Year's Eve. What next? Public shaming as public-relations strategy?

Look, I wasn’t a huge fan of Adam Lambert’s now infamous American Music Awards set — the groping and kissing and simulated fellatio seemed more Read the full post.

Nothing I say will change anyone’s mind. I can only say that I liked Adam on the show, I thought he was amazing on tour, I cringed when I watched his AMA performance, and I like his album. One misstep in promo strategy isn’t going to make me stop liking him, and it’s not going to derail his career.

    • jon

@Pete: I’m with you. I liked him on AI and thought he was very entertaining. But I don’t believe this is a matter of changing people’s minds. This really isn’t about love or hate. As much as it looks like that, I think that most people are just voicing their disappointment in somebody they thought would turn out to be a superstar talent. The problem is not with Adam. I think the real culprits are AI for starting the myth, and us for believing the media hype that continues to this day. His bad behavior goes beyond this incident. It’s his arrogant response in the subsequent interviews that really turned people off. We were looking for remorse and humility, and instead we saw a spoiled, self-indulgent artist who lacked the remore and humility he needed to get him pass all of this. The die has been cast.

      • jean

Sorry, Jon, I just can’t agree with you that Adam’s “bad behavior goes beyond this incident”. I think he has handled the outrage and hatred thrown at him with astonishing grace and dignity. It is neither arrogance nor self-indulgence for him to point out the obvious double standard in the way other performances at the AMAs were not criticized but his was. He is entirely right that he should not have to apologize for over-the-top and sexually risque elements of his performance that were no more offensive than things Janet Jackson, Rhianna, Shakira, Lady Gaga, or Fergie did. As for humility, he has even made statements in support of ABC’s actions and refusing to be confrontational about it. He has been a class act all the way in handling this situation. He’s admitted he “went too far” and “got carried away” in his performance. I didn’t like his AMA performance either, but I admire him greatly as a person and as an entertainer. I think he’s learned a lesson from all this. I support him 100%.

I think Adam Lambert, David Cook, Carrie Underwood are someof the best raw talent in the arena today.
But not everyone watches american idol and not aware of some of these people until they are huge.
I love Adam but this performance was way over the top for a first time big night out….
He just needs to think about what he is putting out there for ALL people to see.

    • jon

@Lillypad. I agree with you. Actually, most of the AI contestants are talented. We all know the most successful ones like Kelly Clarkson, Jhud, Daughtry, and of course the one’s you’ve named. I disagree on one point, AI is the most watched tv show. Everyone knows about it. It was a great launching pad for all of them. The only differeence is that Adam Lambert was constntly told that he was an icon and legend before he even left the show. The problem is that he, and his fans believe the hype, and it went to his head.

      • jean

I have to disagree with you on your last sentence. Most people don’t need or use the media (or the AI judges) to tell them what they like or who is insanely talented. The media sends mixed messages, as did the AI judges. You seem to have forgotten that Adam did not win AI. If all the hype was in Adam’s favor, why do you think he didn’t win ? In any case, I don’t believe any of the hype “went to Adam’s head”. He’s still the humble person he has been since we first met him on AI. He has self-confidence, but also humility. I think you’ve misread him in his post-AMA interviews.

  • Antony

Adam’s album is as good as a stupid movie that get allot of promo and after 10 minutes waching you get so bore that you wish you were home vacuuming only two songs in the whole album are ok kriss and allison are wayyy better

  • Alvaro

    lets boycott adam the profane

    • mike

@Alvaro: Look on the charts, your wish came true. If his album fails, he fails.

      • jean

Huh ? His album debuted at #3, which is amazingly good considering all the negative press he got due to the AMAs.

  • gayguyher

Most gays I know don’t even like this guy and the ones that do are as flayboyant as he is. Its time for a reality check glamberts….he is …was and prob has now doomed himself to a niche or cult act. His image a OTT vocal style is limiting by its nature. His 200k dedicated Twitter following glamberts all went out and purchased his cd in the first few days…and in its second week is predicted to sell at around maybe 50k maybe more maybe less. This dispite all the hype and coverage ….this is not the second week sales of a phenom or the next big thing. Reality check…Susan B is that phenom…predicted to sell another 300k-400k around a 50% fall but with first week #s she posted anothr 300k is impressive. A 75% fall from 200k defines front loaded.

    • Gayer Than Thou

I couldn’t care less how many albums Lambert sells, as long as I got mine! Good for Susan Boyle. I hope she enjoys every minute of her fame. I hope Kris and Allison have long and illustrious careers. But mostly I hope that Adam Lambert is around making your blood boil for the next 60 years.

      • jean

Ha ha, Gayer! I couldn’t agree more. :-)

  • Alan Carver

Lambert and his publicity team made a bad call on the AMA performance for going out the gate, the week of his release. It either was going to net him a great spot on Billboard and get him some great interviews. Well out of the two one worked – he got great sales, but the networks are correct in ‘reacting’ in this fashion since he seems to want to do ‘provocateuring’ as a method to shock people with his brand of so called entertainment. I think that miscalculation from his team – worked in one way and back-fired in another. Let’s see the only one touching him is bawbawa wabawa from her Most Fascinating People of 2009 show and The View slot. Other than that – keep the wheels on turning until the eventually fall off . . .

    • jean

Uh, he’s already performed on The Early Show, the Letterman Show, and the Ellen Degeneres Show since the AMAs. And he’s currently scheduled for Barbara Walters “Ten Most Fascinating People of 2009″ on Dec 9, The View on Dec 10, Larry King on Dec 10, Conan O’Brien on Dec 14,and Jay Leno on Dec 21. Bonny Hunt has extended an invitation to appear on her show. He’s also appearing at a Spielberg award show on Dec 9 and at several “Jingle Balls” around the country. He’s not doing too badly!!

  • kim

I was not offended by Adams performance, personally. But I sure did say “wow that’s vivid”. I say relax a little bit, at least I didn’t have to see Janet Jackson Nip again.

  • Michael

I thought Adam was by far the most talented performer on Idol last year and wondered why he hadn’t been discovered earlier. Now I know. Adam has alienated a good portion of his potential audience through his “self expression.” If he wants a long career, he’s going to have to tone down his stage act or he will be forgotten very soon. His career handlers need to sit him down and tell if he is interested in long term success, he needs to accentuate his great talent and down play the theatrics.

    • @Michael

It’s very noble of you to offer Adam advice, but I honestly don’t think he would take it. You see the overwhelming hype has caused him to develop a tremendous ego. There is no power on earth that can convince him that he is noot the rock icon that we all thought he would be. Sadly, he has made some questionable moves since leaving the show. For example, his first single, FYE, is a dance record. He lost all credibility in the Rock community for releasing this song. It left all his fans bewildered and highly disappointed. He followed this blunder with an album cover that made him look gayer than any person in the history of homosexuality. And finally, we come to his raunchy/taboo performance at the AMA’s, and the susequent FU to anyone who was offended. Good Luck Adam.

  • Angie

I think ABC has the right to disinvite him. I believe that I read that Adam intentionally mislead the network during rehearsals. The censors/network did not know what he was going to do on the air. He wanted to shock and get his 15 minutes but now they should be up. I wish he would just promote his album and get off his high horse. He was wrong for not leveling with the network but I don’t blame ABC for canceling him.

    • Troll

@Annie: You don’t believe everything you read, do you? You saw his performance, how can you say that the network was right. Adam was merely expressing himself artistically. He even said so himself. Are you calling Mr. Lambert a liar? I don’t see anything wrong with the performance, and I agree with Adam, he’s not your babysitter. It’s not his fault that your family was wathching. If he’s not your cup of tea, then maybe you should be watching something else. After all, this ain’t American Idol anymore.

  • Marco

The AMA’s had a rating of NC-14 so if any children under that age were watching, it’s their parents fault. This isn’t just a gay issue, it’s also an antisemetic issue. It WILL hurt ABC and Disney if EVERYONE boycotts them. Let’s make a pact!!!

  • Who is Adam?

Adam disappointed a lot of AI fans who voted for him with that obscene, raunchy performance on AMA. In his Good Morning America interview, Adam claimed the outrage was due to a “double standard because he was a man and gay”. He said Janet Jackson grabbed a crotch and was not slammed. Well, nasty public performance behavior by others does not excuse his own bad behavior. Also, Adam’s AMA performance did not just have one sexually explicate action. He packed many obscene gestures and actions into his “performance”. Adam frenetically pranced around the stage leading a S&M geared male dancer who was crawling on his hands and knees, by a leash. He repeatedly ground that dancer’s face into his crotch. He groped and jerked his hand between the legs of a female dancer whose legs were spread open above him on props. He roughly mashed his face against his keyboard players face in a vicious parody of a “kiss”. All the while, Adam gave a miserable vocal performance that would have gotten him voted off American Idol. Thousands waited hours to see him on AMA. Where was the nice guy with the sweet smile and incredible voice? Some obsessed fans will support him no matter what he does, but many people (and fans) do not appreciate sexually explicit public behavior. Even established singers have lost legions of fans and important demographics when they decided to add sexually explicit acts or shocking behavior to their performances to spark a flagging career and/or create a publicity “buzz”. For his first major gig after AI, ADAM chose the song, ADAM added the obscene behavior, and in spite of the urging of his father and others, ADAM has refused to apologize to any he may have inadvertently offended. So who is the real Adam? The charismatic AI performer who thrilled people around the world with his incredible voice, or the raunchy performer with the nasty gay night club act. The AMA performance was a very bad lead-in to a “first” album. It showed bad taste, poor judgment, and a proclivity for obscene deviant behavior that could compromise an otherwise promising career. Many of us just expected better of Adam. Icons of the past like Sinatra, Elvis, and Michael Jackson, have had dark sides, however, they did not flaunt it, and certainly not at the start of their careers. Adam has suffered a serious hit to his reputation and career. Yes he will be on The View this week, thanks to Barbara Walters, but ABC no longer trusts him. That View segment will be pre-recorded….

    • melissa

You do realize that we already know most of what you wrote? All you had to do was say that Adam was a complete idiot for thinking that anybody outside of horny cougars, gays, or eternally stupid Adam fans would find what he did entertaining. Unfortunately for him, he will continue to stumble because he actually thinks he’s right, and forget about AI, this is who he truly is.

  • Lisa

    Who’s Jimmy Kimmel?

this is a remarkable weblog post, one of the finest from these which i have come across so far. i am adding your rss to my reader, see you each and every week

  • Thomas

Actually he worked for years as an unrecognized musician in Los Angeles before getting his big break on American Idol, where he was voted to the #2 spot by millions of fans. It sounds like he’s earned his dues to me.

  • joliee

    Shut up fat ass…

  • Jill

Yeah – his 15 minutes sure are up. He only sold almost 200,000 copies of his debut album in a week.
What a flash in the pan.
    Sarcasm intended.

  • Skip182

His first week was impressive, and no one is denying he has a solid fan base. The interesting thing will be to see how he does these next few weeks. I don’t think he made many new fans with the performance, so I don’t know if he can keep those numbers up.

  • Anna

You’re not half as funny as you think you are. And quit peddling your stupid websites, it’s tiresome.

  • Anna

Another hilarious post from a snake oil salesman peddling Christain love matches on the internet.
