'Old Dogs' advertising makes me shrug in a clichéd way

Yes, this poster is in a different language. But that’s not the only reason it’s so confusing. If you, like me, live in New York City, and have walked at least a block, chances are you’ve seen this poster for Old Dogs — in English, of course — which opens Nov. 25. (For whatever reason, the American poster hasn’t made its way onto the Web yet.)

But what does it all mean?! The film is about two friends (John Travolta and Robin Williams) who suddenly find themselves taking care of a set of young twins. Yet, if I were to try to determine the plot from this poster, I would be completely lost, as the photo seems to have no connection whatsoever to the log line (where are the twins?), or the words “Old” and “Dogs.” And really? We’re still laughing at a hugging, affectionate gorilla? And what is Seth Green’s role in any of this? He’s not an “old” dog, right? And why is Travolta shrugging in that clichéd way? (Seriously, that shrug is just as tired as a group of CBS sitcom cast members dancing in an ad.)

I have seen the trailer and TV spots where Travolta and Williams get trapped in a penguin exhibit at the zoo and Green gets cradled by a gorilla, so I guess this poster attempts to drum up an appetite for the movie’s guys-tussle-with-animals humor. Still, if they want to start hanging new posters around my ‘hood, they should probably stick with the gorilla-less original, ‘cuz this lame poster and its hackneyed attempts to tickle my funny bone make me bananas, and not in the good way.

Has this poster or any of the trailers made you want to see this film? What’s the worst movie poster you’ve ever seen? And do you plan on seeing Old Dogs next weekend?

The trailer is the lamest thing going? Why do people still find humor in crotch gags and pratfalls?

This suprised me too. A Disney movie that has a scene when someone gets hit in the crotch with a golf ball is a bad sign. I think this movie was to come out in the summer. I think besides the timing of the release was too soon after the death of John Travolta son and maybe the movie wasn’t finished, there was other problems affiliated with it.

    It looks terrible. Sorry, cliches.

  • craig

poor Travolta, one tragedy after another, first he loses his son, now he loses his dignity by being in this cinematic tragedy..here is hoping he has a better 2010.. maybe Tarentino will put him in another film!

Wow, even though this movie looks cheesy as hell, the other poster you linked to in the article is so much better! I wonder why they aren’t using that one?

Ever since the trailer started playing (what seems like ages ago), I’ve not understood why Seth Green ends up singing Air Supply while being cradled by the gorilla. The whole thing just looks dumb.

  • uhh..

You couldn’t pay me to see this movie.

What’s even stranger is that the Russian title in this photo isn’t “Old Dogs.” It is “So-So Holiday” (literally), or put in better English, “Mediocre Holiday.”

I don’t understand why this movie was even conceived? Hasn’t stupid comedy died with Land of the Lost?

    • cerie

      If only, J. If only.

  • Terry

Why was it conceived? I’d say the box office for wild hogs or whaever it was called.

“And why is Travolta shrugging in that clichéd way?” Travolta is shrugging because even he doesn’t know what the movie is about.

I saw it and I think it has been sitting on a shelf for a while, Bernie Mac is in a few scenes. They repeat the same sight gags a couple of times.

I feel bad for Seth Green- talented and funny guy. Why’s he wearing so much make-up? I’m not surprised to hear it may have been sitting on a shelf. It should have stayed there.

The only reason this movie exists: stupidity. Most people are stupid and can’t sit through intelligent comedies or dramas. Instead, we have Transformers and Wild Hogs because they require no standard of intelligence. Recently, I watched State of Play and wondered why it wasn’t a hit; then my husband pointed out that I asked questions about the movie, since the plot was dense and intricate, and if dense people saw the movie, then it would be a lose, lose. I predict that this movie will be a hit with the soccer moms.

all the ads are built around this zoo scene… im sure they have played the actual zoo scene in the commercials so why bother seeing the movie at all if thats the best part???
