Robin Wright talks raising kids outside of Hollywood and divorcing Sean Penn

Filed under: Movies and tagged: , ,

Robin-Wright_lRobin Wright seems exhilarated about starting over, both personally and professionally. In recent months, the actress has overhauled just about every aspect of her life, from throwing herself into her work again (she stars in Disney’s A Christmas Carol and the upcoming The Private Lives of Pippa Lee) to divorcing Sean Penn after a tumultuous 20-year marriage. She also recently moved back to Southern California (with kids Dylan, 18, and Hopper, 16) after spending 12 years in the San Francisco area. “I didn’t want to raise my kids in this weird, sycophantic society,” Wright says, referring to Hollywood. “If you have celebrity parents, it’s not a good recipe for the kids, or anyone at any age. Look at what Brad and Angelina go through.”

Wright’s face darkens when asked about her divorce from Penn. “I don’t want to talk about it in great detail because it will all be reflected back to him, and I’m not interested in sharing that with people,” she says. “I have no regrets. I have two wonderful kids, and when I’m asked ‘Why did you leave?’ I guess, it was just ‘I’m going over here now.’” She takes a breather to gaze out at the Pacific and adds her last two words on the subject: “New book.”

Gilles Marini talks about his 'Brothers & Sisters' character, Luc: 'Well, why should I not be here?'

Filed under: Television and tagged: , ,

Giles-Marini-Brothers-Sisters_lAfter a few years of one-episode stints on shows like Passions, Criminal Minds, Ugly Betty and Dirty Sexy Money, French actor Gilles Marini truly broke out in last year’s Sex and the City movie as Dante, the Naked Guy. For the past few weeks, he’s been charming Brothers & Sisters fans — and providing a much-needed vitality boost for the downtrodden Walker family — as Luc Laurent, the sensitive-artist lover opposite Rachel Griffith’s Sarah. When I talked to my favorite Dancing With the Stars runner-up on the phone last week about his upcoming role on nip/tuck (he’s in two episodes beginning Nov. 18), we wound up talking about Brothers & Sisters a bit. The actor, who’s humbled and shocked by the number of fans who Facebook or email their urgent demands to see more of him on the show, is overjoyed that Luc’s story line has been extended four episodes beyond Marini’s original five-episode commitment…with the possibility of more. In tonight’s episode, “The Wig Party,” Marini appears only once — but don’t freak out! The actor’s own schedule was to blame, and he’ll be back for much more. “It gets to something much deeper and more dramatic the next week,” Gilles promises. “It’s major. Everyone will be on a cliffhanger of no way, what just happened, no no no! It’s pretty deep and I cannot wait for people to see it.”

EW: Do you think you’ll get to stay on the show for a long time?
Gilles:
Right now, four more episodes, that’s the minimum. I think they’ll leave it open and we’re gonna go day by day. For me, it’s so hard. I’m on Brothers and Sisters, you know? It can’t get better than that. Everyone there is acting royalty. It’s been an American Dream, the whole nine yards. The character Luc is great, rings a lot of bells to me. He’s very spontaneous and he’s in love with Sarah, inside and out. Sometimes it’s hard for her to believe it. In Europe, he’s a painter and he’s doing pretty well over there. He doesn’t need anything from anybody. He has no agenda. He just loves her! He’s like, ‘Well, why should I not be here?’”

You had a pool scene [in Oct. 25's "Last Tango in Pasadena"] that reminded everyone of your role on Sex and the City, and then you even did some ballroom dancing. Did you like going back to those previous roles?
You know what, the writers decided to put it out there, and what I liked about it was that they put it up in a really light way, as kind of an homage. It was fast and it was funny. It wasn’t like Sex and the City. Nothing will be like Sex and the City ever. The writers on Brothers & Sisters are very smart to put things that you already know are my strengths, then scratching the surface and finding the layers. Obviously, I was very happy to do the tango stuff — there were some moves in there I had never done on Dancing With the Stars.

Maybe if Luc and Sarah get married, you can do a special foxtrot-slash-rumba at the wedding.
I hope we do much more than that! If we get married, it would be awesome. What a great story line — Sarah finding love with someone so different from what she ever had before. Someone for real loves her. In life, it happens sometimes that you just meet good people.

'Project Runway Talk': Gordana dishes on Heidi, Irina, ridonk judging, and her heartbreak over missing out on Bryant Park

Gordana gave us some of the best sound bites of the season. “If you give me a sheep, I’ll make you a sweater.” “When you grow up eating with a spoon, you don’t think of making business out of that spoon.” “She would have completely, as they day, thrown me on [sic] the bus.” “I’ll kick your ass!”

Our Lady of Spoons amused me and sometimes confused me, but I always enjoyed seeing her pop up on my television each week. Alas, her time on Project Runway came to an end in the final challenge before Bryant Park. And as she explained during her visit to the EW offices for Project Runway Talk the morning after her swan song, she was heartbroken to get so close to New York Fashion Week and not even show a decoy collection. In all, Gordana proved to be a most awesome PRT guest. She dished on preposterous judging (of course Nina doesn’t get who Gordana is as a designer — she was absent half the season!), fearing the wrath of the judges (flashbacks to Heidi’s angry mug still haunt her), and how Irina might have shot herself in the foot by playing the meanie card. I hope you enjoy her as much as Dalton and I did. See you back here after the November 19 finale for interviews with Carol Hannah, Althea, and Irina.

'Ugly Betty' Bites: 18 Betty-ful clips from last night!

Another Friday night, another great batch of one-liners from the deliciously dialogued Ugly Betty! Here were my favorite quips from the evening:

“I really liked your pitch for a green issue. Wilhelmina was wrong—it did not reek of recycled manure.” —Matt, to Betty

“And I really liked your get sporty idea. You were not ‘nothing but nose hair’ while you were pitching it.” —Betty, to Matt

“Well, what an unpleasant surprise.” —Willy, upon encountering Daniel and Betty when coming out of the elevator

“Think of the tiny baby orphans! And your public image.” —Marc, convincing Willy that she has to do the charity party for Tibetan orphans

Readers' suggestions: 'SNL' sketches for Taylor Swift

Taylor-Swift_lYesterday, provoked by Taylor Swift and Kristen Wiig’s Penelope-esque promo, we asked for your sketch ideas for Swift. I’m with NatAttack, who wrote: “I feel it’s time for SNL to parody one of the greatest online parodies of our time: Stuff White People Like. Surely Taylor Swift belongs near the top of that list. (Love her/music but it’s true!) Some kind of pageant that pits the things white people love against each other would be grand in my book. Put Andy Sandburg in charge — I’m pretty sure he belongs on that list too.” Nic‘s idea could definitely work, too: “They should confront her and ask if she’s ever even seen Romeo and Juliet (since they obviously don’t end happily ever after). Then she can get all sorts of other plays/movies wrong. She could sing about Old Yeller living forever!” More of your good suggestions, below! It’s a good thing Kanye West won’t be there tonight, because none of you wanna see it… READ FULL STORY »

Susan Boyle will sing on 'DWTS,' has purchased furniture

susan_boyle_dwtsSinger Susan Boyle will appear on Dancing With the Stars this week to perform material from I Dreamed a Dream, out Nov. 24. But that’s not all! According to People.com, the reluctant money-spender bought a three-piece sofa and recliner for her home in Blackburn, Scotland, plus a new refrigerator. She went with burgundy leather for the furniture. I’m a little annoyed she didn’t consult with EW first, because I would have suggested a custom-made set upholstered in Dancing With the Stars‘ signature “vomiting purple disco balls” kaleidoscope pattern (pictured), which happens to be a close approximation of the Britain’s Got Talent backdrop but with more sparkle. Should she have gone snazzier?

Musical guests are often pre-taped, so it remains to be seen whether Boyle will be face-to-face with season 9 contestant Kelly Osbourne or her mother, a frequent front-row audience member. Last week, Sharon Osbourne insulted Boyle’s physical appearance on the Opie & Anthony radio show. Will Boyle’s appearance get you to watch a Dancing With the Stars results show?

This Week on Stage: 'The Understudy,' 'Idiot Savant,' and 'Nightingale'

the-understudy_lThis week saw the too-rapid close of the Neil Simon revival Brighton Beach Memoirs on Broadway, as well as the opening of three Off Broadway productions: The Understudy, starring Justin Kirk, Julie White, and Mark-Paul Gosselaar (above); Idiot Savant with Willem Dafoe; and Nightingale with Lynn Redgrave. Melissa Bernardo gave a B+ to The Understudy but dinged it for the cast’s somewhat mixed on-stage chemistry. Thom Geier calls Idiot Savant “one strange, head-scratching evening” and gives it a C+. As for Lynn Redgrave’s one-woman show, Nightingale, I gave it a C and took issue with the production because “the plot and story are so meandering that it quickly becomes rather confusing.”

Still hunting for something to see on stage this weekend? Check out the EW.com Stage hub for up-to-date news and reviews; or consult this handy guide below, which includes links to all of our stage reviews of current shows. (Note: The reviews are typically of the show’s original casts.)
