With star Robert Downey Jr. in fighting form and enjoying an easy rapport with his costar, Jude Law, the filming of Sherlock Holmes in London last year was trouble-free. The only drama seemed to take place off the set, where the film’s director, Guy Ritchie (Snatch, RocknRolla), and his then-wife Madonna filed for divorce. The couple had been married since 2000, and the announcement made global headlines. But according to Holmes star Robert Downey Jr., the cast saw no evidence of strain on Ritchie, and the divorce had no impact on the production. “Guy is a country gentleman,” Downey says. “He doesn’t want to occupy his mind with things that may be unpleasant or may get him riled up. He was just doing what he would have been doing regardless of the situation.” When asked how he coped with all that tabloid noise, not to mention private emotion, while shooting a major studio film, Ritchie answers with just four simple words: “Head down, arms swinging.”

You guys are seriously turning into Us Weekly and People. I’m sure whatever happened on the “trouble-free” Sherlock Holmes set is still far more interesting than dragging out the Madonna divorce. The guy is being interviewed about a movie he directed, and the cast should be fielding questions about the movie, not the director’s divorce.
Where’s the OUTRAGE!?!
Guy Ritchie has DESTROYED Modonna! David Banda is leaving ENGLAND! Toynbee tiles are EVERYWHERE!
Once again, Entertainment Weakly takes the People magazine route. If I wanted to know about celebrity divorces, who’s dating who, who’s pregnant, I would read that magazine. I certainly have no regrets about canceling this one.
I only care about Robert Downey, Jr. And I agree with Crispy since when does EW report on tabloid hoopla. This magazine is steadily going downhill.
It (the divorce) probably didn’t bother G. Ritchie because he was done with her years ago.
Of course the divorce didn’t bother him. I’d be happy too if my future ex-wife was worth $700 million dollars and I was going to $76 mill! Oh yeah, and Steve, it was the other way around. Madonna got sick of him. He was a rude and verbally abusive husband who would constantly degrade Madonna to the point she was in tears. SO glad Madonna sucked the life force out of him. He was only ever good before Madonna. Just like Madonna was only ever good when she was single.
Please Ariana, if Guy made Madonna cry because of rudeness or verbal abuse, it’s just karma coming back to her for the way she treats people in her daily life. It’s about time she got a taste of her own medicine.
Oh yeah, abusing your wife, sometimes in front of your children is the best thing in the world and she and the kids totally had it coming. Give me a break, your misogyny is showing. Abuse is never justified.
I agree – Madonna kicked his ass to the curb.
I think they will both be better for it (career-wise)
Of course Guy Ritchie was not upset he walked away with over 100 million bucks –he played Madonna , I hope this movie flops
Of course they used Madonna and divorce in the article: It was the only way it would catch the reader attention because Richie’s film career is over…long over. It was karma for being such a moron to Madonna publicly. From what he displayed in the public eye he was a jerk to her. Good bye Mr. Richie.
When I first show the cover, I immediately thought of A Clockwork Orange – so much like Malcolm McDowell wearing the hat, with his head tilted down — just needs the fake eyelash!
JERMEY BRETT should have been in your timeline….
Way to go, EW. You’ve turned yourself into just another tabloid. I mean, never mind you actually ask question about the film and the actors, rather than gossip. I guess that’s expecting too much.
No mention of Jeremy Brett? Really? Not even on a timeline that includes “Without a Clue”? I’m not surprised when Robert Downey repeatedly fails to mention Brett as a Holmes influence or inspiration – Brett had a virtuosity that Downey can only dream of. Why shine a light on one’s own mediocrity? But I am surprised that EW editors dropped the ball this badly. It’s like doing an article about ’60 rock and failing to mention The Beatles. Pathetic.
