In lieu of bread crumbs, last night’s Thanksgiving-themed Gossip Girl was stuffed with pregnancies, elevator grab-ass, and a really inappropriate onesie. Still, I’m sure the Pilgrims would have enjoyed this Upper East Side feast; there had to be at least a few teen soap fans on the Mayflower.
The big entrée was Serena’s relationship with the most boring man in New York, aka Tripp Vanderbilt. I honestly don’t get why Serena would choose this dude over Nate. He’s a snooze and he has Conan O’Brien hair. Also, is it just me or does it seem like Gossip Girl producers have a thing for elevators? Why are things ALWAYS going down in elevators? Just a couple weeks ago we had that major heart to heart between Serena and Blair in the elevator. Let’s move on to some new locations. Maybe an escalator? Or perhaps one of those treadmills they have in airports? That could be fun! The whole elevator makeout session did lead to Chuck’s pretty genius line: “A little Thanksgiving proclamation: You two ever play grab ass in my elevator again and Serena will be staying in an airport Marriott.” “Grab-ass” has to be one of my favorite, little-used expressions.
Of course, Serena had the most inappropriate outfit at Thanksgiving. I normally love a onesie but I feel like that could be a difficult outfit when you’re stuffing yourself with food and drink.
I’m not sure what’s going on in the Humphrey/Van der Woodsen household but clearly there are no scissors in sight. Rufus, Dan, and Eric are all approaching serious haircut emergency territory. Eric’s hair sort of makes him look even more pathetic. It’s sad and floppy. But I like that he’s full of rage towards Jenny. Loved the moment when he texted Kira that they needed to strike and then he stabbed his pumpkin pie. You just know he was imagining decimating Jenny’s horrible weave.
So it looks as if Dan really does now have the hots for Vanessa. I’m not sure how I feel about this. Although he’s gotta have more chemistry with her than he had with Olivia. And Vanessa looked good this episode! Her hair looked great and her boho style was toned down. Still really do not like her mother, though. It’s hard to get on board with a character who’s basically just there to be annoying. I’d be okay with that lady not returning for a while.
One character who I do enjoy is the sublimely snobby CeCe. I’ve missed that sassy old broad. But the big secret with Lily (she stayed in California because she loved her newly sweet mother) was totally anticlimactic. Also, nice people have no place on Gossip Girl. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again!
So, I might have had a complete mental block but I don’t really remember hearing about Eleanor and Cyrus jetting off to Europe. Am I alone? I mean I know they’ve been missing but I just thought they were offscreen. In any case, Blair thinking her mother was pregnant was pretty hilarious, particularly her shout out to my least favorite Gossip Girl character OF ALL TIME. ““No offense to Cyrus but do you think the world really needs another Aaron Rose?” Um, amazing. It was like Blair was possessed by my bitchy spirit. That does make me sad to think we may not see Cyrus and Eleanor anymore; they were such an adorable couple and there was something awesome about Wallace Shawn being on Gossip Girl.
The big news though was that Eleanor wasn’t expecting but Dorota was. When in the hell have she and Vanya had time to procreate? Aren’t they always working? That was kind of adorable when she finally confessed the truth to him and he was so excited. Yay for Dorota and I’m excited to see what maid maternity wear looks like.
I love that Blair offers Serena a trip to France in order to cheer her up. My friends barely offer to buy me a beer when I’m down. And then Serena ended up going off with Conan O’Brien! Dear Serena, ditch the dork and hit up the City of Lights!
So what do we think Tripp’s wife is gonna do with that letter from Serena’s father? Hopefully this means we’ll be seeing Papa Van der Woodsen soon.
Poor Nate is just having a rough time with love. First, there was total dud Bree. And now Serena is totally dissing him. He may not have romance but he does have BROmance (see what I did there!). That was so cute when Chuck took him to get drunk at the end. I wonder if they went back home first to pick up their murses. I know I would!
Did anyone else notice the song playing during the dinner table scene? It was Jason Derulo’s “Whatcha Say” which covers Imogen Heap’s “Hide and Seek.” OC fans will remember that was the song playing in the season 2 finale when Marissa shot Ryan’s brother Trey (it was also memorably spoofed in an SNL Digital Short). Nice little homage to Josh Schwartz’s first teen drama.
Another really good Gossip Girl. I’m so happy to see this season get on track. Nice work GG folks!
What did you think of last night’s episode, PopWatchers? Do you buy Serena and Tripp? What should Dorota and Vanya name their baby?!

I don’t think Lily’s real reason for staying with CeCe was revealed…it seem like Lily lied about the “sweet mother” reason and Cece just covered for her…for now….
Yea, that was the whole point. At the end, she thanks CeCe for covering for her. Most likely she paid a visit to Serena’s daddy or this is connected to the Bart Bass storyline coming up..
Yeah!! That was just her cover..
Lily didn’t stay with Cici at all.. she went looking for Mr. VDW.
Recapper needs to pay attention. CeCe clearly asked Lily if Rufus knew about her little trip and Lily said that he did not and would not know. That so-called “secret” that Lily stayed with CeCe to get to know her was an obvious lie. How did you not get that?
for real, stack is as dumb as serena
Are you blatantly rude, because no one can see your face? He made a mistake that he should have been on top of, but try to be nice.
Bhahaha!
I liked last night’s episode. Chuck is the man and definitely had the line of the night regarding Serena and Tripp playing “grab ass” in his elevator!! Classic!! I do agree..why would Serena go with Tripp when she could be with Nate?! But then again, Serena never really has impressed me too much. Blair blows her out of the water. Can’t wait to see what Eric has up his sleeve.
While Chuck’s grab-ass line was great, my favorite was Eric’s line to Jenny “Your sweet potatoes are bland.” LOL
i have been a very harsh critic of eric..so I have to give him his due…this was his best ep..he is ok in small doses…very small…that SP line was great…just keep him minimal..
I agree – that was my loud laughing moment. It was so biting, and holiday appropriate!
this was my favorite line of the night. burn!!
eric…blah…rest of show rocks..
love that song but it really didn’t feel fitting for the scene….
I thought the song was pretty fitting, but Tim Stack–the song samples Imogen Heap, it’s not a cover! You work for an entertainment magazine!
I initially thought the same thing, like ‘what is up with all the autotune in the background?’ But I think the song was choosn for the line “the roof caving in and the truth coming out,” which was kind of hoovering in the air after Lily saw Serena’s ‘grab azz’ video.
During that scene I was was thinking how perfect that song was for it. It’s about cheating and lying…all of the stuff going on there.
Also, the Imogen Heap song that is sampled is “Whatcha Say” not “Hide and Seek”. This info is so easily found – get it together Tim Stack.
Actually jason derulo samples imogen heaps “hide and seek” in whatcha say which is basically the part that played in last nites ep
As Raj says, the Imogen Heap song is called Hide and Seek. Stack is right so lay off.
The anticlimactic Cici/Lily story was a setup for Lily to disclose that she was off on some secret rendezvous for two months. I’m sure that will lead to another anticlimactic storyline about Papa Van Der Woodsen, since that seems to be the only stories she gets I.e secret child. I’d prefer that they’d keep characters like the parents, Vanessa, Eric & etc in the background where they belong. They don’t really get interesting arcs that lead anywhere so what’s the point? Although I did LOL @him stabbing that pie. Him threatening Jenny was especially funny since she looks like she could take him out with her sharpened Kohl liner & he barely reaches her knees. I for one was not surprised that Serena chose Tripp over Nate, as Blair so hilariously reminded us, she has the worst taste in men. Speaking of, Nate was in rare form last night. He kept displaying what could only be described as… emotions? I’m so accustomed to his blank stares, so bravo Chace Crawford. . Who knew Footloose would make an actor out of you?
I gree about pretty much everything you just said but mostly about parents being in the background. I hate when they make episodes about the parents. I don’t care about their boring drama.
agree..rufus needs to go on tour…lilly needs to run off with Serena’s dad…V’s mom needs to forever disappear..and CC farewell…B’s mom is ok tho..
I thought the song was very fitting. I loved this episode. I recently bought season 2 during the Black Friday sales adn basically spent all of Thanksgiving break with my GF watching Gossip Girl. I am so happy that this season has seemed to right itself after the rocky start. I too could not believe that Serena would chose Tripp! I mean come on! I can’t believe Trip would be stupid enough to choose Serena. The writers of Gossip Girl did the impossible and actually made me feel bad for Nate!
Also, my thoughts on Dorota’s pregnancy included, “Who is going to help Blair execute her schemes?” and “I wonder how Blair is going to feel about sharing Dorota’s love?”
I can’t wait to see Blair go crazy planning Dorota’s wedding! You know, to stop another Polish-Russian war.
I’m seeing Emily Gilmore planning Suki’s wedding style grandeour.
That was the best Thanksgiving dinner in the history of TV; frickin’ hilarious. I couldn’t decide which dinner guest’s efforts were more funny. Trip’s ’seduction’ of S is so clumsy and OTT stupid. Guess that’s why he’s a congressman. She’s a 19 year old girl, you just sleep with her and then dump her; you don’t leave your sexy, clever, tough, redhead hottie of a wife for the opportunity.
I know right! Seriously Tripp is a complete knobend (who knew it was possible to create a character that was even more dull than Nate). And why the hell would you divorce your wife(your wife who helped you become a congressman and who is clearly way too goodlooking for you) for a 19 year old in a onesie? And while were at it. When the hell did Tripp become so stalker-esqu obsessed with Serena and while on earth did Blair tell her to go for it. She has (surprisingly) been a voice of reason throughout this stupid affair storyline and now she just cause ‘aww sweety… well if he says he loves you it must be so.’ Serena is a bint… and Tripp is unattractive and dull.
agreed especially about Blair- she never would have told Serena to go for Trip. That was so out of left field and felt completely phony
Last night episode was great! I love the dinner scene..but there are a few things that I don’t like..why are the characters like a revolving door..now Nate wants Serena and Serena was gaga over Carter, but now she’s crushin on Tripp..it’s like they don’t get over anyone very long..very unrealistic if you ask me..
I love Cece..she’s such a classy bitch..but Lily is becoming my fave..she’s so full of secrets..and I love it..the people that need to go away are Rufus and Vanessa..altho Vanessa has been seen alot lately, she still does nothing for me..and Eric is becoming a little bitch..I like..but Jenny will get her revenge..and Jenny’s legs goes on for days..I loved her and Blair’s outfits last night at the dinner..and the coat mishap was genius!
rufus and Vanessa should become steamy and run off and leave the show..Jenny’s legs are best on TV..Taylor should do a nair, hose, or something like that ad campaign..need to dump eric very poor character…..he should have floated away withte Dora the Exploer ballon at the Macy’s parade…lol
sorry on spelling that last sentence was a bit too amused at my own wit over the thought of Eric floating away forever on teh Dora the Explorer ballon…wherever he landed he would be the little bitch there too
I really enjoyed this episode, but I think the writers are attempting a Chuck/Blair relationship with Nate/Serena–drag on their will they/won’t they tension for a season or so. But, so many questions remain: How beautiful did Blair look in that Thanksgiving dress? Did anyone eat anything at Thanksgiving dinner other than pie? What does that Dr. Van der Woodsen letter say? Will Chuck ever get a story line this season?
I can answer at least one of your questions. Chuck gets a storyline all his own next week. Hint: the episode is titled The DeBarted.
This episode was even better than the last two. I love Chuck, I don’t know how they turned this horrible character in the only smart one in the whole series. Bravo Ed, you rock. I love also Eric, he should get more screen time, his revenge and he should be crowned king of the upper east side. I am so sad to see Cyrus and Eleonor leave, come on, why do they have always to go to France. Bring them back please, I love Cyrus, he is hilarious. This storyline certainly does look good. Finally,I always say it, please somebody can kill Vanessa or make her disappear for a couple of episodes, her storyline is always around coffee.
clara..like most of what you said…how about a rufus and vanessa hook-up? they run off never to return or at least stay gone a longgg time..only part where we divert is Eric…worst character on TV..easy…just kill him off..woul d make great TV..perhaps crushed by Santa at FAO while dressed as an ELF..or beat up by kids at Soup Kitchen…ho ho ho!
I LOVED Blair’s Thanksgiving outift!
I couldn’t love GG more than I do right now. There were funny moments, heartbreaking moments, touching moments, etc. The Thanksgiving dinner table scene was classic especially with Rufus’ corny Plymouth Rock joke. LOL CB were sweet as usual. I just want them to get a solid storyline which I’m hoping begins next week. I was so happy to see Chuck supporting Nate & telling him to go after Serena. He’s such a NS shipper. I understood Serena running from Nate after his confession of his feelings for her that never really away, but it didn’t make it any easier. I loved that he asked her to stay with him & give him a chance. Poor Nate looked so sad when she was deciding what to do. Oh, & DV are awesome too. Like Vanessa, I like Dan’s “new face” as well. I can’t wait to see more build-up for DV.
i completely agree with you.. the chuck/nate scenes were some of the best scenes this week. chuck telling nate to go after serena was so touching and it proves that he really is a good guy deep down. nate/serena need to get together!! as far as vanessa and dan..they need to be together to..their struggle between a friendship/romantic relationship was a big part of the books( that might be spoilerish for people who haven’t read the books;then again the show doesn’t really follow them) so i’m glad to see that it’s making its way into the show. also, consider me in the minority here but I actually like the character of Vanessa. she’s the character in the show that’s probably the most relatable to. think about it, how many of us can honestly relate to blair or serena. overall, i’m excited to see where the show goes from here but it stinks that we have to wait so long for new episodes after next weeks.
IKR? March 8th? That’s almost as long as the break between seasons. I really love how Chuck has grown over the years & how he’s almost become the voice of reason. I just love the friendship that Nate has with both Chuck & Dan. I was indifferent to Vanessa until this season. I always wanted her to get together with Dan, but I never really cared about the character. Now I actually like her. I think she & Dan are a natural fit for each other. Trifecta really is the perfect GG.
Of course Serena chose Trip! Hello, Aaron Rose, Gabriel, even Dan for Gods sake. She has a pattern, and its not an intelligent one.
LOL! I just bought the second season on DVD and while watching it I couldn’t palce where I had seen Aaron Rose before and I finally remembered! He played a schizophrenic in Dead Like Me. He was on for one episode but now whenever I see him all I see is the schizophrenic he played. Needless to say there wasn’t much of a difference between the two characters.
I think Lily was with Dr. Van der Woodson and that he told Serena that in the letter that the dumped Mrs. Tripp will use against them all later. Also, I totally hate Serena for choosing Tripp over Nate. I mean, come on! You take the guy’s virginity, and then when he professes his love for you, you take off with his married cousin?!?! What a whore! Most of the relationships are finally coming around to where they are in the books, and Nate and Serena should be no exception!
Serena’s used to falling for unavailable men. (Hello Daddy issues!). Putting her ridiculous pursuit of Tripp aside, I can’t hate the girl for being cautious with Nate. She’s been afraid to love him most her life, and crossing the friendship line without a bottle of booze has got to be more than a little scary.
