Clip du jour: Lin-Manuel Miranda's Alexander Hamilton rap

Hey, attention everyone: Lin-Manuel Miranda is the awesomest. This is the best history rap maybe ever:

I also loved his jam from the season premiere of House — not the one from the talent show, but the one that played over the closing credits: READ FULL STORY »

Robert Pattinson morning TV roundup: Educating Regis, addressing rumors and regret on 'Today'

As we saw yesterday when Kristen Stewart stopped by Live with Regis and Kelly, nothing is more entertaining than watching an unapologetically clueless Regis Philbin discuss The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Reege did not disappoint when Robert Pattinson visited this morning. Some highlights:

• After Pattinson, who admitted he was running on fumes and screams of fans, said he’d been all over the world in the last two weeks (“Tokyo, Munich, Frankfurt…”), Philbin asked, “And do the young people there know you?” As the audience giggled at their crazy grandpa, Kelly stepped in to tell Regis, “It’s huge. You don’t understand.” “I just read about it today,” Philbin cracked. (Had he said yesterday, we might’ve believed him.) READ FULL STORY »

'FlashForward': Why you should watch tonight's episode -- and scoop on what lies ahead

Filed under: Lost and tagged: ,

My favorite new show of the year is ABC’s FlashForward, an immersive sci-fi mystery filled with poignancy and wit. It launched with a great deal of “The Next Lost!” hype, and I can say the show has at least one thing in common with its network sibling: the ability to encourage passionate even obsessive interest. At least for me. I am driven to rummage through its text for clues, but even better, I am deeply moved by its characters. The premise: On Oct. 6, everyone in the world blacked out for 2 minutes and 17 seconds, causing global catastrophe, and during their inexplicable power nap, everyone got a quick glimpse of the same future date, April 29, 2010.

The best episodes of the series so far have been the ones that take the time to imagine, in detail, how this mysterious calamity would have truly affected the real world and its people. Tonight is one of those episodes. I got the chance to see it early, and it’s a top-notch outing. It focuses on Dr. Bryce Varley (Zachary Knighton, pictured), who in the pilot was seen trying to shoot himself at the moment the blackout occurred. Since then, he has found reason to live, thanks to what he saw in his flash-forward. To date, all we know about his vision is that it involves a young Japanese woman and a Japanese character for the word “Believe.” Tonight’s episode, which is entitled “Believe,” will reveal the “heavy stuff” that drove Bryce to his suicide attempt and what he really saw in his vision. You will also meet the young Japanese woman — and if she has the same effect on you as she did on me, she’ll instantly become one of your favorite characters on the show. I’ve been one of those FF fans who’ve griped that the show has been slow in getting to this story. Having seen it, I can say it was worth the wait. Come back later and let me know if you feel the same — or don’t.

'Modern Family' recap: When movie stars attack!

Filed under: Modern Family and tagged: ,

To a TV executive, I’d imagine the phrase “special guest stars Elizabeth Banks and Edward Norton” would conjure up images of creative brilliance and ratings gold. But in actual practice, the stunt casting of the former as a boozy child hater and especially the latter as dreary Spandau Ballet bassist Izzy LaFontaine, threatened to derail last night’s episode of ABC’s normally consistent freshman hit.

To be honest, Norton can’t take all the blame for not scoring a single decent laugh during the Spandau bit. Sure, his British accent was too strained, his “I love the ’80s” hair too obvious, but the idea behind the shtick –  that Julie Bowen’s Claire couldn’t come up with a better anniversary present for hubby Phil than free-hug coupons — didn’t seem remotely credible. Can Joseph Gordon-Levitt host 'SNL' as well as he swings a drink?

Filed under: Television and tagged: ,

I don’t know, you guys — I have a sneaking suspicion this guy might be a funnier Saturday Night Live host than last week’s January Jones. I know! It’s a crazy thing to say! It’s just an instinct. ILI (I love instincts).

A Flying Babies movie trailer: What will the French think of next?

You heard me: Flying babies. Or “les enfants volants” as they’d say in the country that produced Ricky, a new French-language inspirational drama(?!) that appears to be about a kid born with wings. As far as I can tell, this movie has three things going for it.

1.)It was directed by François Ozon, who made the awesome Swimming Pool.

2.) It has a vaguely disturbing poster that just shows a closeup of the kid giving a sideways glance. (Is he wearing mascara?)

3.) Its trailer — in which Ricky’s parents discover his ability, try to hide him from the government, and then tie a string around him and fly him thereby creating the world’s first LIVE BABY KITE — will actually melt your brain a little. Not a ton, just like 5 seconds on defrost in the microwave. Behold:

(In related baby zen news, “Charlie Bit My Finger” has recently been auto-tuned, with Grammy-worthy results.)

'America's Next Top Model' recap: And the winner is...

It’s the dawn of a new era, Model fans, not just an era of petite-ness, though for the record, previous winner Eva is only 5’6 and change, but an era of — dare I write it? — lucidity, credibility or seeming relevance? It was Bloody Eyeball versus the Bull Castrator, and to the episode’s credit, it had me believing there was almost a credible contest. But we all knew what would happen tonight, and the best part was that it actually did. READ FULL STORY »

Who will win 'Project Runway'? Mean-a Irina? Sweet Carol Hannah? Or Somewhere-in-Between Althea?

Well, here it is at last. The Project Runway season six finale airs tonight and I for one haven’t been this excited since … I last got my teeth cleaned. D’oh! I’m only joking. How can I not after this bizarre season that cruelly deprived us of the Holy Judging Trinity for weeks on end and forced us, time and again, to watch slack-jawed as ever-hideous designs limped down the catwalk? Grrr! But enough with that grumbling. Let’s now get down to speculating how this hootenanny might conclude. Who will win? And to quote Lady Ridonkulous herself (i.e. Tyra Banks), WHO! will be eliminated tonight?

The obvious answer to that first question is, obviously, Irina. Obviously. She’s won more challenges than both Carol Hannah and Althea, and from what we saw last week, her collection seems to be the strongest. Now, some Runway fans have argued that Irina’s villain persona poses too big a public relations obstacle for the show to crown her the winner. But I don’t buy it. For one thing, the Mean-a Irina character may be polarizing and annoying, but it keeps people talking. (Leanne who?) Post-win, she could chomp through her publicity tour on a diet of more controversial statements or she could try to convince us that she’s really just a muffin inside. Either way, she’s a godsend to the press. And let’s not forget that Runway does reward villains. Jeffrey Sebelia won season three and he made someone’s mother cry!

Of course, we also can’t overlook Nina’s warning last week against an all-black collection. Ooooh…! Ominous foreshadowing of Irina’s demise? My guess is it was just a red herring. Christian Siriano won season four with a collection that was heavy on the black, light on the color. But then again…he was Christian Siriano. And however talented Ms. Shabayeva is, she ain’t no Mr. Fierce. In which case…my money’s on Carol Hannah. Sorry, Althea.

Great. I’ve managed to confuse myself with all that back-and-forthing, so I’ll turn it over to you. What do you think? Will Irina crush her competition tonight or will Carol Hannah kick her stomach flu’s ass and walk away with the glistening, gold-plated, imaginary Runway trophy?

Before you do that…check out our groovy interview with Gordana!

This Week's Cover: 'Sherlock Holmes' Exclusive: Is Downey quitting acting?

“I have no set plans for my future,” says Robert Downey Jr., who plays the titular detective in the upcoming film Sherlock Holmes (due Dec. 25), directed by Guy Ritchie (Snatch). “I’ve never had it this good — this is my day in the sun — and I certainly don’t want to look a gift horse in the molars. But [my wife] Susan and I want to begin to be in our lives as much as we are in our jobs. I’d love just to sit here and say, ‘What movie’s playing tonight?’ I’d love to finish the new book about D-day I’m reading. I love painting, I love music.”

The actor, who got his comeback in Iron Man in 2008 and will reprise the role in next summer’s Iron Man 2, isn’t even sure he wants to keep acting. “I’m f—ing really good at what I do — and have been for a long time, so I don’t waver on that,” he says. “But here’s the thing: I can only be a guy on a call sheet probably, I don’t know, maybe a couple more times. It’s something I’m so grateful to have in my palm, and yet I already see its inevitable decay.” Or not. Then again, he says with a weary smile, “If Sherlock Holmes performs well, I could be busy for the next 5 or 7 or 10 years.”

Olivia Wilde gets her indie 'Fix'

Filed under: Movies and tagged: , ,

How did Tao Ruspoli land Olivia Wilde, best known as Thirteen on House, for his debut feature film? Easy, they’re married. Ruspoli is an award-winning documentary filmmaker who stays close to reality with his first fictional project – the story is inspired by his brother’s struggle with drug addiction. Wilde and Ruspoli play a documentary filmmaking couple who must race across Los Angeles to get his brother Leo into a rehab program by 8 pm, or else the brother faces three years of jail. Shawn Andrews (Dazed and Confused) plays Leo, and Megalyn Echikunwoke (CSI: Miami, 24) also co-stars.

Ruspoli said he’s always wanted to work with his wife: “We always joked that while we had gotten married after only knowing each other for 6 months, the real commitment (and risk) it takes to make a film together required 4 years.”

Fix opens tomorrow in New York, and EW has an exclusive clip after the jump. READ FULL STORY »
