'Heroes': Should Mohinder go the way of the dodo? And if so, how?

I’m not usually a morbid person, but I’ve been screaming “Kill Mohinder Suresh!” in the general direction of my TV for almost four seasons now. As Heroes started to go downhill, the bland scientist (played by Sendhil Ramamurthy) began to symbolize everything that was so bad about a show that used to be so good. His only real character trait was the amazing power to always make friends with the wrong people. Worse still, his narration bookended every episode with insipid, subtle-as-a-brick-to-the-head thematic talk that made Meredith Grey sound like Shakespeare.

Although still listed as a series regular, Ramamurthy has been mostly absent this season, except for one terrible episode that teased viewers with a Mohinder death scene but then copped out (thanks, time travel!). However, The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Ramamurthy has been cast in the dramedy pilot Rex Is Not Your Lawyer, starring (geekgasm!) Dr. Who‘s David Tennant as an attorney who starts suffering from panic attacks.

Does this mean that Mohinder will soon be gone for good? An NBC rep tells EW that “Rex is just a pilot right now, so [Ramamurthy] is still on Heroes,” and clarifies that “Rex is in second position to Heroes.” In other words, there’s a possibility Ramamurthy could potentially pull an Elizabeth Mitchell, who’s currently starring on V, yet is also slated to appear on the upcoming final season of Lost. But why not cut the man loose already? I’ve never seen any of Ramamurthy’s work outside Heroes, but I’m optimistic that he could flourish in the dramedic world of Rex. Pessimists could argue Ramamurthy has never very good at capturing the supposed gravitas of Heroes, but the show’s writing team has put Mohinder through so many complete personality shifts that I doubt any actor could’ve made the character believable. (Well, Adrian Pasdar could have; RIP, Nathan Petrelli.)

So my questions to you are these: Would you watch Ramamurthy if you didn’t have to believe he was a scientific genius? And more to the point: if Mohinder were indeed to leave Heroes, how should he make his exit? I’ve got a few ideas! Travel back in time to become his own murdered father. Die right in the middle of delivering a speech about the nature of humanity. Live happily ever after in the lost city of Atlantis. Develop the power of flight, turn the world back in time to when Heroes was good, and then die of exhaustion. Die heroically rescuing the rest of the cast from a burning cruise ship.

What’s your dream scenario for booting Mohinder, PopWatchers? And Mohinder fans out there, can you justify in 25 words or less why he’s not the worst character ever?

I think its hysterical that this show is on the air still. I gave up midway through last season and I am very pleased that I did. The show wasnt great to begin with but I loved the concept… that is until I realized that the writers really think that viewers are stupid… Their lucky its on a sad excuse for a network like NBC where its the only drama they can rest their “laurels” on… since NBC has forgotten all about the hour drama and all… pfft- pathetic

Mohinder is the Jar-Jar Binks of the Heroes universe – annoying and a stupid pawn of all the evil characters. He should be forced to sit and watch Season 3 – that will kill him.

Haven’t watch this season and don’t miss it.

Just have him die from an experiment going wrong. Either that or leave him in the psychiatric room Hiro transported him into (writer’s Freudian slip???)

Was it just me, or did Season 1 not have any issue of killing off characters?

I left a year and a half ago…. Zachary is much better playing Spock anyway.
But I guess we could always set Mohinder on fire….

Too little, too late — nobody watches nor cares anymore!

They lost this viewer way back last season but yeah, they needed to do away with Mohinder somewhere in S2.

He’s handsome and has a beautiful speaking voice. I’d hate to see her go.

I’m so frustrated with this show. It’s feels like everytime they have writters block they invent some new power that one of the original cast gets or they create another new character with special powers. Please..enough is enough!

Mohinder is such a downer. I left when he and Parkman became Dad 1 and Dad 2 to that young girl and I wanted to stab my eyes with a fork. Please let him sacrifice himself for the others by putting a tire around his neck and slowly letting it burn for say 3 weeks. Lovely!

I gave up on this show about 3-4 episodes into last season (I can’t believe I kept watching for even a second after season 2…), and Mohinder was a huge reason why. He, Nicki/whatever the hell her clone’s name was, and the schizophrenic writing made me want to bash my own skull in. Even Hiro got annoying, despite how I freaking LOVED him at first :(

Mr. Kring, please do the poor people still watching a favor and just end the show.

I don’t get the Mohinder hate. I’ve always liked his character.

I think it’s mostly what the writers have done with his character. He is used as such a tool by EVERYBODY in every season. Peter too. Granted, I think most of the Heroes characters have sucked because the writers don’t seem to understand the principle of a personality being more than the basic summaries they assigned to all of their characters. “A genetic scientist with daddy issues.” “An empathetic nurse.” “The cheerleader who can’t die.” But those aren’t personalities; those are taglines. Unfortunately, the show bought into their own marketing and haven’t bothered trying to create, I dunno, character growth or anything. For a show about “evolution” (although it’s more like a sci-fi equivalent of evolution), they stink at making the characters evolve in any way. Mohinder’s just one of the more blatant examples of the show’s failure.

        Agreed.

I feel so bad for all the people I recommended Heroes to back during the first season. Last season was too much for me. I watched the season opener, my DVR lost the remaining episodes, and my family and I took it as a sign to just give up on the show. It’s disappointing, but I really wish NBC would just kill the whole show, Mohinder with it.

  • Marc

Id sad cause he’s so hot!

Remove that stupid thumb ring, and he can stay. Superficial? ya, that’s me.
