I’m pretty convinced that what we watch as kids highly influences our TV choices later on. I’m not a scientist, but case in point: I grew up watching Monster Squad, which went on sale this week on Blu-ray. Now, as an adult, I can’t get enough of all things monster and horror.
Monster Squad – at least when you’re 6 years old – is the kid-friendly welcome mat to the horror genre. The flick, which follows a pre-teen monster club that battles classic movie monsters, taught me that wolfmen have nards, scary German guys are monster encyclopedias and you should always try to keep company with at least one virgin. It even had cool vampires pre-Twilight.
Okay, your turn. What are you loving this week in TV/books/tech/games? Anything? Don’t be shy, and remember to leave your e-mail address in case we put your pick in the mag. Sharing time ends Thursday at noon ET.

I do not think I could love “Speechless” by Lady GaGa anymore. Power ballad + randomest lyrics (ripped my heart seams/popped my bubble dreams?) = The Fame Monster is totally worth buying.
The Monster Squad still holds a very special place in my heart. I was so pumped when this was released on DVD a few years ago, now Blu-Ray is even better. My favorite childhood movie ever….WOLFMAN HAS NARDS?!
Can’t forget about Rudy either…great characters all around.
Sons of Anarchy. Hands down, my favorite show on TV. Kurt Sutter has perfectly set us up for the season finale next week…the end is nigh for Zoebelle…the end is nigh and Jax is just the man to deliver it especially as the previews make it look like they are going after his “old lady” Tara. I don’t think this outlaw will have mercy…
Definitely The Fame Monster. GaGa’s follow-up to The Fame is fierce, and completely fantastic. Also, I was a big fan of her AMA performance
Loved this movie!!I had the biggest crush on Ryan Lambert from Kids, Inc
Like Van Helsing (2004), Monster Squad is an earlier example of squandered opportunity. Creating a good story with the classic Universal monsters should be a no-brainer. It would be like gaining the rights to use Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, Freddy Kruger, and Pinhead. Instead, the “monsters” in Monster Squad are watered down, neutered threats with Frankenstien presented as a comedic character. Granted this is a kids’ movie, but there should be some respect for these old characters and some attempts to maintian their integrity. There is nothing scary about them and surprisingly they receive little screen time. When the Gillman briefly pops out of a sewer he is immidately shot and killed. The Wolf Man and Mummy have exactly one good scene near the end of the film. I mean, if I had access to these classic monsters I’ve have them in every scene even if they’re just standing around the water cooler. Awful.
James Franco on General Hospital is on my Must List this week. He brings alot of energy and is clearly having a ball. Plus his character’s name is Franco-how cool is that?
Oh, I adore Monster Squad. “Wolfman’s got nards!”
Having a good time watching “Phineas and Ferb” on Disney Channel with my son. The songs and winking jokes make the show just as entertaining for adults as they do for younger children. We’re already looking forward to the upcoming Christmas special.
I can’t wait to see Rebecca Miller’s “The Private Lives of Pippa Lee”. But who can’t wait to see a movie by a novelist and auteur, who studied art at Yale and can call Daniel Day-Lewis and Arthur Miller among the most important men in her life and whose movies approach women’s life from a challenging and honest perspective.
– “Muppets Bohemian Rhapsody” on YouTube – It’s the Muppets covering Queen… need I say more?
– “Funny People” on DVD and Blu-ray – The third film from director, and this decade’s king of comedy, Judd Apatow hit stores this week. As is the case with any Apatow release, the extensive special features — including a behind-the-scenes doc on Aziz Ansari’s “Raaaaaaaandy!” character — are worth the price of purchase alone.
