'Dancing With the Stars': Thoughts on the performance finale?

Tonight, Mya, Kelly Osbourne, and Donny Osmond danced a final standard or Latin, barely kept up during a daunting “Megamix Challenge,” and attempted to wow us with the dreaded/revered freestyle round. Check back here in the morning to read my recap of the performance finale — UPDATE: My full recap is now liiiiive! — and in the meantime, read through our photo gallery of The Final 3′s Best/Worst Dances over the season. I picked two “lights” and two “shades” for each Star, most of which were highlighted by the contestants themselves during their retrospectives. Do you think any of the dances tonight overruled their previous personal Bests? I’m thinking Donny and Kym’s freestyle did, for sure. “Oh!” grunted Mr. Vegas to close out the show. He cannot help himself. EVERY SINGLE TIME! (Except when he’s sad.)

Did Dmitry lowball Mya with that Hairspray routine? Did anyone else get a Jock Jams vibe from the “Megamix Challenge”? Talk amongst yourselves while I apply another coat of spray tan to my laptop and dry my tears re: not getting to see the DANCMSTR vanity plate. Come on.

Kelly was SO underscored! I thought her Tango was sexy and well-danced. I couldn’t believe she got the lowest score that round. Her disco routine was a lot of fun!

Mya’s was underwhelming – not sure what Dmitry was thinking. Clearly they should have gone for something with more Latin flavor to help her display her “booty” moves.

Donny’s dance wasn’t even ballroom. Yes, it was a crowd pleaser, but it clearly wasn’t a Dancing with the Stars ballroom dance. Couldn’t believe the judges gave him straight 10s. I think he’s an unstoppable machine.

If we’re doing hidden gems, I found it hilarious that in Donny’s first dance, Kim’s outfit looked like the mirror ball when she twirled and it puffed out. Very coy!

Freestyle doesn’t have to be strictly ballroom. It’s a chance for the pro and celebrity to let loose and showcase themselves.

    • Elizabeth

Yeah, even though they messed up a little, Kelly & Louis got hosed on their judges scores. It was fun, it was upbeat, it was challenging.
Dmitry/Mya and Donny/Kym were two snorefests -something I’d expect during week 4 or 5, not the finale.

I always hold Drew/Cheryl & Helio/Julianne’s up as the benchmarks for the freestyles. Needless to say, the frontrunners didn’t even come close.

Kelly had fun – the point of the freestyle IMO.

Dimitry blew it for Mya, just like Cheryl dropped the ball with Gilles. Mya came off looking like a diva, -and, unfortunately, it looks like she was right to question Dimitry’s choices. I think Donny will win this, though Mya is clearly a better dancer.

    • Rebecca

I agree with you that Mya is the better dance but I’m really hoping Donny will win this because he worked hard and he actually has a personality. Whenever I hear Mya speak, everything sounds forced and cliched. Donny can be annoyingly peppy but that’s just who he is and he doesn’t have to try to be likable. As for Kelly, I absolutely adore her but she knows fully well that she has no shot of winning and only got this far because of her fans. She tried insanely hard of course and excelled in the waltz but she was just ok in everything else. Her personality drove her far.

      • Michael

Rebecca, I never thought that dancing is about speaking, I thought it’s about …dancing

    • Nancy

I agree with you about both Dmitry and Cheryl shortchanging their partners in the free style. I’ve always felt Cheryl cost Gilles the win. As for Donny, I believe that the free style should at least resemble ballroom dancing.

  • KP

Dmitry definitely dropped the ball as a choreographer and as Mya’s partner.

  • bill

I’d have to say I liked Mya’s freestyle the least of all three. Dmitry should have let Mya go with her idea of something ORIGINAL!

  • Jen

I didn’t think Donny’s dance was worthy of 30, but Mya certainly left the door open for him. She should’ve stood her ground with Dmitry, but hindsight is 20/20

  • clandrith

If people actually vote for the best dancer (over the course of the season and even tonight) then Mya should win in spite of a lackluster freestyle offering from Dmitry. Donny’s freestyle did not deserve a 30. There was more mugging than dancing. But I realize that when it comes to this show, the best dancer has often come in 2nd or lower. Mel B, Gilles, Mario, Mario Lopez for example.

    • Zach

The one-named Mario was not the best dancer

  • Jo C

Sad that Dmitry mimicked Mel/Maks’ paso so thoroughly. Don’t shame him further re freestyle, he’s so new to DWTS! He’ll get the blame tho, I’ll bet. Kym and Donny simply grabbed the limelight. Good for them.

  • EdytaFan1

Donny got three 10s? Are you kidding me?!!! If he deserved that so did Mya, she made no mistakes in her freestyle either. Donny missed so many holds and almost dropped Kym 3 times in the beginning of his cha-cha he should have gotten 8s. How hard is it to look good with when eyes are on Kym?

  • Italian mom.

We all know that Mya will win, but she shouldn’t. The judges gave her 10′s and she should not have gotten it. The judges have the last vote and they will vote Mya. This year isn’t fair. Maybe I will not watch tomorrow night because we all know. Kelly did so well she should have gotten 10′s too. Very upset………..with this years DWTS…………

    • Anne

WOw I thought I was the only one that felt like that…sheesh…it is obvious…the should just move the show to Utah and be done with it.

    • 4dancing

Look everyone has a right to their opinion whether they like it or not…to OP and Lola

    • dj

Which competition are you watching? Kelly and Louie made all kinds of mistakes during their freestyle. At one point, Kelly said that during the pass-under, that she looked like something Louie had “pooped out”. So classy. I’m tired of people saying Mya doesn’t have a personality. Just because she isn’t an over-the-top perky Osmond or a crying, whining Osborne, doesn’t mean she doesn’t have a personality. Apparently women still aren’t supposed to be strong and know what they want. Welcome back to the dark ages.

I think that Dimitri was a rookie to the freestyle round showed tonight. I think it got in his head. And he went too safe. I don’t like Maya; I think she is too much of a ringer but I would have though he would have done some kind of sexy routine that would have gotten people talking… But he went to safe. With Donny; he is the consummate showman. That was the perfect routine for him. It gave him a chance to have a fun. Louie knew he had no chance against Donny and Maya; so he designed a fun routine for Kelly. Too bad Kelly wasn’t able to complete it all in one piece. But it was fun. And it fit her… Dimitri I think got nervous… And he probably has blown it since Donny is only two points back and fans have shown they will vote for him if given the chance. And his was a crowd pleaser routine.

  • Scout

I am voting for Kelly. She has come the farthest. Mya – obviously the most talented. But the judges gave her scores far above what she deserved tonight. They all said her freestyle was lackluster and boring, and then gave her a higher score than Kelly. Bull. Donny had the best freestyle – but I’m just a bigger fan of Kelly’s progression.
Very sad that Derek & Joanna weren’t in it – they would have put on a great freestyle. This season was pretty lack-luster.

    • Andrea

I mostly agree with you, but of course they scored Mya higher than Kelly- while Mya’s routine was lackluster, Kelly made some very big faux pas. The only way they could have scored anyone lower than Kelly would be if they had big, glaring errors as well.

  • Catmonster

Kelly’s freestyle deserved 9′s. Yes, she fell, so deduct a point for that. Her freestyle was the most entertaining, the most exciting and the most challenging to her skills. Dmitry’s stuff was the same boring stuff he’s done for 90% of the season so far. And no way, no way, no way should her name be mentioned in the same breath as Mel and Maks’ paso.

    • Scout

Totally agree – they completely ripped of Maks’ paso w/Mel B. Even he commented on it in his Twitter. Such crap

  • bergie

Too bad Kelly made mistakes in the freestyle, because it would have been the best one. I was rooting for her – she seemed to be peaking at the right time. Mya’s routine was boring and since she can’t win on personality, they blew their shot at the Mirrorball. Donny was very good, but c’mon…he did Broadway? Not much of a stretch when he STARRED in the musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. He will win, and it will be ok. But I found the whole season pretty blah.

    • Lola

IMO him being in “Joseph” is a non-issue. It’s a Broadway show but a far cry doing Latin/ballroom dance routines. Assuming you’re familiar with it – it’s just basic choreography even I could do. Mya was in two dance movies – “Chicago” and “Shall We Dance” — the latter where she had to learn a ballroom routine. I’m happy for Kelly but Donny got my votes. Will be happy if he or Kelly wins as I didn’t like Mya’s (or should I say M’ya’s) attitude tonight. Diva much?

      • KP

I didn’t see the diva attitude at all.

  • IMissKristi

Donny played to his strengths; Mya didn’t. However, I think the fans will vote for whomever they’ve always liked. — Don’t you just love the obvious friendship between Donny and Tom?

  • Big C

Kelly definately deserved at least 9′s if not 10′s for her freestyle, that was a real show stopper and there was alot going on, Mya should have gotten the 8′s. Donnie rocked as expected and they did a real good job. I am still rooting for Kelly though!!!

    • Bellatrix

Honestly, 10s? She fell down! 8s were fitting grades, and actually sort of kind. A week or two ago and it probably would’ve been 7s. It is a shame though, as Kelly’s was the most entertaining routine.
