'The Last Station' and other movie trailers that screamed Oscar nod

Categories: Movie Trailers, Movies

EW movie critic Lisa Schwarzbaum dubs Helen Mirren an Oscar contender for her role as Leo Tolstoy’s frustrated wife Sofya, struggling against her husband’s renouncement of wealth and sex, in the adaption of the novel The Last Station. The desperation and determination she conveys in the trailer alone has me concurring. Some performances are like that: In two minutes, you know.

How great is the trailer for The Last Station? (It’s nice to see a preview go all out and feel this complete because all the actors are on the same level — Christopher Plummer, Paul Giamatti, and James McAvoy costar.) Which trailers in the past have screamed Best Actor or Actress Oscar nom?

I always thought the trailer for “The Limey” boasted academy award nomination POTENTIAL for Terrence Stamp AND Peter Fonda! … good movie…but i was wrong!

That is an interesting question because SOOO many great trailers have preceeded great duds. ha ha! However, in terms of trailers that have actually lived up to their counterparts, I remember seeing the trailer for “American Beauty” and being awestruck by Annette Bening’s presence. The trailer for “Mystic River,” similarily, left me certain of a triumph for Penn. Sometimes you just know.

  • Marshall

Recently, “Crazy Heart” only because it BEGGED for it.

“elizabeth: the golden age” and the “i too can command the wind sir!” speech from Cate the Great. She literally screamed for an Oscar.

Yeah this movie looks very interesting. Just based on those few moments in the trailer, I’m amazed that she can convey that much spunk and character with what seems like a very outward performance and also do what she did in the Queen, where almost everything was under the surface. I love her.

Kate Winslet for Revolutionary Road. But the Oscar snubbed her and the movie – a crime of the highest order. She eventually did win for the wrong movie – The Reader.

“A Single Man” and “Up In the Air” for Colin Firth and George Clooney.

The moment I saw the trailer for “Closer” I knew Natalie Portman would get a nomination. She had such an impressive presence in those few seconds.

Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight.

Most recently, the trailer for “Doubt” screamed Oscar nom for Meryl Streep. Well, that and the fact that she’s Meryl Streep.

It also seemed like the trailer for “Changeling” was screaming “nominate Jolie” – but it worked, so there.

Wonderful trailer. I had the wrong idea about this movie. It looks very entertaining.
And James McAvoy is co-starring with his real-life wife – again! I can’t help but feel a little excited about a Shameless ‘reunion’, of sorts.
    Can’t wait to see this!
